I go 4 weeks of PTO, so that is vacation sick leave all wrapped up into one. 0-3 years you get 3 weeks; 4-6 years you get 4 weeks; 7 years and up you get 5 weeks.
I would love a job that separated vacation and sick time because I hate using what I feel is vacation time to lay on the couch and be ill.

Some jobs will let you work 9 hours days & you get every other friday off. Similar idea, just not a large vacation all at once. My mom gets to work seven 10 hr days & then gets seven days off, but she is special . Fanatastic schedule for vacations - schedule 1 week off (70 hours for her) & you have 3 weeks straight off. This is the case for DH, but he doesn't always get it entirely off.

DH's company gives no more than 4 weeks vacation no matter how long you've worked for them. He doesn't earn PTO for sick time or personal business separate from vacation; if you need it, you take it. DH normally schedules all personal business on his "off Fridays" and when he's sick he usually telecommutes, so he rarely posts any PTO.

Are we talking some sort of union type job where you clock in and out so you ONLY ever work 8 hours per day? I'm salaried and paid for a 35 hour work week... but I can't remember the last time I worked 35 hours in a week (that didn't contain a Paid Holiday or a day off from Combined leave). Could I just work a 45 hour week - ie I get to leave work even if my work isn't done/there's some problem/the World is gonna End if X doesn't get done.... because i've put in my 9 hours and keep the benefits and combined leave I already get? That would be a nice improvement...

I would, but it would be a waste - I get 2.5 weeks of vacation now and never end up using it all. I'd honestly rather do the flex schedule - 5-day then 4-day week - because it would be structured. I'm very bad about forcing myself to take time off unless I'm REALLY sick. On one hand, I know no one is irreplaceable and the world isn't going to end if I take a week off... on the other hand, enough crap will pile up in that time to make the next 2-3 weeks miserable. So I'd rather get an extra day off every other week or so than a block of 5 weeks straight.

When he takes a few days off in a row, he comes back to hundreds of emails to sift through. Destressing causes stress.

In the last 2 years I've earned 8 weeks, currently have 2 banked. So of 6 weeks used I'd say less than 2 weeks were for actual vacation. It sucks.

I've been at my current job in county government for 12 years. I already get 18 vacation days and 4 floating holidays. I think I carried over 8 or 9 days last year. It's hard to even take what I get...sick time we earn 1 day per month. I took off about 4 weeks sick last year following surgery at 100% pay and I still have a ton of sick time. No complaints here...I don't know that I'd want to work 10 hour days, but a 3 day weekend would be nice! I'd at least try it. To answer the OP, no, since I already get 4+ weeks vacation now, I would not work more for a 5th week...

If I got a paid lunch I would--that would only add a half hour to my day (I work 10 hours, half hour unpaid lunch).
Wait, I read the OP as an EXTRA 5 weeks, not five weeks total. On break so don't have time to read every post, but if it's five weeks total, no.

I'm on a normal shift so I get 3 weeks per year vacation (use it or lose it), use when needed sick (no limit) and every 7 years you get 8 weeks off in a row. Plus a floating holiday. Those on a compressed shifts work 3 twelve hour shifts one week and 4 the next. Once you hit 10 years you get an extra week. That means that if you work it right you can take a 16 week vacation when you're in year 14. It's not too bad for leave.

The comments about not liking PTO are interesting. It's one of the things I miss about my old company. Since I rarely get sick, it was like getting extra vacation for free. Now we have separate vacation and sick balances so I either lose sick time or "get sick" more often, but you can't get away with conveniently getting sick for the week right before a week of vacation.

I already work 10-12 hours/day only to have 3 weeks vacation. So yeah, I would definitely take what you are offering!

DH has 10 weeks banked. It used to be that you could bank up to 12 weeks and then you'd get paid off for what you didn't take if your bank was maxed out. Now you're only allowed to have 10 weeks in the bank and if you don't use it (the 4 wks/yr. you have coming to you), you lose it. DH banked all those days years ago when he was not making nearly what he makes now. In those days we did it to provide an extra cushion just in case he would become unemployed.

973beachbum: would you mind changing your comment to "giving out 'favour'". I think you can make the same point, but spare me from having to listen to a bunch of "why is this OK but not that" comments.

Now we have separate vacation and sick balances so I either lose sick time or "get sick" more often, but you can't get away with conveniently getting sick for the week right before a week of vacation. My company keeps suggesting going to PTO, but it gets shot down because it isn't a better deal. Right now I get 3 wks vacation, with the ability to bank 4 wks & 2 weeks sick with the ability to bank up to 7.5 weeks. For PTO they are suggesting I get 4 wks, with the ability to bank 5 weeks. So, I would be losing 1 week per year if you count sick + vacation, plus the most I can bank is 5 weeks vs 11.5 weeks. The latter is useful for things like maternity/paternity leave & long illnesses/surguries. If you were young & had no kids, then I could see the benefit of the PTO. Having given birth & now having kids that get sick a lot, I prefer the sick + vacation.

IMO, "PTO" vs "sick leave and personal leave" just encourages people to come in when sick. This problem can be reduced with banking, but not eliminated. DW's company only has PTO and no banking, so any leave taken in the beginning of the year means going into "leave debt".
If I knew I needed that 2 weeks off for a trip at christmas, and I got sick in October, I'd be coming in come hell or high water. I'd telework if possible, but I think that squeezing employees further is just greed on the part of the company.
For a while, the IRS went to a 4-10 schedule. The usage of "slick leave" went down, since 10 hours is quite costly.

I have a 35-hour work week with 3 weeks of vacation, 10 sick days, and 2 personal days. An extra 10 hours a week doesn't seem worth it.

Yes, I'm talking about an EXTRA 5 weeks.. i still wouldn't. I rather like my hours and in three years here i have yet to work 40 hours. I told myself i will never work 40 hours again, if Im lucky.

I've worked for the same employer for 6 years, and I get a ridiculous amount of time to the point where you simply can't use it all. I get 6 weeks of PTO, the week between Xmas and New Years, and then 5 personal days, I think it works out to be about 8 weeks of time off altogether. The only catch is that you can only carry over 2 weeks of PTO to the next year, so I always lose time at the end of the year. We do have a standard 45 hour work week versus a 40 hour work week.
The idea of an extra 5 weeks sounds great, but where I work, I struggle to take a full week off at time (despite having so much PTO), so I'd probably end up never using those 5 weeks.

I was thinking about this last night. 52 weeks in a year subtract 4 weeks for standard vacation = 48 weeks. Goal is 5 additional weeks of vacation or 200 hours. 43 weeks at work divided by 200 hours = 4.65hr/week. I'll round that up to 5 for my employer.. I would absolutely work 9 hour days if I could get 5 more weeks of vacation a year. *My employer does not offer this, this is pure fantasy.. How about you all? Before anything else, who the hell gets 4 weeks of vacation a year? I do ;D If I last until 17 years, it goes up to 5 weeks. I am on year 13 now.
