Today there was a power interruption, my lights went off for a second and my computer shut off. I went around and reset my clocks, and turned my computer back on. It seems to be running normally, but I can hear a quiet hissing sound, a little louder than normal. I turned it back off, very carefully vacuumed any dust, and it's still hissing louder than usual. I noticed the 2 fans are gunked up with dusty crud. I smoke in this room. Also, it is kinda warm in this room so now I turned on my tabletop fan. Any other suggestions, or advice? Do I need to get those little fan blades cleaned up? How??

ok thx chef, I'll go buy some canned air right now! Hope it helps. Is that what's causing the hissing noise? dirty fan blades? So why did it just start right after the power interruption? Coincidence??

If the canned air doesn't work, suek, drop a PM to Virgil and one to moonbeam. I know they won't mind helping if they know an answer for you.

So why did it just start right after the power interruption? Coincidence?? Surge of power when you started it up again, maybe.

Your computer wasn't shut off in the normal safe fashion. The sudden loss of power caused it to shut down. Usually to shut down you click on the Windows (or "Start") button in the lower left corner of your monitor, then click on this symbol at the bottom of the little screen that pops up [ ► ], then click on "Shut Down" to to it properly.
I'm no computer whiz, but I'd suggest that you do this - turn your computer off following those steps, and then restart to see if it clears up your noise problem.
Hope that helps.

I'm hoping it's not your power supply unit. If it is, I don't know what to tell you to do other than have it replaced. Virgil might know, though.

She might try doing a system restore to a time prior to the power surge too.

Since it happened right after a power surge, my thought is the power supply unit. They'll hiss like that, and that's the only thing I can think of that will hiss.
