Neighbor walks dog once or twice daily - loves to crap under lemon tree in our side yard (corner house.) Aside from basic decency, it is against HOA rules not to pick it up. Talked to her and her husband - they swear she picks it up but sitting at my desk I have birdseye view and nope, she just leaves it there. Stinks with windows open and live 7 miles from ocean because I like the windows open.
Just saw it again and mistakenly shouted out the window, "Excuse me, please wait, I want to talk to you." Did not know the Wicked Witch of the West could move that fast (she really looks like that - just needs the bicycle)!
Talked to management and they will address it if I make written complaint - that seems petty to me but what other choice do I have?

Put a camera on your desk and when you're sitting there record her leaving the dog crap there. Get her doing it a couple times and go to talk to her saying she needs to pick it up or the tape along with your formal complaint is going to the HOA.

Do you know where she lives? If she is lying about it I'd make use of the HOA and have them send her a letter of violation. If that doesn't work I'd make a home delivery.

When this was happening in my front yard, I finally left a pile of dog shit with a note next to it. A laminated note firmly attached to a stake, right next to the sidewalk where everyone could see it.
The note read: "This is the last time your dog will shit in my yard. If it happens again, I will deliver it to your mailbox. I know who you are." I left the note out until the next trash day.
Truth is, I don't know who it was. I did once pop out the front door and a woman and her dog went running...
But it's been over a year and I haven't had any dog crap since. ;D

Pick it up, put it in a paper bag. Set on fire and throw onto your neighbor's porch.

And this is why HOAs are necessary. Some people don't know how to function in society.

You could just put a sign out there saying something like, "This property is protected by security cameras." I bet that would fix her.

Justme - Love the camera idea.
Chef - not sure about the penalty, will have to look it up.
POM - Yes, I know where she lives - corner house across the street behind mine. Love the idea of a home delivery. Can it be from my dog - german shepherd? Much bigger than her little black scottie.
Malarky - Really like the laminated sign idea - against the rules but that makes me like it even more appealing - after all, just trying to help the situation w/o involvinh the mgmt which they appreciate.
Doesn't help that she looks like the wicked witch of the west down to the expression - alll she needs is the bicycle

You could rig a bag of dog crap onto a branch in the lemon tree, and run the string from the bag to your house.. When the dirty neighbor and dog stop, pull the string, and unleash the poop onto their unsuspecting heads. I'd try to miss the dog, though. The poor creature has no idea it's violating any HOA laws. The owner is the jerk, not the dog.

"Talked to management and they will address it if I make written complaint - that seems petty to me but what other choice do I have?" *Scoop the poop up, put it in a clear bag with a note saying her dog left this behind in your yard and attach it to their doorknob. It's just common courtesy to pick up after your own dog. I carried plastic bags with me every time I walked mine...attached them to the leash or put them in my pocket. That is a pet peeve of mine.

I've looked into this issue as I have a problem with neighbors dogs peeing on my lawn. The sign is fun to joke about, but it could be interpreted as a threat and someone who knows the rules (or who fights petty with more petty) could cause you some trouble on that one.
Same with the cameras. I'd considered rigging up cameras, and I was told that could backfire. When you put up cameras, you create an expectation that the neighborhood is under surveillance. The problem as I was told was if there was a crime committed that my camera didn't catch, *I* could get in trouble for failing to capture it or some stupid nonsense like that.
I agree with taking pictures of her though when you catch her in the act, and then after a few days have one last conversation with her and let her know that you won't ask again.
This was very effective getting that inconsiderate parker who kept taking two spaces to stop. All the notes left on his car did nothing. One letter from the HOA and it was never an issue again.

Someone in my neighborhood made little signs that said "good dog, bad owner" and stuck them in the ground next to offending piles. I'm not sure it worked...

My cat and the cat from across the street fight like crazy - which sucks, but they do it in the middle of the night in the back yard of my innocent bystander neighbor. So, I was researching some ideas the other day. The best one I came across was a sprinkler called "The Scarecrow." I offered to buy her one for her backyard. You hook it up to a hose, and it has a motion detector. When a cat sized animal comes into the path, the sprinkler starts spraying. If you hook it up and set it up just right, you could get it so the dog and possibly the owner would get sprayed when it came onto your property. If that dog owner has a good schedule you can get a timer so it would only go off during certain times of the day. Make sure you set it in such a way that it will only soak someone in your yard.

I'd probably be more tempted to return it than contact the HOA. I'm petty though.

Wow, you make me glad I live on a one-lane country road with five houses. The dogs (we ALL have dogs) pee wherever they like. They also crap wherever they like as long as it really isn't visible from your house. I go out and do a pick-up about once a month of whomever's dog has crapped where my dog likes to walk. Nobody cares. Of course, it helps that I have half-an-acre, the smallest lot on the street. The rest have 8, 10, and 15 acres. I felt the same way before I had a dog. I just didn't do the pickup. You people need bigger yards. Dogs are dogs. Dog poo is better to pick up after it has lost its stink. My two cents.

My kids play in the front yard. They climb the trees. If a dog is pooping at the base of the tree, there's a pretty good chance of at least some of it ending up on my carpets. And we don't have dogs just running around. You know that while that dog was pooping there, it's owner was standing right there holding the leash. How rude can you be not to pick up after your pet while on a strangers property?
If I end up cleaning their dog's poo out of my carpets because they're an inconsiderate toolbag, the least I can do is return the favor by chucking the next present they leave at their house, car, porch, etc. Maybe while they're cleaning that up they'll realize that it would be a lot easier to pick up after their animal in the first place, or take walks after the dog has done it's business in their own yard.

You are probably right, DH. Everyone here has too much acreage to worry about their kids playing in it. As long as you stay far, far away from the houses, no one cares. And there are few kids. (But lots of dogs.) When I lived in a garden home, I would get annoyed because the kids would play in my backyard and slide down the hill adjoining me and the neighbors. Most of the houses had fenced backyards. The three of us had the only open yards. They would kill my grass, etc. But still they were kids. Where do you play as kids if all your parents fence off your small backyards? I belong to a live-and-let-live mentality. Tell your kids to wipe their feet before they come in.

Tell your kids to wipe their feet before they come in. They're finally getting better about that, but it's taken most of a decade. Now if I could just train our dog to watch where she steps and wipe her feet before coming in we'll be set.

It depends - do you know how sane she is? If she is OK, I would catch her next walk and say "Look - I saw you - I get your dog needs to go, but you really need to pick it up from my yard. I don't want to go through the hassle of the HOA."
If she is nutso just go directly to the HOA.

Sarah - LOL!! Yes, even better from your bigger dog. You can leave her a note telling her that her "deposit" earned interest. ;D Is this what she looks like? This pictures cracks me up!

Well, I'm kinda on the mean side sometimes. What you need to do is go find a turkey farm....just tell them you need some turkey shit for your small garden. Might have to pay for, maybe not. That stuff is like the worst shit to have to smell. After you're done gagging, you take it and drop it in her yard. When she screams and yells, you laugh and say yeah, karma is a real bitch. Clean your dog's shit up.

I'd leave her "little angel's" pile right on her front step. No need to leave a note. Do that a few times, & she should get the message. I used to have a neighbor's dog that used my front yard as his toilet. I'd just shovel it up, & it on their front yard. No confrontation, no arguing. It was amazing how those little piles stopped happening... ;D
