What are they asking, and why does a 2007 only have 40,000 miles on it?? That seems really low to me, but we drive about 30,000+ miles per year on our two cars.

Check the book value. There are SO many scammers on CL, if it's listed much below book, it's probably a scam...

I come from a family of auto workers and EVERYONE buys brand new. Most of the time, you'll know after an email or two. Go ahead, email them and tell them you'd like to look at it and ask when and where it can be seen. If you get a response with some long, crazy explanation of where they are/where the car is/their cousin will be handling the deal/etc., run far away. Or, if the grammar is terrible, or a combination of all of the above. Unless you can confirm it is someone local, I'd stay far away.

My 2000 Pontiac has about 130,000 - nothing but maintenance - no problems ever and still love it. Planning to go to 200,000 at least. I like to buy new, finance at 0% and drive it until the wheels fall off - sometimes literally!
No problems with last one too - except I totaled it one month before last payment was due. Rear-ended an SUV just wrong at 5mph on 4th of July in Salinas, CA. I have always loved Pontiacs and have never had problems with them - hate it that GM stopped production. Even have my eye on a nice little red SUV a few blocks from here owned by a little old lady and gentleman who seem to drive it just enough.
Good friend of mine has driven them for about 35 years w/o a problem too although she trades every 2-5 years as a business expense and is very very high mileage.

Depends on what was rebuilt and who did it. I wouldn't offer anything on it unless they are willing to let you have an independent mechanic look it over and give you an estimate.
I am taking my dad's Impala which is now a "rebuilt salvage title". All that wis wrong with with it is the trunk was smashed in. The insurance company decided it was cheaper to salvage it. Otherwise it's a totally solid car. It has to have the salvage title because my dad negociated to keep it rather than have the insurance company take it.
Same thing happened with DH's truck. Really all we would have had to do is purchase a new truck bed but the insurance company salvaged it. We decided to let the gas guzzler go rather than negociate.

We've bought several older low mileage cars - you get the "Grandma only drove it to church on Sunday" lines - but have been pretty pleased. For DD we actually bought a 1996 Pontiac in 2007 that had 70k miles on it. We were a bit suspect on the mileage, and I was never a fan of GM cars, but the car has been awesome. Only had to put tires and fix one window on it for the first 5 years. Replaced the struts last week though. Hoping it will last my daughter a couple more years, currently only ~90k miles. On the rebuilt "salvage title" I would try to find out as much info as I can, have a good mechanic check it out. My brother bought one a while back and later found out if was in a flood. A lot of the parts worked when he got it but wore out quickly since they had been underwater at one time.

Uh-oh. It's a "rebuilt salvage title". That's one of the worse things you can buy, isn't it? All that really means is the car was in an accident & insurance chose to total the car rather than pay for repairs. Without knowing what kind of accident & repairs were required (and who did the repairs) it is hard to say how bad it is. I had a car that was totaled by insurance & then kept (so would have a salvage title). All that happened was the fender was dented - the car still drove perfect. I got $300 less from insurance because I chose to keep the car.

It's highly dependent upon the person's commute. Right now, my commute is generally 4 miles a day (to and from the train station). Even adding in the occasional drive to work and weekend driving, and I probably put about 6,000 miles a year onto my car.

How much are they asking ? Oops, $8500. What is wrong with it? Nevermind. You said it was a salvaged title.

According to consumer reports, the 2007 model of the Grand Prix has an average used car prediction, but none of the systems fall under the below average category.

Just looking at the picture, I would say it had damage to the front driver side at least. Repair was not that good if I can tell just looking at the picture. The alignment of the hood and the quarter panel is off. There may have been more mechanical damage that will not be noticeable right away.

KBB is the average listing price for sale of vehicles. Look at Edmunds for average actual sale prices. I doubt that is enough of a discount for a salvage title.
My DDs car was rear ended & repaired at a bodyshop referred by the insurer. It was a $5K repair, but not salvage level damage. The dealer would offer us about $2K below normal trade in value because this history was in carfax. People don't want to buy cars that have been in accidents.

Well, it sure is a pretty car, but I would research the blue book value on it, and find out how much it would cost to insure it, and see if that would fit into your budget. I'm wondering if these are crappy cars because they don't make them anymore. Also, unless I did something wrong, KBB says it should sell for $2k more... GM discontinued the Pontiac line, that's why they don't make them anymore.
