For those that have served, choose to serve and those whom will choose to serve in the Armed Forces and their families there are several statements that change them forever.
Soldier to Family
"I have joined the military" "I am being deployed" "I wish I could have been there"
Country to Family
"We regret to inform you ---"
We should take a moment to ponder the fact that most folks join the Military because they Love their country, not because of any political motivation.
We should also take a moment to realize that all whom serve are never the same, that whether or not they serve in Combat they end up changed for the experience.
Those who serve are not faceless, they are not anonymous - they are Sons, Daughters, Brothers, Sisters, Fathers, Mothers - Neighbors, Friends...
They sacrifice so very much to serve, protect and Honor what they hold most dear. They show extraordinary courage in the face of untenable situations. They display exceptional Valor in the hardest situations and often in the worst of places. And in the darkest hours many have made the Ultimate Sacrifice, they have laid down their lives, so that we may live ours.
There are a couple of Statements that let Those who serve and their families know that the sacrifices are not for not -
From a citizen to a Soldier
"Thank you for your service"
From a citizen to a Soldier's Family
"Thank You"

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Beautiful, DI. Thanks for posting it, and a personal "Thank you" to all who have served, are serving, and will serve. Thanks, too, to the families who love them.

Thanks, DI. My husband served during Vietnam. Nothing but disgust and disdain back then for his service. It's different now, as it should be.
