Let's see. My Breyers Vanilla says : milk, cream, sugar and salt. Hmm. sounds pretty natural to me. My yogurt says: cultured milk, high fructose corn syrup, whey protein, corn syrup, modified food starch, pectin, c arrageenan, potassium sorbate. Enjoy your health delusion. The only reason i have yogurt on hand is to take to work because my ice cream would met. I think i would rather have my kids eat the ice cream. there's this thing called plain yogurt. It only contains bacterial cultures, whey, and milk. Don't be ignorant of the benefits because you choose yogurt full of junk. Oh sure. I am sure people sending yogurt into the schools or bringing those for snacks are going to bring those. Most likely they are going to bring Danimals or yogurt in a tube or whatever.

You're a dirty hippy, Dark.. that isn't food! Next time they're all getting flat bread, humus, goat cheese, apple slices, and maybe some grapes. Now that's a snack!

"The parents aren't standing right there if a child is in grade school. Does a child with a peanut allergy have any right to attend school? "
I dunno if you missed it or what, but we're talking about playdates with parents present. And in fact I specifically prefaced my remarks by stating that it applied to parent-attended playdates.
But yes, a child with a peanut allergy does have the right to attend school. They also have the right not to have someone force them into eating peanuts. Schools are full of things that could kill kids, it's up to the kids and the school staff to return them home alive.

I never "did" playdates when the kids were younger. They've started getting calls from classmates and so far none of the kids have allergies. DS started playing t-ball this year and there was note with the snack list stating "we have some allergies on the team: peanuts and spicy foods". WTE? First of all, "spicy foods" isn't an allergy (a specific spice would be) and secondly, who is going to bring something spicy to a game for 6 year olds anyway?? It's my turn to bring snack this week and I'm going with Rice Crispy Treats. Maybe it'd be easier for everyone to bring their own. I don't remember "snacks" being part of T-ball.

::If so, bring a snack that is considered "healthy" (even if you know it is pure bunk) like granola bars or fruit rollups which in reality are no healthier than a candy bar or anything else.:: What kind of candy bar? A fruit rollup is MUCH more healthy than a Snickers bar (or other mainstream candy bars). Nope....your pancreas treats them both the same....except that the peanuts are actually digested a big slower and therefore and healthier. Both are predominantly sugar and our body treats them the same.

But it all depends on what the parents buy and what the kids will eat. The pediatrician tried to get me to buy vanilla Yo Baby yogurt for our 10 month old. Um, no. He's been eating full fat plain yogurt with pureed fruit every day at lunch and he LOVES it! No need to introduce refined sugars when he is more than happy with what he gets.

So far I've been banned from bringing anything at ALL related to nuts, dairy, sugar, gluten. No saltines, pretzels, no "fruity" snacks, no strawberries, no juice boxes. I am down to carrots and celery sticks Lena Lena.....tell them if they don't like what you bring then they can provide their own snacks....Geez.

Here's a popsicle recipe that's never been turned down by any kid I've ever given it too (although a few did pause and make faces when hearing the ingredients - before they returned to finish eating it). Straight from hippieville . . . happy summer! (When mine were little they often had more than one per day & I was fine with it).
GREEN GOBLIN POPS 1 small fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks 2-3 medium bananas, peeled and cut into chunks 1 bag baby spinach
Blend all of these ingredients together in a high-speed, heavy-duty blender (like a vitamix) until smooth, pour into popsicles molds and freeze.
Send me a pm if you want more like this . . .

And now I'm hungry. I'm thinking a fresh spinach and smoked turkey pita. Whole wheat of course. With a little mustard and quinoa. Mmm, and we still have smoked mozzarella at home. I should have brought some.

I know this tread is about food allergies but the only thing I can think about is the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where it is Debra's turn to bring a snack for the kids basketball or soccer game (some sport) and it is not on the "approved" snack list.

I ain't spending goat cheese money on kids! Please, my kids will probably be the only ones who eat any, so I'd really be spending the money on my own snacks. If you bring a case of coke and a huge box of ice cream bars, those little vultures will clean you out in under 5 minutes. If you bring real food, especially of the odd smelling cheese or veggie variety, you get to leave with all your food, but you still took your turn for snack duty.

I was able to eat anything and everything until a couple years ago (mid 30s). I don't know if it is aging or what but now I have to severely limit my dairy/gluten/eggs. As in, I can eat a bite or two once a week. I haven't had a beer in two years. The longer I avoid these items, the less sick I feel when I do cheat so I try to "save up" my cheating. I don't give a shit that being GF is trendy - actually I like it because it means there are more GF products out there.
Earlier in my kids' lives they were allergic to eggs/dairy/gluten/soy (neither my DH or I had allergies as kids). Over time they have outgrown most of it. None of it was anaphylaxis, but a 2yo covered in hives isn't exactly fun either. Nor is endless diarrhea. I honestly don't get the lack of empathy on this thread. We're talking about children here.
Now, I've always brought my own food to any event and I've never asked anyone to cater to my children's needs. Most parents I know who deal with allergies do the same. Honestly, it is much safer to bring your own food than to trust that the other adults brought appropriate food. Especially with more severe allergies - I don't want my child suffering because some idiot didn't understand whey is dairy.
I also don't understand the need to have food at every event. It's like people can't go an hour or two without putting food in their mouths. Eating doesn't seem to be about hunger anymore at all - it's all about socializing. No wonder obesity is such a problem.

And my parents call me overprotective for sending my kid out with his mobility bag. DS has food allergies. Anytime we go anywhere we always make sure to bring his food with us. We are dealing with nuts, eggs and sesame seeds. We were thrilled when he outgrew soy. When people accomodate his allergies it's great. But I also don't understand why other parents who have kids on a restricted diet for one reason or another don't make sure their kid has something to eat just in case. I can see the schools banned nuts because it's a CYA move. Parents complain because they can't send in peanuts but if something happens then those same parents would be complaining because the school didn't do more to protect the kid. But play dates? If your kid has allergies/sensitivities/picky bring a backup.

Although they also happily chow down on my Yoplait yogurts. Given a choice, they opt for the plain one. Kids are odd.

We were thrilled when he outgrew soy. I bet you were. DH is on GF, DF and limited refined sugars and limited soy. It's freaking HARD to be no soy on top of everything else.

Deep fried twinkies have no peanuts and are not spicy so they should be good - right? And don't forget the deep fried, chocolate covered bacon ;D

And of course it must all be fresh, wholesome, and 100% "Organnnnic" ... Well, I do get pesticide free organic spinach. The amount of pesticides and crap they spray on lettuce here is kind of obscene otherwise, and there's no way you're going to convince me that a quick rinse under the sink is getting all that stuff off. If the pesticides washed off that easy they'd be worthless since they'd rinse off every time the crop was watered.
