I ate lunch at my desk today. Since my office is in a pretty high traffic area, I usually close the door and draw the miniblinds at the window so people aren't watching me eat as they go by.
Today a coworker friend just walked in my office - didn't even knock. I thought that was rather rude. So is she nuts for just barging in or am I nuts for expecting someone to knock?

door closed = knock unless you are my wife. And even then, if you barge in you don't have the right to be surprised at what you find.

That's why I never repeat never ate at my desk. No one recognized that it was my lunch hour. Once we were under hurricane warning so I just went and ate lunch in my car. And yes RUDE to answer your question.

Meghan - I guess I should have, but I think I was just so shocked that I didn't say anything about it. There was no actually no real harm done, but it was weird and for all she knew I could have been taking a personal phone call or something. NNP - Glad you didn't get blown away in the hurricane.

I used to put a sign on the door that had a cow on it and it said "Do not disturb" and everyone knew I was pumping. Of course, that went away when I stopped breast feeding. =( That probably wouldn't work in your situation.

Thanks for the idea, but I don't think anyone is going to believe a 51 year old childless woman is pumping. OTOH, if I could find someone who would believe it, maybe I could sell them some junk wonderfully expensive antiques out of my basement and retire tomorrow.

Extremely rude. I close my door from time to time when I'm busy or eating lunch in and even my boss knocks before coming in. If a co-worker just barged in, friend or not, they would get a real earful.

I always told my boss that I only closed the door when I was setting up interviews...for me. Ha, ha, ha. Well, it was a joke when I worked for him.

Does your door have a lock on it? I used to pump in my office and a couple of times maint. came in despite the door being locked... once even after I had a sign up. After that, the sign when over the keyhole...

I agree it's a bit extreme but if you want/need alone time, you take it any way you can get it (speaks the mom off 2 kids under the age of 4...)

At a former job, I once had a coworker walk into MY office, push the papers I had laid out on my desk (on which I was working) aside, and set her lunch plate in the middle of my desk.

It's just rude to barge in on anyone.
If I was just eating lunch I wouldn't necessarily lock the door, unless the barging in happens again.
When I was breastfeeding and pumping I ALWAYS locked the door!

wow, this thread title brings back memories of visiting folks on the other side of the wall in Berlin (East GErmany) They'd invite you in, close and lock the door, draw the shades, turn off nearly all the lights, turn up the record player and say to you "now we can talk"

It is totally rude.
I worked at a CPA firm where our lunch hours were assigned. I brought my lunch. I closed the door so as to have it my time to relax. I can not tell you the number of times the boss would just walk in.
I was never doing anything wrong, but he should have had the decency to knock and not discuss work during my lunch hour--especially since he timed our lunch hours.

In my office when I have my door closed people will knock but then they will open the door without waiting for me to respond. I guess it's a little better than not knocking at all but... not that much. Part of the problem is that if my door is closed they don't know if I'm there or not. A lot of the time they just need to give me something that they will leave on my chair if I'm not there.

I approach it as follows:
- Door almost shut with a small crack, I peep in and if the person looks up, I enter slowly. - Door closed = I come back later, unless it is an emergency in which case I knock.

Can you get one of those signs "back at 1:00" ? Maybe then people MIGHT get the idea.... That wouldn't work. Then, if someone needed to just leave you something, they'd assume you weren't there and would just walk in. Thankfully people here knock and wait for a response. But my door is generally open, and it's open when I'm not here, so if the door is closed they get the message.

If my boss's door is shut I know he doesn't want to be disturbed. If it is really important I tell the secretary or I shoot him an email. If his door is open I always knock and wait for a response. If I am not sure I'll ask the secretary if he is busy before knocking.
