If you were to just say screw it and start over--what would you go into? Would you go for more money, less stress? What careers do you think are best bets for the coming years?

There are lots of interesting careers. Healthcare is always interesting. Owning a restaurant or ice cream shop seems cool. Being a pet groomer might be kind of fun.

I have an IT and clerical background. I am currently enrolled in a Power Generation program at my local CC which will allow me to find a job as a power plant operator. Not sure it is what I really want to do for a living, but it seems to be a fairly in demand job and the skills taught interest me.

If I could only figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up!lol I would gladly make less money if I could find a career that I didn't hate...what I won't do is stay in the same field and take less money.

If I could only figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up!lol
I started my job 28 years ago as a stopgap while I figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I intended to finish school but I had figured out that it was an expensive place to flounder, with no clear idea of what I should be when I grow up. No clue yet.
I do think that now that the kids are almost grown that I would make an excellent stay at home Mom-when they were younger-not so much.
I also think I would make an awesome Oprah. Will someone please pay me to talk about stuff I find interesting?
I'm lucky, I've held my job for such a long time and it and my role have evolved. I'm not sure that I could work in a conventional workplace.

Do something you love, or, work for an organization that you're passionate about. I could use more money, but I'm at that age where it's not all about the money. I need to live my life too!

Programming or database administration. I have no idea what the market is in those fields, but I enjoy both. Tentative plans based on our current commitments is for me to do the SAHP thing when children arrive, and as they need less of my time, spend more of it working on those skill sets. Even if I'm not employed, there's a list of projects that we have that would be interesting or useful for me to work on, and it would keep my brain engaged between reading the same book out loud 500 times.

I think I would want to do something more formulaic where you know exactly what your job is, and you just do it and then go home. I've been thinking court reporter would be a good choice. Data entry would work too.

There are two parts of my job I really enjoy - research/writing and data collection. The rest of my duties range from slightly interesting to somewhat tolerable, so sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I'd gone into a very research/data-intensive field. I think marketing would have been a good fit - not the ad-designer side, but the demographics/surveying/summarizing side... Still, every job has its frustrations, and I might have found that once I was doing that full-time, I wished to do something else. And I doubt I would have the same earning potential I do now.
I think there is going to be a great demand for elder services in the coming decades. From estate planning to taxi/companionship services, assisted-living facilities, medical devices/services - demand is going to go up across the board. So as far as booming (haha) career possibilities, anything in the elder field is probably a good bet.

Project managers and software configuration managers/release managers should stay in strong demand. Even when the programming is off-shored, the management of the releases are often handled from the US. DBA's seem to always be in demand also.

Nurse researcher. They make really good money. I didn't even know that this exisisted back when I was in school. To completely start over I'd have to go back to square one and earn my BS in nursing.
I can't begin to predict what careers will be best for years to come. When I was in school there was a huge boom in funding for research so what I am doing now was very much in demand. Six years out the game changed and now there are more techs than funding.
Based on what is going on here on campus I'd said the Public Health sector is growing rapidly and there is a big demand.

I'm starting to convince myself I'd make a good florist. When i get home i'll post my mothers day flower arrangements i made this weekend. It would have been cheaper to just buy a couple of arrangements and claimed credit! I fell into medical editing and it's been treating me well. Thank gods!

A job that I could also do at home. I'd love to be home one or two days a week.

That too! I used to assist with the planning of an area hospital's annual gala. My former boss was the committee chair for a couple of years, so she would put me on the planning committee. Black tie affairs are fun!

There doesn't seem to be much opportunity for growth in the sitting on my ass drinking beer and watchign TV field of employment.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd be a pterodactyl.

I took this with my phone, so it's a bit fuzzy, but I made these arrangements for my Mom and "Mother-out-law."
