As I was reading one of the lastest conservative rants I started wondering how people who say they are religious could day in and day out go against some pretty basic tenets of their faith. So is it possible the crazy conservatives who see religous issues and persecution everywhere they look are really the new Pharisees not the legit believing Christian masses?
The Pharisees were all about appearance and power. They cared about outer trappings and cared little if any for inner wisdom. They were always right and of course in their opinion everyone else was wrong.
Would Christ if he walked the planet today embrace these people who cry there is no Christ in Christmas anymore? Would he applaud making up lies about others or would he remind them of the big mote in their eye? Would he celebrate making life harder for the least of these, i.e. reducing social programs and other supports?
I think Christ spent most of his time talking about how to be a good person. He didn't spend all that much time defining what a Roman or a Pharisee was. Yet our crazy conservatives don't model after Christ. They don't live exemplary lives and give to God what is God and render to Caesar what is Caesars. They act like Pharisees. Defining everyone besides themselves as bad. Spending most of their time on outside appearances and vilifying everyone else. They want to raise up their own Caesar and tear down any they don't like.
I think the Pharisees are back. They think they are religious conservatives. I don't think Christ would be fooled.
So what do you think? Do you agree new Pharisees walk the planet?

It's fine to point the figure but we are primarily supposed to look at our own selves and actions.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Let's not turn this into a "what's wrong with the other guy" discussion. That's going to result in insults being thrown, insults being taken, and that's not what this forum is about, or for. Sharing ideas is great. Learning about the beliefs of others is great. Putting down ideas and beliefs isn't great. It's demeaning. Please, let's not go that way. That's what lost us a place to discuss religion and belief systems before. Keep it respectful. Seek to learn rather than to deplore. Thanks.

Sorry Mmhmm. Thinking about one of the latest rants made me come to this conclusion. I knew this thread would die early anyway. I'm not a troll that people usually come to play with.

S'okay, Optimist. I just don't want to see a battle develop in this particular forum, for obvious reasons.

Pharisees come in all stripes. Another word for them that Jesus used is hypocrites. Jesus also said, "Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone"; and "remove the beam from your own eye before trying to remove the spec of sawdust from your brother's eye".

Yeah but Jesus was a little brown man and a Jew, you're ok with that. Anyway, I don't do religion even if my kids are in Catholic school (I can assure you, Catholics are the original Christians), it just seems all so pointless. Catholic schools have a far superior education outcome...and those uniforms, you have to love those uniforms.

Having scanned a few of the threads on this page, and taken note of "the usual suspects", I feel that I know a few of my neighbors just a little bit better as a result. But I am also reminded of an old saying: "Neurotics built castles in the sky, psychotics live in them... and psychiatrists collect the rent."
Fantasizing can be entertaining, but properly discerning between fantasy and reality is essential to mental health.

If the analogy to today's Conservatives are: Pharisees...
What is the analogy for the rabid types workin' the Far Left side of the aisle?
