I am leaving this weekend for an Alaskan cruise and sort of in that mode of not caring what I spend. This is all within reason, of course... I am not the type to just go blow a bunch of money but considering I paid for the entire cruise AND all of the scheduled excursions back in March I am just not too concerned about what I spend once I get there. I generally keep close track of all my expenses even while on vacation but right now I am in that "I don't care" mode. If I want an expensive drink (or five) with a little umbrella in it I am getting it, if I feel like going to the spa I am going, and I also plan to drop a little money in the casino. It just really feels good to know that I don't have to worry about every nickel and dime while I am there.

I bought an airplane ticket to a 12/12/12 wedding last week because it was on sale for $355 - to the Caribbean. I'm kinda ignoring the fact that time off is usually not approved after Nov 1st.

Crazy how people are deteriorating after just a few days of an off-topic board. Have a blast!

Good for you! I am a pretty conservative person throughout most of the year...we do a few vacations a year and that is my "live in the moment" time. I want to see and do everything I can so I don't even think about the money. Hey, I could be dead before I retire...if not, there is always swamp's cat food suggestion

I find that I get desensitized during the coarse of a vacation. At first I'm watching every cost and calculating the exchange rate. But by the end, it's like "OK fine, whatever"

Enjoy yourself!
Bf and i are going on our long-postponed trip to Cooperstown at the end of this month and i definitely set our food and drink budget high. I am also bringing plenty of whatever cash. This was originally my 30th birthday trip and i am still planning on celebrating like it's my birthday!

I put so much money in my extra checking account (so I don't take the debit card that's attached to my main account with more money in it) and then just be a little careful. But ultimately, I'll spend good money on something I think is worth it, and if I don't think it's worth it, I won't.

Do share all the details when you get back. My DD and I are going in August and I'm just now starting to come up with the list of excursions we want to take.

But by the end, it's like "OK fine, whatever" I'm almost the opposite. I tend to be a little money conscious throughout the whole thing, but the expenditures at the beginning don't generally bother me. It's the end of the trip where I start thinking "oh shit....how much have I spent so far?"

It's the end of the trip where I start thinking "oh shit....how much have I spent so far?" I try not to do that calculation! DH and I are also going to Alaska in July. We just made the final payment on the cruise- we'd been saving it up over the last year so the money was all there. We've also booked and paid for the flights in and out of Seattle (airline award seats), Seattle to Wrangell, the Wrangell-Ketchikan ferry, and Juneau-Seattle airfare. There are still a few hotels to be paid, plus alcohol on the cruise. Excursions are included and the ship is a small one with no casino, premium dining rooms, art auctions or other money-grabbers, although I may have to rent a wet suit just so I can say I went swimming in a fjord. I know we'lll leave a trail of credit-card receipts, but we'll deal with them. We're on vacation. Typically, though, we're still frugal in some respcts on our vacations. We take public transportation if it makes sense, although I'm more likely now to book a taxi from the hotel to the airport for an early AM flight. And I still remember the hamburgers in Zagreb. We'd had to switch hotels because the first didn't have hot water when we arrived, grungy and jet-lagged from the US, and we woke up at midnight unable to sleep. DH wanted a hamburger and went out looking for a restaurant that was open. None whatsoever. Get room service, I told him. So, we ordered room service, paid whatever they charged, and DH made a mistake in calculating what the currency was worth and gave the young waitress a tip that was about 80% of the bill. Good thing the platter included 2 hamburgers. They smelled so good I was hungry, too. They were perfect. Sometimes you just gotta relax about the money.
