There was a big ceremony made over the official May 7th "middle of the night" signing of the surrender documents. Eisenhower refused to sit in, as did some others. Several hours were required for the Germans to communicate the fact of surrender to their field commanders and May 8th became the "official" day the war ended. (But of course the fighting didn't stop, and pockets of it kept cropping up all over Europe for several days. The plan was that the surrender would be annouinced simultaneously by all the Allied powers at the same time. But that was only a plan. One AP correspondent, Edward Kennedy, either didn't appreciate the protocol involved, or he just wanted to be the first to report the news. He sent his dispatch before he was supposed to, and it cost him his job. The military was mad as hell and AP fired him. That was 67 years ago today. But things have changed, and AP has issued him an apology. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2139571/Edward-Kennedy-receives-apology-fired-reporting-German-World-War-II-surrender.htmlHappy VE Day to the greatest generation. I wonder what tings would be like if they were still in charge.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.
