While reading this thread I realized I have a lot of dishes! A small set of Buffalo china, from our first apartment. Nice, plain white, but too big and heavy. A set of blue and grey stoneware, I think collected from Wegmans (Mom thought we needed more plates). Also too heavy. A motley assortment of Corelle that we use everyday - lighter weight, thinner (stack better), not as big as platters (DH thinks he has to fill the plate up). Corelle is generally more forgiving of a kid dropping a dish, but I did lose a handful of plates and bowls when a stack mysteriously slid off the counter and shattered into a million shards of glass. Hence the current assortment of patterns. A great aunt gave me a set of china before I married, that I try to remember to use for special occasions. Mom has begun giving me place settings of another pattern for birthdays, etc. She seems to think that I missed out, not registering for china when I married, and she needs to fix it. Not sure where I'll put all the new set of china when I get enough to set the table w/ it. I've even got plates for camping (blue enamel) and for picnics (brightly colored plastic from Target). I really hate paper plates. ;D

We got 2 sets of plain white stoneware from the Dollar General store (on clearance for $4 each) when we were having a dinner party once & needed place settings for 8. And none of the pieces have broken yet which is amazing. I don't see us upgrading any time soon.

We might have the same stoneware. My screams "WE GOT MARRIED IN 1997." It is very loud. I've had to soundproof the cabinet. I still love the dishes and they look great - just dated. LOL! I have Mikasa's Dialogue. I bought them at the BX as a great deal before I moved to TX....in 1985. They scream the southwestern trend of the 1980s, but still like them. I have only broken one salad plate in 27 years.

I have a case of 24 restaurant quality cream colored dinner dishes and 36 dessert dishes I ordered from servu.online about 10 years ago. I've dropped them on the ceramic tile and haven't broken one yet. They're a very plain, classic style, heavy with a nice lip. I like being able to have parties and not use paper plates, we even take them outdoors. I also have some vintage delicate cream china dishes with a raised rose pattern. I think they must have been a very popular pattern at one time because I picked up pieces of the same set at 4 different yard sales. They're more like luncheon plates, so they look nice layered with the restaurant plates and there are bowls to match. I also have a collection of different size and patterned wine glasses, all clear glass (some crystal, some not) with frosted floral/leaf pattern, similar style, but not the same pattern and bowls, trays, stands, etc. that either coordinate with the dishes or the glasses. With all of the hard pieces neutral, I can change the look of the table with linens, centerpieces and candle colors.

For years I had cheap dishes that would break way too easy & get way too hot in the microwave. Just a few months ago I noticed many dishes with the corelle pattern butterfly gold at the thrift store. It is the same pattern my parents have been using I think since they got married, so it reminded me of my childhood. So, I bought everything I could find with that pattern the next few times I was at the thrift store. I love how thin the stuff is & how well it stacks. I also remember it is fairly indestructable from my childhood.

I have tons of dishes! I love dishes and glassware. I used to have Mikasa and gave it to my mom because I changed my color scheme. I registered for china when I got married the first time and didn't even take it with me when I left. I didn't want any china the second time I married. I have Monkey wood dishes (from the Philippine Islands), Mexican theme dishes from Pier 1, red and yellow dishes, Mediterranean dishes (hand made and different colors), Palm Tree dishes, Christmas dishes and green with pears/Thanksgiving dishes... My favorite every day ones? My red plastic ones. I have glass tables and cherry furniture and I can put them anywhere and not worry about scratches. Those are my favorite ones. LOL!

But, then I don't really care much about dishes. It never would have occurred to me to buy new dishes to match my kitchen. Probably because my parents have used the same dishes for over 35 years, so to me dishes were something you just keep forever (until they break).

My wedding china is a little strange: also Mikasa, but the plates are black, with a pink and white calla lilly design. Yes, I know food on black plates is strange, but I love the set. Holy china- I have the same pattern. We have some stoneware for everyday. But we also have some Christmas china, and some other that was passed down and expecting another set passed along soon. It's a family thing.

Not a big priority here. My Ex brought 2 sets of china into the marriage (one Royal Doulton, one Rosenthal) and took them with him. I got the everyday dishes, Fitz and Floyd's "Nobilis" pattern. It's a shell design. DH says it looks like the kind of dishes that gas stations used to give away.
DH had plain white china and that's what we use most of the time, supplemented by some plates and mugs we've bought at craft fairs. We chose a sterling silver flatware pattern and have a nice set, but chose not to buy more china because it can break if you drop it. Silver is much more durable!
My Ex's sister has a set of Flora Danica. Every piece is hand-painted. We used it once at Christmas dinner. Beautiful stuff, but I was paranoid about dropping it!

for everyday I have a hodgepodge of stuff but have been wanting a new, matching set for a while now. I really like the square, all-white they have at kohls (I think it is Food Network brand) but am having trouble spending that much. I also have 4 place settings of black octagonal dishes (dinner, salad, bowl, plus wine glasses, and did have silverware) that I received as a shower gift. My china is Noritake Halifax and I use it for special occasions, as well as sometimes Bunco and Book Club. singlemom: Do you have a Kohl's card? If you do, they should be sending you a 30% off coupon (off your entire purchase) two or three times a year. Every time I want to make a more expensive purchase at Kohl's, I wait for one of those coupons. If a sale on the item and the 30% off coupon do not line up, I just wait until the next 30% off coupon comes out. HTH My most recent mailer had a 30% (I usually get the 15%) so I may take a look.
