I have corelle with some blue and orangy-pink flower trim. I got them for a wedding present, my uncle works at Corning, so he probably got them at the company store at some kind of discount.
I have a beautiful set of Spode China I bought from an estate for $300, it gets used at holidays.

I have a set of corelle that I use. It's off-white with some sort of a blue pattern around the edge. It used to be my dad's -- he gave it to me when I went to law school. I also have a brown set that someone had given XF and I as a condo-warming gift. I use that too.

I use my everyday stuff which was bought at Wal-Mart. I have two sets of beautiful china in my dining room hutch. One set is my grandmother's wedding china and the other set is my great-grandmother's wedding china. I always mean to use them when someone comes to dinner but I can't bring myself to. I'm too afraid of breaking them.
But I agree with whomever said to use your nice stuff if that's what you want. You can't take it with you! Ask my grandmother and great-grandmother!

My "everyday" china is plain white Dansk. I do have a set of dishes that my former MIL gave me that are gorgeous. Cream bone china with a green Acantus leaf design around the rims. It's about a service for 9 or 10 now since I used it for my "good" china for years and broke a few pieces. I've packed it up and put it in the garage so that if DS ever wants it, he can have it, although I might just see if DSD or DIL wants it since it doesn't look like DS will ever get married or want the china.
I also have a set of Royal Worcester "Evesham Gold" dinnerware that I almost never use. We don't have room to store it in this house and so it's packed in boxes in the garage. If we move to another house with more cabinet space, I'd like to take it out and use it for special occasions.

I agree with this in principle. But not in practice. If DH's grandmother (and mother) had used theirs everyday, we would not still have the set.
I remember holiday dinners when MIL used the dishes. She had a bad tremor and I still remember my heart being in my throat as she would pass a 100 year old gravy dish with hot gravy in it and everything shaking....
That dish is now in my glass door shelf where I can admire it, but no way am I going to use it!

I'm familiar with that Christmas set and have admired it for a long time... It actually coordinates with my regular set (Filigree), but I haven't purchased any because I just don't want anything I can't use all the time.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wanted the Lenox Holiday china for years but didn't want to buy something I only used once or twice a year. I finally gave in a few years back, and it makes me happy everytime I use it.

Green is an earthtone. The green ivy correll dishes will "go" just fine in a brown kitchen. That shit doesn't go with anything.

Everyday is Mikasa stoneware, white with blue, red and green rims.
My wedding china is a little strange: also Mikasa, but the plates are black, with a pink and white calla lilly design. Yes, I know food on black plates is strange, but I love the set.
I inherited my grandmother's gold-rimmed Noritake service for 12. It includes all the service pieces, such as the gravy boat, cheese platter, meat platter, sugar and creamer. The set is her wedding china, so it is now 80 years old. It must all be handwashed, and the dinner plates seem so small compared to today's plates!
I also have my mother's coffee and dessert service, which is also gold-rimmed. I gave her wedding china (white Limoges with a gray star pattern on the rim) to my niece, since I already have several sets, and she had nothing really nice for entertaining.

for everyday I have a hodgepodge of stuff but have been wanting a new, matching set for a while now. I really like the square, all-white they have at kohls (I think it is Food Network brand) but am having trouble spending that much. I also have 4 place settings of black octagonal dishes (dinner, salad, bowl, plus wine glasses, and did have silverware) that I received as a shower gift. My china is Noritake Halifax and I use it for special occasions, as well as sometimes Bunco and Book Club. singlemom: Do you have a Kohl's card? If you do, they should be sending you a 30% off coupon (off your entire purchase) two or three times a year. Every time I want to make a more expensive purchase at Kohl's, I wait for one of those coupons. If a sale on the item and the 30% off coupon do not line up, I just wait until the next 30% off coupon comes out. HTH

This is sheer coincidence. I was in need of some every-day dishes very recently. I happened to be in (gag) WalMart picking up some printer ink and decided to stop by the houseware department. I found some dinnerware sets that I loved. The brand name is "Home Trends". You could probably find them at other stores too. (I think Target also carries the Home Trends dinnerware) They have tons of different color patterens/styles. A boxed 16 pc set came with 4 dinner plates, 4 side plates, 4 soup/salad bowls, and 4 large mugs. The cost was somewhere around $50. if I remember - I can't find the receipt. They also sold the pieces indivdually - (If you happen to want 5 or 6 place settings). The set I bought were really nice earth tones in a square rather than round plate. They're really nice looking. How do the WalMart dishes hold up? I asked because a lot of times the less expensive dishes will chip REALLY EASILY so they end up looking like hell in short order. I bought a cheaper line made by Mikasa (found on clearance) to tide me over until I could find a stoneware that I loved at a price that I was willing to pay. The cheaper line by Mikasa looked like hell by the time I found the stoneware because of all of the chips caused by day in and day out use. I just don't want to be that careful with my everyday dishes.

Corelle with thin blue stripes on the rims. Redecorated kitchen to black, red and gold. But haven't thought about replacing the dishes yet. My policy, get something cheap so you can afford to change every once in awhile. Also so you can afford lots of settings. Sell or give away the old cheap dishes. This is good advice for people who tend to "get tired" of what they have and love to shop for housewares, but I don't. I picked a high quality stoneware in a pattern that I really liked and will not get tired of quickly and I got it on closeout (including all the serving pieces). I'm pretty sure that this will be the last set of dishes that I buy because they are really durable. Thank goodness because the idea of having to shop for dishes has absolutely no appeal to me at all.

for those of you with incomplete sets, I found this site awhile back when I broke a couple of my discontinued pattern pieces. I'd bought 9 of everything so I could still be okay breaking one. I've broken a couple more along the way though. www.replacements.com/Have you used this often? I looked up my pattern (Mikasa Chablis) and most of what they have are serving pieces and they are outrageously expensive. I'd pay a high price to replace a plate if not having it meant having to find a new set, but I don't think I'd pay those prices to replace serving pieces. Maybe my pattern is too old (or perhaps still too new) for there to be replacements for the basics available. I purposely bought 14 dinner plates and 24 salad plates (which we use for everyday eating) cuz the clearance sale was killer and I never wanted to have to shop for dishes ever again.

We might have the same stoneware. My screams "WE GOT MARRIED IN 1997." It is very loud. I've had to soundproof the cabinet.
I still love the dishes and they look great - just dated.

I like Corelle for everyday. I don't like the big heavy plates being loaded into the dishwasher. DH and I started out with an 8 piece set of Correlle we got as a wedding present (1987), it was white with grean and peach (can you say 1980s!) flowers. Then we had kids so some broke. She got us another set that is blue and green flowers (1990s). We just added to what we have. Then we inherited part of a set from SILs mother. So we have three diffferent patterns, probably a total of 15 plates in all. We also added some plain white smaller plates that we used as kid's plates - we went through a lot of those when kids were young.
We do have a stonewear set that is from our wedding that we use on holidays. I also have a complete china set that my mom gave me when her parents passed away and she inherited theirs. It is in the china cabinet in our dining room, basically collecting dust. We have never used it.

If anyone is on the fence about buying china or expensive plates - I encourage you to look in consignment shops. I saw 3 full and complete sets of dishes. One set was kinda fancy, one was nice, but dated, and the other one was nice and "classic" (or boring - hard to tell.) They had at least 8 place settings, and serving bowls and trays, etc. etc. I actually called my neice and asked if she wanted a full-on set of dishes. I bet if you kept an open mind about things, you could get high quality, nice stuff for about the same price as new, cheap crap from a well known national retailer.

Is Corelle that really thin stuff that feels kind of slick? I hate those! LOL.
I honestly could not tell you the make of my regular day to day dishes. They are a plain tan stoneware with black rims that somehow I ended up with after a breakup. He ended up with the better everyday dishes I had bought at pottery barn because they were huge and heavy and I didn't feel like moving them, so I took his old dishes we had boxed up in the basement. They are very old and I've been thinking about replacing them lately. I also have a set of plain red plates from Pier One that I use from time to time, especially around the holidays.
I have 2 sets of old fine china. One is Minton, the other is Lenox. Those were given to me by my mother, who inherited them from her mother and grandmother. I love one of them, and have actually been looking at that website (Replacements) to add a couple pieces.

Our "everyday" dishes are a really old (30+ years, had it since before I was married) set of white Buffalo China. They wear like iron - I've lost only 2-3 pieces to breakage over the years. I like them because you can dress the table around it with any color, style or holiday theme with linens, placemats, flowers, candles, seasonal bric-a-brac, etc. I have one set of dishes and probably a dozen or more sets of cloth napkins for every season and holiday. My wedding china is a pattern whose name I can't remember :-( but we only pull it out once a year.

I mean, I chose a discontinued pattern, I'm lucky I can find replacements at all.

I was the one that started the other thread on dishes. I just wanted a set of dishes that's mine and I'm happy to report that it came today!!! I got a set of 16 so that I can use it and break it and not worry about it. I think I also wanted to get a lot in a big bunch because my mother has dishes that she can't get the same color of (there are 3 different "whites" including ivory, white and tan). Although I bought sets and I'm thinking of selling the mugs on Ebay- I don't use mugs often, and there is a different mug that's in the set I like better.
Anyway. I'm super excited about these dishes. I may get the fancy china when I buy a house that could fit them, but I'm set for a good long time with everyday dishes. They're so cheery!

Our everyday dishes are Corelle. They're square with a pink and green floral pattern. I love them. I was shocked DH agreed to them, what with the pink in them, but he liked them. I went with Corelle because those things are practically indestructible.

I finally bought a new set of dishes last year. After researching and looking at many different patterns I settled on Mikasa Antique White. They go with any color table linens and can be dressed up or down. I bought them on Amazon after reading all of the good reviews. They are porcelain but are surprisingly strong, lighter than stoneware and survive my teenagers and dishwasher very well. Best of all I was able to box up the old dishes we had been using which were a wedding present from my DH's first marriage 30 years ago!

I went with Corelle because those things are practically indestructible. I my Corelle pieces. they fill in where my chosen pattern is lacking. my pattern is on the rim only, the food surface is pure white, my Corelle is the "Winter Frost White" pure white, so even if I tire of my chosen pattern and go get another one, it'll match. *I like the style of the plates/bowls, but can see myself tiring of the specific pattern eventually! I have to say, I've got a lot of white "staples" in my home. my family gives me grief for it, but it makes things really damn easy to change it up when I get bored! both my master and guest BRs are outfitted with crisp white sheets and comforters. I can change anything on the walls/curtains/wall paint/etc without having to shell out for bedding too - which can be ridiculously cost-prohibitive! sorry for the tangent. back to your regularly scheduled YM thread.

My Corelle is named Burgundy and is a tiny flower edge on winter white. I asked for it for Christmas about 1987 so my ISO and his mother each got me a service for 4. I went to the outlet store and stocked up on extra plates and serving pieces so had about 16 plates, I got a dozen or so winter white soup bowls to go with them. Now they are looking old little chips. I got some winter white with a small blue stripe from my mom so mix them.
I like a pattern named garden but we have it in the camper so don't want the same for the house. I will only use Corelle since it is light weight so I can pick up a stack at a time.

I am not into dishes AT ALL. I don't "entertain" so no use for any big, formal, matching set. I used to have a set of Corelle but I must've sold them when I moved. I honestly don't remember. Those of you looking for sets of formal china, check yard sales too. When I sold my house, there was a HUGE full set of matching china and flatware (didn't know the flatware was there til I had already sold the whole box, cheap). The prior owners of the house left it in the basement when I bought the house. It was a second marriage, so, I'm assuming the china was from the first marriage and just left there. It was ok, just not my thing...i am happy to buy a new 4 place setting set every 5 years or so when something new catches my eye at Target or Kohls, etc. I just sold my last set online. Right now I just have various odds and ends and it doesn't bother me at all. It's just me so I prefer to use paper plates half the time. And even when I have friends or family over, for the rare birthday, holiday, or cookout, we also use paper. We're just not "formal" people. My mom had a HUGE set of Pfalzgraf Yorktowne. We sent it to the auction and I don't think it sold for much more than 20 bucks. It was HUGE and cost a fortune new. I have a small set of china that my mom bought second hand somewhere. I've never used it. It was displayed for awhile in a hutch, but decided it took up too much storage space, so it's wrapped up in a box in the basement. If I need a particular type of dish, I'll grab something at the dollar store or a thrift store (have found some really cool stuff at thrift stores!).

Oh, and regarding the 30% off at Kohls...anytime they put out their 15, 20, and 30% off coupons, even if you don't get the 30% one, you can look up the code and use it online. I do this all the time if I want/need something from Kohls. There is almost always a free shipping code out at the same time.

I have Pfaltzgraff. The pattern is now retired and is called "Delicious". It is apples. I have far too many serving pieces (most never used). It looked terrific in my last kitchen, but now it's just boring. I even had 4 sets of glassware that matched, placemats, napkins, tea cups, and let's not forget the ceramic canisters.....oh my.
on edit: My china is by Royal Dalton. I received most of it as wedding gilfs almost 48 years ago. I haven't used it in years, it just sits in a cabinet above the fridge.
My goal by the end of the year is to go through every cabinet, drawer & closet in the house and eliminate things. The Royal Dalton just will get packed up and stored in the attic. If my DIL ever wants it, she can have it.
