"Japanese experts say that Fukushima is currently releasing up to 93 billion becquerels of radioactive cesium into the ocean each day.
How much radiation is that?
A quick calculation shows that Chernobyl released around ten thousand times more radioactive cesium each day during the reactor fire. But the Chernobyl fire only lasted 10 days … and the Fukushima release has been ongoing for more than 2 years so far.
Indeed, Fukushima has already spewed much more radioactive cesium and iodine 131 than Chernobyl. "
If Fukushima is releasing X cesium/day and Chernobyl released 10,000 X cesium/day over 10 days. Fukushima will equal Chernobyl in 273 years.
Can you clarify that for me?
This was off of the washingtonblog site. Apparently somebody else is asking the same question regarding the false claim that Fukushima exceeds Chernobyl in toxicity....Looks like somebody else can do math too....
Then again, this person is probably not a chemist. We've already been told that math skills are unimportant in the chemistry field out here...

remember you asked me to compare them. I would laugh but your comprehension and memory are failing. That is nothing to laugh about! FrankQ, The answer is Thorium!! more power and less lethal!! Shorter 1/2 life.. Talking about half-life..most of the destroyed Units who were destroyed were totally post their usefull life and should have been replaced.. Now how long does it take to reduce this toxic land to use again Try Thorium study now we are talking Rare Earth rather then death.. Just a thought, BiMetalAuPt An Odd Thought: Thorium Reactors Would Make Tantalum And Rare Earths CheaperA new reactor design has been announced, a molten salt one. In the discussions about it here the subject of thorium reactors comes up. And thorium reactors are indeed a very good idea and they do work. But it occurs to me that one of the effects of the adoption of thorium technology would be to make a series of other metals, like tantalum and the rare earths, rather cheaper. Apologies, this is a little complex and comes from putting two plus two together as a result of something I’m doing in the day job at present. When you go prospecting for minerals there are, of course, a number of elements that increase the value of whatever it is that you’ve found. Bits of gold add value to almost anything, high indium values increase the worth of zinc ore and so on. But there are also elements which reduce the value of what you find. And one of the biggest bugbears for the mining industry is thorium. The problem being that it’s not really used for anything. The total US annual consumption is about $400,000 worth a year for example. Maybe 4 tonnes or so. Worse, a lot of that value isn’t actually in the metal at all: it’s in the cost of the paperwork to move radioactive materials around. The one and only time I’ve ever shipped thorium to someone the metal itself was given to me for free: the $27,000 paid on getting the paperwork done was the real cost of the transaction.

I'm curious. How long are these "mine is bigger than yours" discussions going to last? What does knowing we're being irradiated from any number of sources, man-made and natural do for us? What does knowing the jobless number is going up, the economy is going down, the price of gold futures is headed to 900, the Feds are printing money at an exorbitant rate, a solar flare is going to cook us, a sinkhole will open under out house and swallow us up, etc., etc., etc.??!!!
All I see posted are problems, most of which we personally have no control over. Never any mentions of how this information is useful for us, nor solutions we can implement or personnally can get involved in. Only problems, no solutions or useful information that benefits the human race, as sorry as it is. Sorry folks, after the events of this week, I'm done reading anymore of these tit for tat, infantile posts.

"According to a Professor at Stanford, there were some metrological effects involved and that "81 percent of all the emissions were deposited over the ocean" instead of mainly being spread inland.[27] Although they say levels are low, Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have shown that there has been an increase in radiation along the west coast of North America. Berkeley researchers measured San Francisco's rainwater radiation levels and found that "San Francisco rain water radiation levels exceeded federal drinking water thresholds by as much as 181 times recently." The rainwater is falling on crops and "being ingested in cows, which have begun passing it through into their milk and radioactivity has been detected." Here is an interesting bit of sequester news concerning air traffic controllers, who are not, by the way, getting laid off......somebody's got some 'spainin to do..... From Forbes, with some airline execs thrown in: www.forbes.com/sites/paulroderickgregory/2013/03/25/sequester-scaremongers-caught-red-handed-on-air-controller-cuts/An excerpt: Two airline officials, who wouldn’t be named, outed the sequester scare mongers in interviews with the Wall Street Journal (Airlines Dispute Planned Air-Controller Cuts).
They maintain that the FAA is making fliers political pawns, as the Obama administration looks to use public backlash over flight delays to force Republicans into a budget deal.
The sequester scaremongers, by focusing attention on how our federal government is run, may in the end convince tax payers that we are paying too much for the limited services we get in return. This would be the giant backfire of all time.

Just delayed! That patience thing you really need some help with! WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced today that it will delay the closures of all 149 federal contract air traffic control towers until June 15. Last month, the FAA announced it would eliminate funding for these towers as part of the agency’s required $637 million budget cuts under sequestration. www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=14474

Just delayed! That patience thing you really need some help with!Ok. When you're done breathing into the bag, go back and actually read the Forbes article, then, watch ALL the news broadcasts. Nobody's getting fired..... The strategy is to get people worked up....like you do... to make a case for negotiation. The FACT is, the Federal Government wants you to think this is a big deal, because if it turns out to be nothing, AS IT HAS (as noted by various small business owners associations) the citizenry is going to wonder how much dough the government can REALY do without.... I thought you conspiracy types didn't believe anything the government said....... Oh....And start READING the sources you cite.....: Among the changes we are considering are furloughing the vast majority of our 47,000 employees for approximately one day per pay period; closing over 100 air traffic control facilities; eliminating the overnight shift at over 60 facilities; and reducing preventive maintenance and support for all air traffic control equipment. All of these changes will be finalized as to scope and details through collaborative discussions with our users and our unions.
We will begin furloughs and start facility shut-downs in April. You can read more about this process in this letter from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Michael Huerta (PDF).A day off per month is not a layoff, is not a firing, is nothing but a...day off a month....Actually, there appears to be some lost overtime....especially for the "overnight" shifts... Here's something from the BLS.....you are a big fan of these guys right? Why don't you READ IT. The median pay for a controller was over $108,000......in 2010! I don't think we'll be scheduling any bake sales for them because they have to take a "political" day off every month...... www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/air-traffic-controllers.htm

Mine was from the first of April , things have changed. Try to keep current and up to date . Keep trying. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. As for your BLS report. It shows them losing a few hundred .

As for your BLS report. It shows them losing a few hundred .2010 Median Pay $108,040 per year $51.94 per hour Entry-Level Education Associate’s degree Work Experience in a Related Occupation None On-the-job Training Long-term on-the-job training Number of Jobs, 2010 27,000 Job Outlook, 2010-20 -3% (Decline moderately) Employment Change, 2010-20 -800
You mean that few hundred? That projection of employment losses starting in 2010? Three years before sequestration? Dude, that was a projection by the BLS used to show the opportunities in the business, not something that shows they're firing anybody. Nor does your info indicate any job losses as I have stated. You know very little of what you speak and you make up what you don't know. That's because you don't read, or you don't understand the material. You and your buddy really enjoy seeing yourselves talk regardless of accuracy. The problem is, every time you say something you run the risk of sounding foolish. If you guys devoted half the energy on actually researching stuff using real sources as you do reading stuff from the Flat Earth Society, you would be better at investing. "Among the changes we are considering are furloughing the vast majority of our 47,000 employees for approximately one day per pay period;
From your source. No job losses that I can see. Same statement as from my source. Here, in it's entirety, is the info from your quoted source. Please show us where the firings are stated, how many, and where. Thanks.: WASHINGTON – The U.S.
This additional time will allow the agency to attempt to resolve multiple legal challenges to the closure decisions. As part of the tower closure implementation process, the agency continues to consult with airports and operators and review appropriate risk mitigations. Extending the transition deadline will give the FAA and airports more time to execute the changes to the National Airspace System.
“This has been a complex process and we need to get this right,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Safety is our top priority. We will use this additional time to make sure communities and pilots understand the changes at their local airports.”
As of today, approximately 50 airport authorities and other stakeholders have indicated they may join the FAA’s non-Federal Contract Tower program and fund the tower operations themselves. This additional time will allow the FAA to help facilitate that transition.
“We will continue our outreach to the user community to answer any questions and address their concerns about these tower closures,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.
On March 22, the FAA announced that it would stop federal funding for 149 contract towers across the country. A phased, four-week closure process was scheduled to begin this Sunday, April 7. That phased closure process will no longer occur. Instead, the FAA will stop funding all 149 towers on June 15 and will close the facilities unless the airports decide to continue operations as a nonfederal contract tower.Keep believing that a 2% cut spending will result in MILLIONS of jobs and you're destined to fail. We told you years ago that the markets would be back, but you guys believed it was the end of the world. Had you listened, you would have recovered the money you lost in your 401K and would have profited nicely. You didn't listen and now you'll have to work several more years before you retire, if ever. Don't feel bad, WalMart is always looking for guys like you to shag carts and greet shoppers. At this point, I'm going to let you talk mainly to yourself because it's pointless to show you any information counter to your skewed view. If it makes you happy, I'll concede to you that it's the end of the world, we're all going to die from Fukushima radiation as you've said, millions will lose their jobs through sequestration as you've said, total economic collapse. There. Are you happy now? In the meantime, the rest of us will continue to earn from our investments and try to survive in this "harsh" new world.

Not really concerned with myself , but since this is an ongoing problem that will effect millions later than sooner. Your right why worry? Some sunshine i guess would be that .... "The workers make a 100 dollars a day" for the next 40-50 years. I see some real growth in Japan's economy. I hear the fishing close by the plant is excellent. Sell you a few pounds of sea bass? "Radiation levels within three of the reactor buildings at the Fukushima Nuclear plant in Japan are still too high for people to start decommissioning the reactors, two years on from the second-worst nuclear disaster in history. Scientists still do not have a firm understanding of the precise conditions of the reactor cores in three of the six units at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, and are resorting to using remote-controlled vehicles to get inside the tangle of wires, pipes and rubbles that has lain untouched since the tsunami tore through the facility." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/9913146/Inside-Fukushima-two-years-on-radiation-levels-too-high-to-enter-reactors.html

wxyz, I agree. You remember that movie Monsters, Inc where the power company frightens young people and uses their fear to generate power? I feel like we're living that movie where everything is geared towards generating more fear, dismay, doom and gloom to feed some entity that feeds off peoples negative, fearful emotions. Positive thoughts, attitudes, and actions are quickly beat down as they're a threat to the "good" of the beast. Where the hell is Boo when ya need her, eh? Ya know what? The sun will keep coming up until it doesn't and I'll keep waking up until I don't. Until then live each day like it's your last; love everyone around you; and go out and smell the roses.

Not bad for a Walmart guy. Really? Which REIT is that? Can you be more specific? I'm sure lots of people would like some specific info on said investment, even though it's probably B.S. Interesting, because REITs are so commercially biased on average, and you insist that jobs are leaving, the economy is failing, businesses are failing, people aren't buying anything, the currency is worthless, etc..That's ok though, because once everybody sees how much of a bullshit artist you are, you can just change your user name again and come back......and we'll pretend to let you think your fooling us.... The only people getting crushed these days are the paper holders. Then europe. If you had physical before the end of 2003 . Your still up huge. Oh......must be one of those inverse ETF gold REITs.................
