Has anyone tried Insanity? Did you have to modify the workout to accomodate "broken-ness" or "getting old-ness"? What were your results? I'm thining about investing in it rather than P90X because of there being no need for additional equipment.

I have a friend who is a trainer who highly recommends insanity and says it is easily adaptable to different skill levels, but I honestly am not willing to put out the money on it. I have a mish mosh of much less expensive stuff. For the price of Insanity or P90 X I could replace of my current equipment and DVDs with money to spare. And have a fully functional home gym.

I have been doing Jillian's 30-day shred, and I am really happy with the results. For $7 at Walmart, it was worth it. Maybe you could start with that, and then go on to Insanity if you can stick with JM for 30 days? It would be a much cheaper way to try it out, and the workouts are supposedly similar.

Really, Sam814? And here I've been dancing along with Richard Simmons and his hot pink sparkly short shorts all this time...maybe it *is* time for a change! I'd go the DVD route myself - so Jillian's 30 day shred, eh? I've avoided most of the biggest loser related stuff, but maybe it's time to look into it! How annoying is she to listen to at 5am, out of curiosity?

I find Jillian quite annoying! It is a good workout though. If you have On Demand it normally has 30 day shred.

Oh, she's annoying all right. I LOVE the punching exercise. I line myself up with the TV so it looks like I am punching her in the head But honestly, I don't find her personality that grating. And the workouts are great. With the DVD you can get a 30-day trial to her online site with diet plans and forums, but we are doing eMeals low-fat plan (which is coming out to 400-600 calories per meal), and that seems to be working well for both of us.

Thanks for the 30 day shred recomendation. I was just thinking I wanted a DVD Excercise to supplement my local gym workouts.
It is 9.99 at Target which is 2 blocks from work and close to home. Sigh. I guess I will have to make a trip to Wal-Mart this weekend. I really don't like Wally World.

Jellybean - I bought it online from WM. It was cheaper there than in the store, even with the $.97 shipping. I don't shop at WM in the store. Ever. Too bad for my mental health

I just got a workout from a trainer on base so I'm going to try that and see how well I stick to it. I do metrics and measures at my gym so that I can see how much lean body mass I have and how much fat % etc. I just need to up my cardio to get rid of the excess body fat that I gained last summer. Stressful situations make me turn to jelly beans and cappucinos and I had six weeks of stress which added up to about 2000 extra calories a day which added up to about ten pounds. I've been weight training at my Punch gym, which builds muscle. I just need to lean down. If I get bored with this workout, I will have to take a look at the Jillian video. Thanks.

DH & I just finished P90X. In all reality DH should have started with Power 90 than moved on to P90X. Yes you can modify any workout (DH did a lot of modifying, because he wasn't in condition to do P90X) but you don't get the same results. P90X, P90X2 and Insanity (which we also have) are meant for athletes and are not weight loss plans. DH did it for weight loss and he did lose inches but gained weight. We did P90X with resistance bands and a pull-up bar (total investment in equipment $40). Also you won't get anywhere near the P90X results without following the diet plan, which is a killer!!!

Good point and karma for you mthistory! I love my friends who are trainers- but some of them don't always take into account who those workouts are truly designed for. I can't modify the workout I usually do when I am at my normal weight and fitness level for the weight and fitness level I am right now- there is no way I can do Insanity or P90X. And I am not interested in their diet. I follow a diet that I know works and is safe for me.

Considering the level of cardio that I was(n't) doing, I've seen improvements just by adding more jogging into my routine. I'm glad I didn't spend $100+ on something that would be a paperweight after one or two workouts.

What is a good ab work out for spot reducing? I do cardio treadmill , elliptical and outside cycling. I have been starting to do some crunches and situps. I would really like to spot reduce the abdomen because after 3 kids, i need that! And, i want to incorporate exercises that really do the job. Otherwise, i wind up doing a lot of other exercises that take a lot of time when i really could plan better. So, any suggestions would be great.

OK. I will check it out. I think exercising smart is the key. You can spend a lot of time doing the wrong exercises and not getting the right benefit.

Are there any Pilates videos you recommend? Or just look up the exercises on line and do those?

shooby- There are reputable, inexpensive DVDs you can buy on Pilates- but I would check some out from your local library first. Certain yoga poses also work the core.

I've done insanity. I've been jumping around my living room since the 80's. I'm underwhelmed by the entire genre.

Until you get the Pilates videos, you can do different types of crunches: bicycles, scissors, elbow to opposite knee; planks will also help with the core. A good plank is one in which you don't bow or arch your back...and hold for as long as possible; start on your forearms. When that becomes too easy, move to your hands i.e. pushup position. When that becomes too easy, alternate between the two without twisting your hips.

If you have an smart phone or iPad, check out a free app called daily yoga for abs, or something like that- it has a yoga instructor doing a series of yoga moves that target the abs, and it changes daily. I really need to start doing this at work, when the kids go to lunch. Just make sure my door is locked...
