Occassional lurker since MSN days, new poster.
Would like help on making peace with spending savings when that long awaited "RAINY DAY" arrives.
Financially conservative background/family- now have total responsibility for 81 y/o father who requires 24 hour care. Financially able to keep him home as long as is necessary/possible and have wonderful hired help.
Problem is spending savings. This is what we all save for and yet I feel as if it should not be necessary ever to remove/transfer money from savings/investments.
Anyone else ever done this? Any advice?

Is this savings earmarked for something specific? A big family trip? An anniversary cruise? A new house? A baby?
Or is it earmarked for emergencies?
Since you say "rainy day" I presume you mean an emergency- in which case you should not feel guilty- you should feel proud- this is the whole reason people save money. To keep from getting into a mess. There will be times that you HAVE to take out of your savings. When you need that emergency repair done for instance.
Something else to consider- as I am a caregiver as well- do you have a bit of "mad money" or fun money earmarked for yourself? Whether you get your nails done, sip a latte, go out for Chinese with a friend, go to a caretakers support group, catch an exercise class- make sure you make time for you at least once a week. Even though you have hired help- you still have stress as the person managing Dad's care and finances. And that can take a toll on you. Which affects how you handle yours.

Bear - lol as that is my nick name too - sarah-bear or miss bear - we bears must unite!
Anyway, very good point - I have been neglecting myself and personal time. Definitely need to get out more and will see what I can start doing for myself. Need to go hang out with my bff's and such. Will let you know what I set up.
Funniest thing is by profession I am a medical social worker but the personal parts of this are no easier.
