I have been listening to sports radio this morning and to be honest, I think they give QB's too much hype. I think Ben Roethlisberger a good QB, but how can anybody say he led the Steelers to the Superbowl? It would be more true to say that their RB ran them to the Superbowl, kind of the same way Emmet Smith carried Troy Aikman. I am not trying to disrespect the guy, or his talent, just saying that sometimes it seems like QB's get far too much credit when they are surrounded by a great team.

...agreed... if we lose Troy to the IR, rather than Ben, it's more of a deficit... and that, my friends, is a big weakness... ...the Eagles, however, need to give Vick a cookie or two... no doubt about it...

Always. RBs and WRs also get way too much credit. So do DBs. 90% of the game, IMHO, is won on the line. No holes opening up? No running game. No protection for the QB? No passing game. Same thing on defense -- no pressure and the DBs'll get lit up. They don't stuff the run? DBs won't get an opportunity to shine.

The flip side is true, too...people are too quick to blame the QB for losses, as well.
I'm still reeling from the Bears' loss yesterday, and right now I'm not too happy with Jay Cutler...but for the past two years people have been placing a lot of blame on him for the Bears' struggles despite the fact that the subpar offensive line and to some extent the receivers are a big weakness. I lost some respect for him yesterday (even if he really was too hurt to go back into the game, he could at least have tried to help coach and encourage the backups rather than sitting on the bench sulking), but it's undeniable that with a decent offensive line he'd have looked a lot better than he did for much of the year.
I also think the criticism he takes for throwing interceptions is partially unfair because it's clear to me from watching the games that some of them were poor route-running on the part of the receivers or just poor catching. I can think of at least a couple that bounced off a receiver's hands and into the hands of a defender...can't really blame the QB there.

Maybe, but you don't buy a house with a messed up foundation, no matter how sparkly the kitchen is. Interesting analogy, but you could also argue that having a good QB on a bad team could be like a fixer-upper. You buy the house first and then work on the upgrades you want afterwards.

There is no denying the importance of the quarterback to a football team. However, just like with any leadership position, when the team fails he will get blamed and when the team succeeds, he will get most of the credit.

Sometimes, but in general they are the single most important player on the team.
They sometimes take too much blame for too, they pretty much have every thrown ball that gets turned over counted against them, just last weekend saw a receiver let a ball go right through his hands, ended up as an interception.
