I didn't read the article - I don't have to. There's far too many cases in the news of people who don't have the means [or the heart] to care for one animal, let alone a houseful. Most times these animals also aren't spayed or neutered, so they inter-breed, creating offspring with serious health issues. They should be charged with animal cruelty, neglect and abuse and receive the maximum fine/jail sentence for each animal that lost its life.

I haven't read it yet either, but my dad used to sell foreclosed houses and would pay my younger brother to do the cleanup on them (what he could without special equipment). I don't remember them ever finding live animals, but many, many dead ones

Snippets from the article for those who won't click on the link. Police Chief Dennis Taylor said he found 15 to 20 dead cats and two dead dogs at the home Friday, and obtained a search warrant for the residence.
The house had been owned by a 65-year-old woman who lived there with her 36-year-old son, Taylor said. Fannie Mae foreclosed on it in October, and the property manager sent the locksmith to change the locks on Friday.
Though the home was abandoned, the son returned occasionally. It wasn't immediately clear when he was last at the home, the chief told The Associated Press. Its really sad when people refuse to be bothered and won't at least call an animal shelter. Obviously one or more of them were animal hoarders.

Stories like this keep me up at night. I can't even imagine what these poor babies went through. And I agree with TD, Rick and Beemer. People make me sick and I feel there should be harsher consequences for this kind of behavior.

Or the 65 year old is dead and the 35 year old is in jail. It's a shame they didn't find new homes for the animals before things got to this sad point. The article said the son returned occasionally.

Unfortunately, many shelters and rescue agencies across the country are filled to capacity right now.

the boardwalk was infested with thousands of cats
A college I attended was like that. There were always cats around, but at night the campus was literally crawling with them. There was a group of people that fed and tried to rescue them, but most were completely feral. I dawned on me then that what needs to be made available for situations like this is pet food that contains birth control medication.

We had a situation just like this develop in one of the local housing projects. Thousands of feral cats infested the projects and the solution was to try to close off the places where they lived or kill them. Unfortunately, when you kill cats, others take over their territories. Birth control is more humane. Then too, better cats than rats... During the time that I lived in Texas, they had a program there to capture, fix, and release feral cats. It was underfunded, but it did drastically cut down on the number of new ones created. So sad, and in no way the fault of the animals.

kristi - That is a great program! Here it's called catch and release. DH and I do that in our neighborhood along with another neighbor/friend. I wish more people would volunteer to do this in their neighborhoods, that can afford it. I love your avatar! <<exalts kristi>>

POM - thanks! I got you back.
The only kitty I ever managed to catch and get fixed still lives with us. I don't think that there is a similar program here in Missouri, but we have a lot fewer feral cats. Maybe it is too cold?

Kristi, Thank you! Yes, I keep mine. I can't help it. When I look into their precious eyes I'm a goner. My male that we've recently fixed, etc. has never been litter box trained and I have to let him out. I hate that. I now tell him "Look, Buddy! I just dropped $300 bucks on you so you better be safer than usual!". LOL!! We have four now, but we've had 7 a few years ago. The elders have passed. My girlfriend is highly allergic and they can't be in her house. She has to wear a mask when in homes of pet owners it's so bad. She has about 10 living in her backyard. She has a kitty community out there for them. And they've all been fixed and have their rabies shots. Either it's too cold or they just go deeper in the woods where you live. They are very resilient, that's for sure.

The only kitty I ever managed to catch and get fixed still lives with us.We got our Ollie when he was abandoned at my wife's former office by his mother when he was about one day old. Eye-dropper feeding was a royal PITA, but we got rewarded with a gorgeous cat.

I love your avatar! <<exalts kristi>> We have a clinic here in town where feral cats can be spayed or neutered for $25 along with receiving a free rabies shot. I have gotten about 35 cats spayed or neutered. About 20 of them live in my garage or back yard and get two meals a day and year-round shelter (with heat during the winter). They have a good life although shorter than an indoor cat.

When we were in Turkey, there were tons of feral cats there too. I noticed that many of them had a clipped ear, so asked a shop owner (who had one as his assistant) what the ear clipping meant. He said that they had been neutered.
So a couple of years ago, a couple of feral cats showed up on my boss's deck. His wife managed to catch them both and take them in for shots and to be neutered. The male, which they thought had an injured ear that had healed, had already been neutered but the female (which had recently had a litter of kittens that they didn't manage to catch) got snipped.
Ollie's beautiful, Maddawgwiccan!
