i was reading a thread on another mb discussing vegetarian/vegan diets vs those that eat meat...a lot of opinions on both sides, health, animal cruelty...it got me curious as to just how many people watch/restrict what they eat...i eat meat but chose not to eat certain things...how about you?

We eat what we want, but as a rule I don't buy beef regularly. DH has a family history of medical problems, so we restrict beef to about 1-2 times a month.

I try to limit the amount of HFCS and sodium we consume. I try to make our dinners healthy and with whole ingrediants. I am a label reader and I don't like stuff full of chemicals and preservatives. I try to eat as natural as possible.
Having said that, I am not against having some yummy desserts. I like homemade desserts though...not stuff like Hostess Cupcakes or Twinkies.

I have been a vegetarian for about 4 years now. (not vegan) It started when I was feeling very sick and had a lot of test done. The doctor told me she thought a lot of my symptoms might reduce if I increased my soy intake. So I started including things like soy milk and Soy based burgers and the like to my diet. While eating all this there wasn't much room for meat so I just dropped meat from my diet. Could never be a vegan. I love cheese to much. Plus it requires way to much label reading.

I am an omnivore and my diet reflects that. I generally avoid packaged foods. I serve meats, vegetables and starches at practically every meal. My family is svelte and fit. I'm a tad overweight because I've suffered a few injuries and I work in a bakery and eat delicious, made from scratch, unhealthy food every day, as well as all the good stuff. Until I was in my 40's and my metabolism slowed down, this didn't seem to matter.
When I set my mind to losing the weight, it isn't about dieting, it's about lifestyle changes. There will be no restrictions on what I can eat. Just a matter of eating less of it.

Gluten intolerant, so I eat mostly veggies, fruit, meat, good saturated fat (avocados, nuts, animal fat from grassfed sources, eggs), cheese, yogurt. The occasional chocolate or gluten dessert. I concentrate mostly on whole foods, right now I'm trying a raw food diet (except for eggs and meat, I cook those). I try to limit my sugars to those in fruit or honey. Often I'm too lazy to try the gluten free substitutes. They're a pain in the butt in my opinion and not worth it since I work full time. But I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything or that I'm starving myself because I eat until I'm full and I don't eat again until I am hungry.

I had never seen road kill before...I saw it, and to drive your car around something already killed- it's very disturbing to every electron in my being. I feel bad for all those little animals hit by cars especially in spring.

I eat lots of stuff. I try to avoid processed foods more and more nowadays. I try to limit my meat and dairy until dinner time and later.

I had never seen road kill before...I saw it, and to drive your car around something already killed- it's very disturbing to every electron in my being. I feel bad for all those little animals hit by cars A cousin of mine, who lives in corn country, is on a county call list. When a deer is car-killed and while the meat is fresh & clean, they call people on the list. It's often in the night & bad weather, so they may have to call several on the list to get a responder. He keeps the equipment in the back of his pickup, takes two or three calls per yr, enough for his needs and a few friends. Benefits both parties - He gets good corn-fattened deer meat - the county gets free clean-up. I s'pose the losers are the eagles and the turkey buzzards? I grew up on a farm, so I'm OK with killing/butchering hogs, chickens, cattle, sheep - done it many times. But I have one exception - I've never liked the treatment that veal calves are given, so I don't eat veal. Question? - do PETA people know what would happen to domestic livestock if PETA won the debate worldwide? Extinction -growers don't keep cattle & hogs around for the companionship.

My food restrictions are only those I place on myself. I eat what I like, but try to remain active and keep my food choices fairly sensible (this hibernation weekend aside). I also made a few changes when I hit 40: more whole grains and fresh foods, added calcium (both dairy products as well as a supplement because osteoporosis is in the fam) as well as portion control. It probably helps that I dislike most condiments, dressings, sauces and dips - I know that sounds bland, but spices help keep things flavorful.
I rarely keep sweets in the house because they get stale before I get through them. I buy single serve ice cream or a candy bar when the craving hits. Snacks are usually nuts, cheese, yogurt, fruit, or cereal. When the boy first left for college I went through a period of eating a lot of processed frozen dinners and frozen pizza and packed on about 10 extra pounds ... and generally felt like crap. I've since adapted to a menu of sandwiches, leaner cuts of meat & poultry and lots of fresh produce through the week and a bit more elaborate meals on weekends. I lucked out with a naturally slender build, but have come to realize balanced nutrition is more than weighing in the healthy range. When my body feels fit and healthy, I feel happier overall. When I first started zumba classes I got a few comments questioning why was I there .... being slim isn't the same as being fit.
Fried foods are my particular weakness, I get my fix with bar food about once a month. As far as beverages go, I don't drink pop. Water (tap), coffee (black), a glass of juice or milk in the morning, an occasional glass of wine with dinner and a few good beers on the weekend and I'm set. I could easily drink half a gallon of OJ per day .... damn the person who deemed it empty calories.
No food allergies thank heavens, because I'm not much of a label reader. I've determined brands/products that I like and are reasonably nutritious and try to stick with them. I hate grocery shopping and don't want to spend more time at the store than I have to.

I've been a vegetarian (ovo-lacto, not vegan) for over 20 years, because I was very idealistic when I was a kid and never got out of the habit. DH, in contrast, is a total carnivore. At least we both agree we won't eat seafood!

I can't say I have any dietary restrictions on myself except I won't eat what I don't like. However, my wife had gastric bypass surgery, so now she has to be very careful about eating anything with sugar in it.
