Has anyone ever taken online classes from places like Penn Foster ONLINE College and actually got a job with the degree?

While in the A.F. my wife took some video courses. After passing them she was given college credit for them & did end up getting a degree. If she used that to apply for a job I'm pretty sure that nobody would ask her how she took the courses. I think some colleges do have programs where some courses can be taken at home & they apply those to your credits. As for taking the whole thing on line (or by mail) I have no clue. An employer just might ask about a college that he had never heard about.

It does not matter if the degree is online or not. What matters is if the college, and its programs, are accredited with the established accrediting bodies. There are 6 regional bodies by the Dept of Education which credential and accredit colleges. Middle States, New England Region, North Central, Northwest, Southern and Western. I have a close friend who got her MBA from University of Phoenix in healthcare mangement. She stepped into a very high paying administrative job for a large clinic system right after graduation. U of Phoenix is accredited by the North Central Association. These days, you must pursue a degree that is in demand. Not just get any fluff degree and hope for a job.

BTW her MBA was almost all online. She did have to go one weekend for initial consultation and orientation. Then a 2nd time for Capstone and her thesis review. Last time was for her graduation. Took her 5 years to complete part time, and she was only on campus 3 times for just a few, I think she said 5 or 6 days, total.

I've taken online classes through our state college system that counted for my degree, but never from one of the private, online only ones. They seem shady to me.

Online = Shady? It is whether or not they posess the correct accredation. Online or not. Unaccredited are usually diploma mills, online or brick and mortar. Colleges like Liberty University is one such brick and mortar was unaccredited. Opened in 1971, but not accredited until 1980.
Check for proper accreditation 1st. Online, or in person, classes do not matter for your degree. Transcript does not distinguish from online or in person class. At least mine do not from 2 different colleges.

My wife got both her BS and MBA through University of Phoenix on-line. The school is fully accredited and the degrees are recognized by her employer. She currently works as a Forensic Accountant.

Accreditation is the key. I recently looked into an online program for medical coding. Found several that were accredited by AHIMA, the primary accrediting organization for this type of job.

Accreditation is the key.
That it is. When my wife first started researching online schools, she found one that offered a BA degree in business for $1,500.00 and eighteen months. It sounded too good to be true to me, so I had her ask them what body, if any, they were accredited through. They admitted they weren't accredited. Not illegal, but not really ethical either.

My brother is currently a long haul truck driver and is currently taking classes online at Phoenix U also. Being on the road all the time, there is no way he would be able to attend a brick and mortar. My community college offers some of their classes online, and I am wholeheartedly grateful for that.

I've heard good things about Univerisity of phoenix... Problem is I can't afford it!

Not only the college, but also the program, must be accredited in some instances. Engineering, for example.
Very true, unless both the college AND the program are accredited, you really don't want to spend your money. Unless the program is accredited, your degree will not be considered in certain professions.
I know that the program I am in has spent a lot of time and money jumping through hoops to get their accreditation and when we were told of the repercussions of it not being accredited, it would have meant that none of the degree would be considered and my highest education would be considered that of the last accredited college.
Enginnering isn't the only program either. I don't know which ones are but Public Health must also be accredited.
