Fine, just don't use your tax-free religion to politically dictate or influence how I and others live! What you do inside your little tax-free churches is your business; outside the churches it becomes my business.
in a democracy(our world, "outside the church") the majority decides what it wants. if the majority decides that it agrees with a church's position, that position will win. if they decide that they disagree with a church's position, that position will lose. what is the fear of churches having position promoting opportunities?

steff,
the church didn't elect the politicians that you disagree with, or vote down a law that you wanted, the people did.

How can anyone really know what churches are doing with their money if they aren't at least subject to state/federal audits? I say audit them and tax them! From a person who obviously has never been a member of a church... Non-profits are also required to file a annual 990 with the IRS....at least any non-profit that I have been involved with any way.

Special Rules Limiting IRS Authority to Audit a Church Tax Inquiries and Examinations of Churches "Congress has imposed special limitations, found in section 7611 of the Internal Revenue Code, on how and when the IRS may conduct civil tax inquiries and examinations of churches. The IRS may only initiate a church tax inquiry if the Director, Exempt Organizations Examinations, reasonably believes, based on a written statement of the facts and circumstances, that the organization: (a) may not qualify for the exemption; or (b) may not be paying tax on unrelated business or other taxable activity." www.irs.gov/charities/churches/article/0,,id=179674,00.html You will also notice in those public notice of accounting (Financial Statements) that there is a usually an amount forwarded directly from the congregation to the main church to use for the betterment of the church as a whole.

It would be interesting: kill the tax exempt status then it also frees these Churches to campaign politically. Hmm...
