I know you say that you don't really like cardio.. but I started running at the end of July last year and I have to tell you, my entire body composition changed. I've retained lean muscle but have dropped a lot of body fat. And I was doing a ton of cardio before that.. spin classes, elliptical, stair climber, you name it... but as soon as I added running to my workouts I really dropped the weight and got lean. I hope so bc these pounds need to come off! I'm in week 2 of that couch to 5k deal. I do more running than it says to. I'm one of those sick people I don't love running but by the end of the 20 minutes when its time for cool down per the program, I could run a lot longer.

C, why not look into a conditioning program for boxers? They seem to have the best of both worlds, ripped bodies, endurance and speed. Frankly, they look a lot better than weight lifters. I did it in the past, here is the thing: I am not into the weight lifting for the looks, I am into it for lifting heavy ass weight lol. I have done 2 power lifting competition in the past and hope to keep on doing them in the future. Powerlifting is about lifting heavy ass weight, not looking good while doing it. I am perfect health per my last check up, so the weight loss is only to appease my wife; not for health purposes. While I want to cut, I will be doing it really slow because I really don't want to lose my strenght... So slow and steady to minimize the muscle/stregnth loss. As off last week, my max PR's: Squat: 495 x 5 Deadlift: 545 x 4 Bench : 315 x 6 I know my strength is going to suffer as I cut, but trying to keep it to a minimum.

Off to bed! Could not do back/chest since someone was using the machine (it is just one big total body workout equipment).
So instead did 90 Minutes on the elliptical at resistance 10 while watching some trash TV.
Good night folks!

C- when you train at a gym, how do you usually train (do you split days (sounds like you do since you had a chest / back day planned), do a total workout, or what have you?) and how often (how many times per week and how long per session)?
reason I am asking is I am thinking about trying the strong lifts program....but I am skeptical as it seems really simple and you don't really do things like bicep curls...but I wonder if I am currently overtraining, so I am considering something different
if you don't mind let me know what you usually do?

Currently I am doing Legs/abs and Back/chest with high reps/low weight since I don't have access to an actual gym. I cannot work shoulders/biceps or triceps since the hotel gym is not equipped for that. My goal is when I find a real gym to go to: Day 1 - Chest / Triceps (Power) Day 2 - Back / Biceps(light) Day 3 - Legs / shoulders(power) Day 4 - Rest Day 5 - Chest / Triceps(light) Day 6 - Back / Biceps (Power) Day 7 - Legs / Shoulders (light) Day 8 - Rest Wash and repeat. I like this program since it stimulate muscle hypertrophy. On power days I lift as much as I can in a 4-8 reps; while on light day is the most rep as I can but with lower weights... Between 15-30 reps. So on legs heavy days I will start with 225, 315, 365, 405, 455 and do 4-8 reps. On light day I will stick with 185, 225 and do 12-25 reps. Same thing for every other excersice. I also focus more on power lifts: squats, deadlifts, hack squats, bench, bent over rows, etc. Because you do work your arms and abs doing those movements, and then I might 2-3 exercise that focus solely on biceps/triceps and arms. The other thing I am working on now is my Gripe since I do raw lifts. I am finding that while physically I can still push, my gripe tend to give up quicker.

cawiau, are you using any sort of app to track your progress--I know you are using the site, but it can be quicker sometimes with an offline app. Is there anything you're "allowed" to have when you're feeling hungry? I know for weight watchers there is a vegetable soup you can make that is allowed as a "freebie" when you are hungry. So...um...one day when I just wanted to see if "cawiau" meant something (honest)...i saw your before-the-before pics...I think your wife is just worried you may be backsliding and becoming too comfortable with your weight. Why have you picked up weight--are you exercising less or eating more? LOL, will the answer be a simple--"yes" (instead of one or the other).

Cawiau is my username for everything and I am always weired out when some website tell me it is already in use. It simple: first two letters of my first name, middle name and last name.
And no, not back sliding. My intentions were to bulk/add mass during winter time and my wife knew that. I guess she did not expect me to add that much.
Per my doctor I am all good and in great health. At my size I can still run a 5k, although it is more like at 4 miles / hour instead of my old 6.5. As for weigfht gain, I"ve been eating more (need that to add mass) and exercising the same if not harder. Just been cut to nothing with having to be in a hotel room those past 5 weeks or so.

wow- so almost each muscle twice a week (I realize you do 8 days, but still...)? no issues with that? back when I was intentionally gaining, I dropped cardio and did Day 1- Back /chest Day 2- rest Day 3- Bi / Tri / forearm/ and shoulders Day 4 rest Day 5- legs / abs Day 6 & 7 - rest each workout took about 60-70 minutes--heavy weights, low reps & the only cardio I did was walking my dog about an hour a day (which is about 2 miles a day the way my dog stops to sniff everywhere ) -------------------- when I started my cutting I went to my old program Day 1 - Bi / Tri / Forearm and run 4 miles Day 2 - Legs / Abs Day 3- Rest Day 4- Shoulders / run 4 miles Day 5- Back / run 3 miles Day 6- Chest / run 4 miles Day 7- rest each day of exercise above takes no more than 60 minutes, and kept same dog walking schedule but then that stagnated, and I added some more running and other trng and signed up for this crazy fitness challenge event to motivate me (How many pullups can you do? How many lace to the bar? How fast can you sprint 140 meters with 100 lbs on your back/ and then how fast can you run 4.6 miles? (3 minute break between each event) however now the event is finished and I feel like crap....so I am thinking about doing something different....

For MM the guy in front of me on treadmill had on a hat.
And I forgot they close at 7pm on weekends! The one back home is always open 24-7. So I got to do my cooldown walk at home around apt complex. I did get to 2 miles though.
That stupid alarm thing is obnoxious!

I am doing the spring house cleaning workout with a Mr. Clean sponge mop to wash the walls. I made great progress today and plan to finish tomorrow. Then the carpets get cleaned. I'll work on cutting down or organizing stuff in my closets then I'm done and out the door to the golf course and gym.

Heading out with some friends from work tonight. Limit 2 beers.
Rob base: seems like a pretty good split. So have you decided what you are doing next?

I can't run anymore because I damaged my left ankle pretty bad. (there's permanent damage, this isn't a new injury)
That's why P90X worked out so well for me. I went with their lean program . .. I really don't care if I build any bulk muscle, I just wanted to stay toned.

So have you decided what you are doing next? not sure what I will do next, still deciding, I am going easy until Thursday.....if I do the strong lifts, that involves squatting 3 times a week....not sure how squatting that much and running will mix? Cawiau- you don't have any issues working all your body parts twice in eight days?

Cawiau- you don't have any issues working all your body parts twice in eight days? You don't have to Squats all 3 times. You can do Leg Presses or Hack Squats (yes I know that still involve squatting lol), leg extensions / lunges, etc. The only important factor is that power day you go for your Max PR, not reps and on light day you rep till failure or 15-20 good reps. And so far I haven't had an issue but you need to do what is good for you. Keep me posted

I need to just suck it up and join the Y. Look for a planet fitness in your area. It can be as cheap as $9.99/month. I got the $19.99/month one to get tanning and visitors privileges. Yeah they have some dumb rules but none of them bother me. I have been every other day since I joined. Finally joining one made me stick to a routine. My apt one is packed after work. I've found PF's treadmills to be much nicer. The one I go to at home is open 24-7. The one here is open 24-7 during the week and 7am-7pm on weekends. I kept putting it off bc I said I didn't have the money. This one fits my budget. I know you'd like a pool and stuff but its something to consider if you can't squeeze the Y into your budget right now.

Carl- you know you can probably join a local gym for a week or something for a relatively low cost.......or you can pretend you already live in the area and talk them into a free a guest membership for you to "test" the gym out for a week or 2 while you decide if it is right for you or not.....

WVU, the closest Planet Fitness to me is like 10 miles north of me. I can make 1000 excuses why I can't seem to go. There is a Retro Fitness near me. The plan I'm looking at is $19.99/month for 12 months and a $100 sign-up fee. For just $15 more I can join the local Y.

I've seen them waived MM. I think my sign up was $29 and the yearly retention fee is $39.
Jen mine is probably that far but it is an easy trip after work. Takes me same amount of time as it takes me to get home. I just didn't find anything comparable price wise. If the Y is that cheap I'd join them. I wouldn't even know where a Y was here.
I waited forever to do it. I'm glad I skipped Fitness Evolution but I wish I'd done Planet Fitness sooner. Knowing that I am paying for it motivates me to go.

I haven't even gotten started yet! WVU, 10 miles is too far for me -- too easy to make excuses not to go. The Y is a 5 minute drive away and they have better facilities. We'll see what my raise does - you know, since I have no other big financial obligations...

Close is good. The closest thing to me is $70/month which is not happening. There are some 10 mile stretches around here that could be brutal. I drive 12 miles to work one way. I will say if I came home first I don't think it would happen. I know thats not an option for you.
Granted I wanted the visiting privileges for when I'm home and well I expected to be moving closer to the gym over the summer. Still may work out that way but not for the same reasons.
I waited forever saying I couldn't afford it. Turns out I can and joining has motivated me. I'm determined to make it a habit. Definitely not a top level gym but it works for me now.

I'm also starting school in the summer, so studying will take up 80% of my weekends. And that's when I'd look to hitting the gym. I guess the universe wants me to be fat. <<grabs pan of brownies>>

Well, I am not going to the gym. I am doing some bike riding and getting the ass and legs all toned up. Trying to cut back on snacking and fatty foods. Sticking to mostly chicken and veggies. It's hard to give up my sweets though.

I need another one of those red velvet cupcakes from Wegmans. Ah hell just give me that cream cheese icing. I did 2.32 miles and it is hot in the damn gym!
My breathing got messed up from someone's perfume/cologne at lunch. I was struggling but I pushed on and finished.
