So my Honda is now over 100,000 miles and I'm going to take it in for a check-up. Both my dad (who isn't huge on preventative maintaince) and DBF (who's a diesel mechanic) arne't being particularly helpful. DBF doesn't really have the time to change the belts for me.
So I'm going to take it to a shop (owned by a guy dad grew up with) to have it serviced. I know I should get the belts (serpentine & timing) changed and the transmission flushed, but is there anything else I should specifically have them do?
Tires are in good shape. Oil & filter changed regularly. The air filter is good to go. The car is handling fine and the alignment is good still. Breaks maybe? Fuel pump? Water pump?
I know most of what I know about cars from Dad, who's always bought beaters and took a 'replace it after it breaks' mentality.

I got my water pump replaced at the same time as my 100k (in my case 200k) checkup. I guess changing the timing belt or some belt on my car involves a lot of removing of parts, etc. and the water pump is in the same location, so it was cheaper (maybe $75 or $100 for the part - don't have my bill in front of me) to get my mechanic to replace it while he was in there then having to go through all that labor time again. I'm no expert, just my thoughts!

I took my Honda in with 100k miles to get the timing belt changed. They told me to come back in 20k miles.

Thanks for the replies. I'll ask the guy what he thinks as well. I'm sure he'd rather not screw me over because everyone knows everyone and he'd get tattled on if he was a moron.
The fuel filter does need to be done. Thanks Rick. I had been specifically wondering about the water pump. I've never had one changed until it broke and was a Major problem. So I guess I'll ask about it?

Ditto to considering Steph's water pump recommendation.
If you're planning to run your Honda to close to 200K miles, it's a pretty safe bet that you'll need to replace the water pump before you get rid of the car. On many engines, especially 4 cylinder engines, the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Much of the work in replacing a water pump is removing the timing belt covers (frequently a challenging, time consuming job in tight quarters). So why pay for removing and replacing the timing belt covers twice? Steph's $100 estimate for a water pump is what a water pump for my Camry cost, so it's right in the ball park. I'd guess that the labor to remove and replace the timing covers, etc. a second time would be worth about $100, and then you'd still have to replace a $100 water pump. Why pay about $600 - $700 to replace the timing belt and water pump in separate trips to the shop when you should be able to get the same things done for about $500 - $600 in a single trip?

I've had the timing belt replaced on my Honda twice. Has 120K miles on it and is a 1994 Civic. Water pump was done at same time as I was told they had to take out most of the same parts to get to water pump.

The major services on my Subaru are at 30,000 and 60,000 miles (the 60k is a bigger service) and then it just keeps repeating, 30, 60, 90, 120, etc. That doesn't include oil changes of course and timing belt changes are at every 105,000 miles which doesn't fall in the above intervals.

Congrats Carolinakat and welcome to the Honda 100k mile club my Honda Accord has 237k and I'm big on preventative maintenance. I've only had my timing belt and water pump done twice. The first one was done around 160k or 180k and the second was just this year, both done at Honda.

So apparently I have a timing chain instead of a belt, so the guy at the shop said it was no maintanince required, everything else is getting done later this week.
