Sometimes these people (regardless if they are a vetran or not) often are also alcoholics or drug addicts looking for quick cash for their next 'fix' and can turn violent in an instant. .

Well - yeah! They're not taking their pants off for me... Awwww, don't feel bad--I don't remember the last time a guy took his pants off for me. :-( But at least we can enjoy the view! Neither of you offered me candy!

I gave a couple bucks to one guy because he seemed sane, and best of all, he seemed to have a plan. Not that I really listened enough to figure out if it was a lie. But he told me he had been at a shelter and he thought he could do better on his own and what type of job he was going to be able to get. He also said he really wanted to spend the night at the Y, and told me how much it would cost for a night there, and tomorrow he could earn enough for tomorrow night. I actually confirmed that he had the correct amount for the night at the Y after I had given him a few bucks. I would like to think he is out there, somewhere, doing okay now.

You're not selfish. I'm pretty immune to the homeless and panhandlers any more and I'm pretty good at just ignoring them, no matter how much they may yell or scream. I used to have some favorites on campus when I was in college and I would give them a few bucks. There was the guy who would ask your name and then sing a song about you, that was cool. I really liked him; you could tell he was nuts, but he never got violent with people. There was also the lady who used to yell at you to get out of her car. She was definitely insane because she was sitting on a bench. I just admired her from afar, though. <<exalts Meghan>> Both of those were great stories! I LOL'd at the last one.

Not at all! And you should NEVER give a stranger a ride in your car. I wasn't going to give him a ride. But maybe I should have driven someplace and picked him up something and brought it back?

I might have done that if he hadn't been yelling and screaming. If he had said "I understand" or something to that effect when you said you didn't have any cash on you, I probably would've picked him up some food.

He didn't want food he wanted your CASH. Considering how angry he got at you coming back with food would probably have made things twenty times worse.
There are places he can go if he is really hungry. He doesn't need to be accosting women outside Kohl's for cash.
You are better off being safe rather than sorry. Too many people get hurt trying to be good people out of fear of what others might think of them.
Your life is worth more than a cup of soup.

Ok..I don't feel so bad. He really did scare me. I wasn't the only one though. The ladies in front of me at Customer Service said he did it to them too. Management did go out there to get rid of him, but I don't know if he left. He was still there when I left. I practically ran to my car and then quickly locked the doors when I got in.
I do feel bad for him. It is only 14 degrees out, but man...he was scary mean.

There used to be one outside a Sams Club. I always felt sorry for the manager in charge who had to go out and get screamed at by the guy accosting customers.

Looks like Tampa is FINALLY doing something about their panhandling problem. What a bunch of wussies to never do what the taxpayers want but always bowing to the bigmouths that don't have the crazies in their backyard.

Angel, sounds like you did the right thing. I had an unemployed friend of mine take another woman for lunch at McDonalds last year, but I think its because she talked to her first. The woman didn't really approach her and more important she wasn't scary and was a woman having a bad, hungry day.

You are not selfish. I rarely carry any cash either. besides the fact that it is my cash. I earned it. I'll do what I please with it. If you bully me you sure as heck won't get any of it. There are lots of resources that homeless can access. Some prefer not to. There are soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, and churches that are equipped to assist without them trying to bully and scare women.

i never give strangers cash.. years ago, there was a guy that always sat at the same highway off ramp. i gave him a loaf of bread, some peanut butter, etc.. i have no problem helping someone who may be legitimately hungry but i'm not going to give money for booze/cigs/drugs...

We all know that I am a liberal, but this guy seriously scared me Solution: Become a conservative. Carry a gun. Next time he does that pull out the gun & shoot him in the foot. He will: 1. Quit shouting at people. 2. Be real easy for the police to find because he will be the one with the limp. (Liberals make things so complicated)

There's a guy that's hangs around the store around the corner from my house, asking for change. He's always polite, but there's obviously something wrong with him. Sometimes he'll ask if he can pump your gas for you, once I was putting air in a tire and he asked if he could do it for me. Other times it's just "Miss, you got some change on you?" Everybody knows him and knows his name. I've given him change before, but not lately.
He's not scary, so it doesn't bother me. I told the story on YM I think, where he asked a lady for some change and she told him SHE needed 30 cents. He gave it to her with no problem, which I thought was hilarious. She gave him a dollar when she came out of the store.

On another note, a couple of months ago somebody robbed the guy and shot him in front of the same store where he asks for money. Really???

I'll buy a couple $5 McDonald's gift cards, keep them on me and give them to sane-looking people who need them occasionally... Haven't don't it in a while, but next time I go to McDonald's I might get a couple.

No, you aren't being selfish. I doubt he was really hungry, he just wanted the cash and he would approach the next person with the same story whether you gave him money or not. That's if he's not nuts.

That reminds me of a joke!!
Here is a little test that will help you decide whether you're a Republican, a Democrat ...
... or a Redneck.
You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, an terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges at you. You are carrying a Glock cal 40, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?
Democrat's Answer: Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor! Or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1 ? Why is this street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior. This is all so confusing! I need to discuss with some friends over a latte and try to come to a consensus.
Republican's Answer: Bang!
Redneck's Answer: Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Click.... (sounds of reloading) Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! click. Daughter: "Nice grouping, Daddy! Were those the Winchester Silver Tips or Hollow Points?" Son: "You got him, Pop! Can I shoot the next one?" Wife: "You are not taking that to the taxidermist
