... if you have one, don't want to or can not meet their new requirements and don't want to pay a monthly fee starting in February.
I just closed mine. I had opened it in Spring of last year because they had paid me $180 in cash to do so. I did use it, and was going to keep it, but of course not with a monthly fee.
Just thought I remind those who may have forgotten, or do not realize that they start charging a fee if certain (now more restrictive) criteria are not met.

Do you have a link to some article or source explaining what this is all about? I have not paid a checking account fee in, sheesh, 35 years...maybe more.

Yes please post a link. They've sent me so much crap lately that I just shred it.

My husband has their regular checking account and I saw the notice in the mail a few weeks ago I think. He uses direct deposit, so avoids the fee that way, but you better believe I'd close it in a heartbeat otherwise.

The option in the first column on the left offers completely free checking, as long as you do the following:
Minimum Deposit to Open $25 No Monthly Service Fee With five or more debit card purchases posted to your acct each statement period OR, with at least one direct deposit of $500 or more. Otherwise a $6 monthly Service Fee
Just have your paycheck deposited...no biggie here.

Just have your paycheck deposited...no biggie here. Or have $500 from your paycheck deposited there. My local bank did something similiar to what Chase is doing. I have a Checking and Savings account. I use to have a fixed amount deposited each paycheck to the savings account with the rest of the Paycheck direct deposited to a Different Bank's Checking Account. To keep this secondary Checking Account free - I just changed where the deposit goes... so now I move money from Checking to Savings instead of the other way around. I should just consolidate my banking... I keep these two accounts out of sentiment I think...

I just closed my Chase account at lunchtime. I had only opened it to get a bonus, and I lost the debit card months ago. I didn't need it as I already have checking/savings accounts at Bank of America. They started the fee already, so my checking account balance was $0.00. I closed the savings as well, I also have ING accounts.

I opened a checking account last year at Chase for the $125 they offered and used it for my personal spending account. They were OK, but not great enough for us to move all of our accounts there. When I got the notice about the fee, I went down, closed the account and opened one up at a credit union. No fees and I get interest. Having my pension check deposited there wasn't an option because I have it going to an investment account to avoid fees there.

I wouldn't jump the gun, if changing accounts is difficult for you. For me changing banks requires changing multiple automatic deposits and payments. Banks are going through a fee restructure due to recent regulation. There will be early adopters and late-comers, but the new normal will become obvious over time. Moving an account from an early adopter, to find a new bank or credit union that is just going to make the same change as soon as you have switched all of your auto transactions over, is way more work than it is worth. The only certainty is that consumer accounts are going to be more costly, how they become more costly is for the market to determine. Switching back and forth is futile.

I've banked with Chase for many years now and haven't had any problems with them. The direct deposit of my pension covers means I don't incur any fees. I also use my debit card for almost all purchases.
The minute they charge me, the account will be closed and I know it will be a hassle to change everything.
I do have a credit union account, but it doesn't pay interest on checking--only on savings. However, the interest rate on their credit card is much better than any other credit card I have investigated recently.

Wasn't Chase just bought out by Captial One?

uhh I wonder if this affects Wamu accts that are now Chase??? I haven't got any notice. My boss refuses to do direct deposit because his bank would charge him--very annoying if you ask me.

I then used it as a sort of side spending account, having $100 per month directed to it from my paycheck. Now that they want $500, it's too much. I do my main banking with a local small bank, and they have never even mentioned a fee. Everybody in there knows me and my wife, and we use a safe deposit box there for $35 per year. These people are just great. I will drop Chase in a heartbeat for these guys.

I like my Chase CCs, too. I have two . . . a Freedom and an Amazon. They also have my home mortgage, but that's because they purchased it or the rights to service it. Do we know which these days?
Anyway, I wouldn't bank with anyone who doesn't have a bricks/mortar building in my area. I'm not talking about savings. I love Emigrant and Ing. But I'd hate to think there was a snafu with my regular account that I couldn't go "talk" to someone about. I guess that's a Sourthern/small town thing.
I bank with Regions who bought AmSouth who I think used to be BTNB. (LOL). I can still use my AmSouth checks, which works for me.

I am planning on closing my Emigrant account and only keeping ING to make things a little easier. The two accounts seem to be redundant anyway.

I have a friend who works in customer service at BOA and he would agree that they are the devil.

I have a BOA gold account but they tried to charge a few. I talked to them and they reversed it and said they marked my account to never have a fee, it was a mistake. They seem to have done that to all the Gold accounts then had the best customers cancel accounts. I stopped my bills that took money from the account and stopped using the bill payer and set it all up on my other account. Now BOA is only a little so I could use the bank to deposit odd bits of money like I got a check from a refi and needed to deposit it, so did then transferred it out. If they try charging me again I am gone without looking back. I might need to cancel two credit cards too since I see them on the BOA website.

I am betting Chase won't charge me, last time they screwed with me I canceled one CC and re-fied a car. I left the checking and the other CC. Guess we will see its not like I don't already have several other checking accts else where but all of them involve difficulty depositing the paycheck since the boss is weird and computer unsavy.

Schildi, thanks for the reminder! DH and I had an account there along with our main household one. He closed the small one he used for cash, etc. to keep from being charged the monthly fee. Our main account reaches all requirements so we won't be charged anything. I'm keeping it with them because we have direct deposits already set up and we've had no problems with them.

We have a business account with chase that we no longer use, a personal account with an auto draw for our HELOC and the HELOC at chase. I kept our personal account open at Chase b/c of the auto draw and b/c I really prefer Chase's on line banking to the one I currently use. I checked the personal account this am, and no fees, no notices. I like Chase's Sat lobby hours (I think it is 3 pm now) and the fact that every time I ask for a prepaid Debit for a Gift I don't get charged anything. It has to do with the business account or the HELOC not sure which.
I do have two accounts that recently started charging fees, one of which will be closed. This is my reminder to get on it.
