No, this isn't really about money, but about looks, so I figured EE was a good place to put it. (You can read whatever you want into that. ) I'm getting ready to replace the refrigerator and possibly dishwasher in my house. The oven will probably need to be replaced within the next few years, but since I don't cook much it's not as high a priority at the moment. All are ~20-30 years old. I'm leaning towards black appliances, because they're cheaper, and this is NOT a high end kitchen. Nice birch cabinets, but ugly green laminate counters (on my wish-to-update list, at least a year down the line, and probably longer) and ugly light colored and stained linoleum (also on the list). Plus I already have a new black microwave, so I figured I'd stick with it. So my question is, how important is it for appliances to match? Do they even need to be the same brand, let alone in the same line? I know I don't pay attention to that kind of thing, but does anyone else, in a starter-level house and kitchen especially?

Just depends how froo froo you are...I really don't care if the appliances match or not as long as they are clean.

If by matching you mean that all the appliances be the same brand - there is absolutely no need to worry a second about that. You definitely need to make sure that they all match color-wise though.

If you aren't planning to sell the house then get what you like.

It's very important to me that they match. But I'm anal and very particular and it would bother me if they didn't match. I have had black appliances and they are gorgeous, but as MM stated - harder to keep clean. That's why I prefer white or bisque colored. Stainless shows finger prints and smudges and that would drive me crazy. I may still get them if my appliances start to act up, but it will drive me crazy. And if my refrigerator or stove went out I would replace everything if I changed the color scheme. I would also sell the working appliances and I have done that before and got a great return for them.

Mine don't match. My fridge is white, my dishwasher is black, my stove has a black oven door and a white top. Doesn't bother me.

ITBIC!!!! I spend a lot of time in the kitchen!!! Gotta keep my breakfast in bed skills up-to-date My ex didn't complain about it either (though she did want to redo the entire kitchen, which she never used....hmm.....)

LOL!!! You have a point. I must have been thinking about my DH who would only need an ice chest and a bbq to survive... Oh who am I kidding, he'd just do takeout 3 meals a day. He'd at least need a beer fridge or a kegerator.

I thought he was manly LOL!!! He puts ice in it.. so he's still uncouth enough to be manly... You should teach him to make ice cubes out of wine, so it doesn't get watered down....

You should teach him to make ice cubes out of wine, so it doesn't get watered down.... That is freaking genius!!! I'm so doing that this weekend! LOL Seriously.. I hadn't even thought of that. I guess just the idea of opening a bottle of wine and not pouring it into a glass and drinking it right away was a possibility. I'm sure you'll think of an appropriate way to thank me

Yeah, I thought about the dust issue too, after I bought the microwave. And since I'm not the world's best housekeeper, maybe I should look at bisque/almond instead. I don't think white would look right. The microwave isn't a built-in or anything, and I suppose I can just ignore that it won't match the other appliances. (My ex's house had a stainless dishwasher, oven, and cooktop, a white microwave, and a harvest gold fridge. I can live with the mismatch.) Then if/when I move, I can deal with it then. Thanks for the responses! :-)

There is something very classic about white appliances. We had them in our last house, and although I wouldn't have picked them out, they looked good and definitely helped to brighten up the room (didn't have a lot of natural light). Now we have black that is being phased to stainless. So far we've got two of each, and the two stainless that we've had to replace are different brands but their styles are similar enough that you wouldn't really realize they are different brands at first.
And to answer your question - no, I don't think they have to match. But I agree with other posters that the black appliances are a b!tch to keep from showing every freaking speck of dust and dirt.

Light isn't much of an issue; there's only a little natural light, but it's a very spacious area, and the cabinets are light wood (birch), so they don't darken the space any. Because the cabinets are so light, I just can't picture white appliances looking good. I thought about black for some contrast, but bisque is what's already there, so I don't even have to picture how that would look--I already know. And I know that they don't show the dust too much, since there's plenty on them.

I have completely different appliances. One is bisque, one is black and one is stainless. As they go I am replacing them. So no they don't match. I will say that you can't see my kitchen from the living room as it is at the back of the house. I also have no intention of selling anytime soon. If we were I would consider changing them to match for that reason. As far as cleaning. The black seems to be the hardest but it is the oven. I am not sure how much of that is simply the thing that gets the most schmutz on it anyway. The dishwasher is fake stainless. It looks like stainless but doesn't get any fingerprints on it. I really wanted black but this one was crazy cheap on sale. Everyone knows me and saving money. ;D

We've been in our home 22 years and so far have replaced the fridge and stove. The cabinets are some kind of beige, so those appliances match the cabinets, or as close as we could find. The dishwasher is still the original one, and it matches too. Now DW is going for a color contrast for the smaller appliances. She's bought a black toaster oven, coffee maker and can opener. Our microwave is coming up on 10 years old, so its replacement will be black too. Beige and black might sound a little odd, but it does all look good. Everything is a different brand, or as I like to say, they are from that French company; On Sale.
