How can a program that was deployed a decade ago designed to make sure that school children are proficient in reading and math be flawed?
I think some of the problem is due to counting the scores of disabled children that are unlikely to ever be able to test at grade level. Also testing children that don't speak English using English tests. I don't think the language thing would have a big impact on a school with few immigrants, but if you have a school that is largely non-English speaking that could really skew the scores. Especially if they are older when they enter so they are already behind and also don't speak English. They have the option to test in Spanish for their first three years in the country, but some states don't run the Spanish test.
My sister is a teacher and she feels a lot of pressure to teach to the test rather than teaching subjects more wholistically. At her grade level it is a state test rather than NCLB test. However listening to some of her stories about the other teachers I am kind of glad they have standardized tests to keep them on track.

NCLB was a failed concept from inception and should be eliminated immediately for all states. Unfortunately Obama has also used this one in his blame Bush game but as with most things there is some little facts that should be included. This was actually the brainchild of late Senator Kennedy and was the result of what everybody claims they want. Bipartisan action.

The government should stay out of education period as they have shown failure in health, savings and other areas. Thinking a few can manage millions of people in multiple different areas is just pushing personal agendas which more than likely won't create any good substantial results.

I agree education should be run by the states and not the feds. Unfortunately my state is no better run than the feds.

NCLB wasn't the problem. The Department of Education was. NCLB was designed for English and Math not all the other crap that they have put with it.
Children who are taught in our education system should have a proficient uderstanding of English and basic math when they graduate from High School.

And yet those are the students that we pay so much more to teach...sucking up resources that could be used to teach kids that may actually be producers someday.

yes, it was. it is over simplified crap that does not reward innovation, but in making both teacher and students into robots.

It was difficult for me to accept the idea that in America one can get a "waiver" about a law. Laws in this country apply to some and not to others. This is something that people who grew up abroad never expected to see. The President, like a king, decides to whom laws should apply.

The only Good thing about the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND was the title. It seemed like a noble idea and still is. The problem is that those crafting the bill must have had no concept in how to address the issue. The problem goes back to people who compiled the bill had little or no class room teaching experience. My wife taught many years and one of the problems were each year new rules or programs introduced and written by egg heads who had all kinds of degrees and went from college to an administration in education. They really had no concept of dealing with class room issues. Thus there were useless mandates written in the bill that would not work and very expensive. The idea is great but the bills outcome was counter productive in many areas. It seems that there are so many more children with learning issues today than when I was in school. Don't know the reasons but it does need to be addressed effectively but how is the big question. The current NCLB is not cutting it.

... It seems that there are so many more children with learning issues today than when I was in school. ... The change is that they are being identified.

It's the Chicago way, they did it with Healthcare too, it's called Waivers for Votes.
It seems to work with some demographics......

I think a major change in identifying students is that more Learning Disabled labels are given.
Do you know the criteria for a learning disability? An average or above average IQ, and achievement which is below what would be expected of a child with an average or above average IQ... (achievment not comensurate with ability...)
Now... to my way of thinking... if a child is not achieving what might be expected... the thing to do is look at the environment... the home and the school... including the methods being used... (and the developmental appropriateness of the expectations... etc.) ...
But no... we label the kid deficient....

Yes i think that labels are to harsh,, and for that matter so are grades........ A child gets so much of his/her/its self image from how they stack up vs others,,,,,in sports he may be a third stringer which affects his self image.....In class he may get a D which makes him feel bad..........And I think that that is just wrong all children should feel good about themselves..........
Cough cough...... sorry i got choked up as i typed this..............
