So much heated controversy over abortion and birth control!!! I'm just curious....How many here would get sterilized if the government paid for it and gave you $1000 i would not do it if the government paid me 1000x that. or 10000x that. or 100000x that.

Once I'm done having kids, I plan on getting snipped. Why not have the government pay me for it...as long as they throw in a cold bag of peas for me to sit the ole nuts on afterwards to heal. My question to others is how many people would you pay to have sterilized yourself if you got a tax credit? With welfare spending about 11% of total spending, I'd easily pay for 5 of those; cheaper than the amount of my taxes that goes towards welfare programs. $1k cash slammed down on the table is much more visually effective to people.

I fathered two children and got snipped because I believe it to be the responsible thing to do. Just to be clear, I have no problem with those who have a different belief on this issue and would oppose any attempt to force or prevent others from acting or not acting based on their belief system.
btw, the government did pay for it as I was in the military at the time and I would not have taken payment for doing what I believed to be right action.

No, 1k isn't even close to worth it. Besides, I'm probably the type that SHOULD be having kids. Wouldn't mind making a cool 1k after I have all the kids I feel like having though .

I would have taken the money to get fixed. I absolutely didn't want any more kids.

I did it in 1979 after DD2 was born w/o payment simply because 2 was what we wanted and felt we could afford to responsibly raise.
In fact, we had to PAY to have it done as our insurance did NOT cover any female 'optional' items including ANY form of birth control, pregnancy care, mamograms b4 60.........

Had 3, enough for me...snip. Have never had to worry about birth control again. They wouldn't have to pay me $1000, no birth control is worth way more than that.

I remember it vividly, the doctor walked in and said,"this will be short and sweet."
I replied,"It's already short, how are you going to make it sweet?"
Can I get that check retroactively?
P.S. Merkins were not provided with my procedure.

I asked my doc to sterilize me after my second kid was born, but in the end, it was easier for my husband to take the cut for us. If he dropped dead today and I was faced with the possibility of dating, I would likely go ahead and get fixed. There is no way I want to face another pregnancy, another baby - especially if it was because I had anonymous sex with some David Beckham look alike in a bathroom of a seedy club.

I'd have to read up on the side effects. If things wouldn't uh, dry up on me, I'd probably do it. I don't really see kids in my future.

If I was already planning on it I would go ahead and take it. 1k couldn't convince me to do it otherwise. OTOH - I'm not hurting for money.

Seems like most people here that would accept the money, would do it anyway, so the money wouldn't really be an incentive just a bonus.

What's this about sex with David Beckham? Yes please!
Im already considering permanent birth control since we don't want kids (i am 100% against me procreating), so the money isn't a motivator for me. I wouldn't turn it down, either.

Responsible people do it anyway. The point is trying to get the ones who aren't responsible to do it. I don't think paying to sterilize is a good idea but if you are incapable of supporting yourself or others, then you should be on birth control and if it doesn't work for you due to health issues, you have two choices, get off the dole or get sterilized.

Actually rewarding instead of penalizing people for doing the RIGHT thing would be such a turn around for uncle sugar that it floors me.

Just for the record there is no Uncle Sugar just like there is no Santa. Your Christmas present comes from and is paid for by Ma and Pa so it's just a reduction from your inheritance. Money received from our government must first be taken from you if you are a productive tax paying citizen.

Money received from our government must first be taken from you if you are a productive tax paying citizen. That is not exactly true. It may be true if there was one big bucket of money that was being used to divy up money. But the money supply and wealth is not like that. There is no finite amount of money and/or wealth that gets split between people.

The government is not a profit center so the money it takes in must be taken from the citizens first or when they borrow or print it in which case the citizens pay for it later with interest.

If the goal is population reduction it would be much more efficient to offer a benefit to seniors who choose to commit voluntary suicide. It would help resovle the issues with Social Security, Medi care, health costs and no one could cash the check. Just tell Big Brother to stay home and do their constitutional duties and we will be better off.

I'm missing the point. Government revenue is determined almost exclusively by tax collection so money spent is also collected, preferably beforehand but more recently by borrowing or printing money for some future generation to pay for with interest. We don't get anything for free.
