I LOVE Judge Judy! I know it's not "real" court, but the crap that comes out of her mouth just cracks me up!
It's actually been some good lessons for my kids (when I take over the TV from them and she's on). My SS would argue with me all the time about stupid stuff - now he sees the same stuff he would have said on the TV in the participants and why she's shutting them down as being morons. Her logic (repeatedly) has helped some of what I've been trying to say to them sink in.

As for "cult" - she use to be on around here from 4pm-5pm and the local news would follow right after. Sometimes, the severe weather alerts would break in and interrupt JJ. The local news had a segment where viewers could call in with comments about the news cast/opinions.
There was one guy that would always call in complaining about them prempting JJ to warn viewers of possible tornadoes in the area. They would always play his rants - they were so funny to listen too as he was serious - JJ was more important to him than other viewers being warned of the weather.
They got a new weather girl and he called in congratulating her. Then he gave her the rules:
Rule #1: Do not interrupt Judge Judy Rule #2: See rule number 1
He was serious!! LOL!!

As an attorney, I'm horrified at some of the stuff that happens in her court room. However, sometimes I wish judges had more leeway to tell people to STFU and pull their heads out of their butts a la Judge Judy.
As a result of shows like that, I regularly deal with unrealistic expectations about what happens in court and what a court actually has power to do.

Swamp - I agree with you. I'm not an attorney, but I've been to court plenty enough with child custody battles w/ex, and what is portrayed is nowhere near reality.
I do wish there was more acceptance for judges, lawyers and others to be able to "tell it like it is" instead of having to tip-toe around the issue.

What would happen if all the TV judges has a Christmas party together?
A drunken, petite Judge Judy screaming up at Judge Mathis. Judge Joe Brown hitting on Judge Milian. A hair pulling contest between Judge Maria Lopez and Judge Hatchett. All the bailiffs standing in the corner shaking their heads.
I would hope that someone would have the good sense to get pics with their cellphone.

you people need help, step away from the TV. Daytime TV is another good reason to work or volunteer outside the home.

It's only a cult if she serves Kool-Aid. Sorry, no drinks in the courtroom.

Sorry, no drinks in the courtroom. You're just a meanie!!!! I'm only telling you what I'm told. I have been on autopilot and wandered in court with my morning tea, and have been promptly told to remove myself from the courtroom.

It could be worse. Your mom could be hooked on Maury. "Dwayne, in the case of three month old Taneesha, you are NOT the father. William, the the case of three month old Taneesha, you ARE the father."

Swamp, I'm pretty sure it was the strong odor of gin coming from your "tea" that made them tell you to leave. Probably. All the security dudes are retired road patrol. You can't sneak anything by them.

I love Judge Judy, and I wish some of the stupid lawsuits could be resolved in a real court like this.

One of my very close relatives has been a judge for many, many years, and he always tells me he can't watch it. He says although entertaining, it's not representative of the courts and the professionalism (and respect) that judges should demonstrate. Judges can be stern and she would be able to get her point across in better ways. BUT, he does realize it's for entertainment.
Oh, and it actually is a real small claims court. I'm pretty sure though, that when there is a monetary judgment given, the show (instead of the one who loses) pays the penalty. That's why people agree to go on it.
