My wife was all excited about this. Apparently not all Starbucks take payment like this, but she went into one that did and paid with her phone.
The silly things that gets people excited.

I was reading about this as well. Starbucks is only the beginning. I would hope that they'd have some really good security methods. Here's a link money.cnn.com/2011/01/19/technology/mobile_payments/index.htmAnd here's what seems to be coming up: What happens next: The looming game-changer in mobile payments is a technology called "Near Field Communication" (NFC), which swaps data over very short distances. Put a NFC chip -- for example, one built into in your smartphone -- near an NFC reader and you don't need to awkwardly scan a bar code on your phone or send a text message to transfer money.

<chuckling> Actually, that was the response when debit cards first came out... "No thanks".... "Why would I want to do THAT??"
I'll bet it catches on. Especially if it means you don't have to carry cc's around.

There are numerous reasons to not want to use debit cards. If I am chosing to pay with plastic, a credit card is always my choice.

You'd need to carry your phone around. A CC takes much less space than a phone.

SF A credit card is also my first choice and I agree that there are plenty of reasons not to use debit cards. But when they first came out, most people wrote checks for purchases; it was not common to use cc's for day to day purchases.
Who doesn't carry a phone around these days?

I cannot speak for anyone but myself. I am not tied to my cell phone like a lease. My co-worker has his on all the time and on his belt. He takes and receives phone calls all day as well as text messages. He is in meetings and sends/receives texts the entire time. When we are out at lunch the phone is glued to his ear for nearly the entire time. If he cannot hear it ring(due to noise on the streets), shortly thereafter his wife will call back excoriating him for not answering the call. I know this because he is apologizing profusely and going into lengthy explanations as to why he did not hear the call come in. Carrying a cell around 24/7 is like a technological strait jacket.

<Agilemom sheepishly raises her hand>
I have a phone, but it's not with me 24/7 and it's just a phone, not a smartphone/camera/ turn straw into gold phone.

I don't get many phone calls or text messages - especially during the day - but my phone is on my person all the time. It is the phone number the school has, all the after-school activities have, and my kids have memorized. No matter where I am my kids and the people responsible for them at any time can get me with 1 call. I don't answer it if I'm in a meeting and my husband or my mother calls - but when the "School Nurse" pops up, I answer it, every time. I will stop mid-sentence of a presentation and take the call. That's my deal.
But yes - your co-worker sounds more like he has a wife-problem than a technology problem.

I like your usage of "police lingo"....
All my kids are grown adults and on their own. The less ways they can contact me the better off I am. Of course they are boys, and don't need to talk to me five times a day or else they have a meltdown.

I actually know his wife. My co-worker, for lack of a better word is like an old-woman.
