It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Ouch! That's gotta hurt! I guess we're all aware these are rough economic times, but to cut the police and fire department staffs is scary stuff. I imagine the people of Camden are pretty darned upset!

Good luck, Camden. We in Tucson were threatened last year with a "deep" cut, while already understaffed 30% of required for full protection, like your basic response to a burglary, which we no longer get, SO-- we voted for a 1% sales tax, to stop this. Guess what?? A few months later-- same thing, and a request for another tax hike on the state level, and we said no. (They always throw in the teachers, too, to make sure and hit every voter, not just some..) We have a newly elected Republican on the City Council-- first in about a million years ----27 or something like that.... LOL-- he is not popular.. except, of course, to the ones he is popular with!! God bless Camden-- good luck. So far-- no further cuts to cops and fire or teachers... yet. BUT... but....... I thought they said we HAD to, OR ELSE... LOL-- they did manage to cut some graffiti art programs for inner city kids, that already got busted for graffiti-ing some buildings downtown without permission, stuff like that was cut, and bus fares for the poor were raised a nickel, or something like that, over INCREDIBLE protest. Can't have everything.............

Yeah, this ain't good. It's been all over the news here this past week and I really can't believe it actually happened. They showed on the news this afternoon all the laid off cops and firefighters, such a shame. Camden is so screwed to begin with...

The state should take over this city, actually it sounds like it should have a long time ago.

Draconian cuts to social programs is what is needed. Notice govt officials first put the ax on services and protection to the tax payers. The entire state of NJ has problems. Camden is small potatoes.

The state is in as bad shape as Camden. They like California made to many improperly funded contracts. Now the chickens come home to roost. Some blame the new govenor but he did not make the mess. Just hope he has some idea to straighten it out.

It is happening all over. Florida , new Governor, while having promised tax cuts, facing 4 billion deficit now on the budget, just not going to happen at least short term, and with the stimulus funds drying up, doubt you will see more, no one wants then correct?
Expect more of the Camdens happening through out the country. Many of those folks would have been out of work a year ago or so, finally catching up, States and Town, Cities are broke and with the new change in congress doubt you will see more spending.
Sure the new folks in Congress have a explanation why they couldn't help when they go home to campaign, they are hiring their spin doctors as I speak to be able to blame it on the other guy.

Isn't that Christie's state?? Sorry, do not know how to spell his name. I hear good things about him. Hopefully he can do good things for his state like Gov. Brewer is (trying to do) for AZ. Feds keep messing with her about her policies to save us money and get our state back on track, but she is fighting back. Good luck, NJ. I would hope they did away with all the nonsense before they cut cops and fire. But, from what I saw Brewer try to do, and the result-- I have to wonder if the Feds have them by the short hairs on cuts just like AZ.

I'm sure NJ is in bad shape, just like many states, but I'm not sure from the article if the problems with the city is the same kind that the states are having, except for the basics of spending beyond there means.

It is happening all over.
What is happening? Do you mean all the entitlement programs, corrupt government and unrealistic union demands that you seem to support have bankrupted New Jersey and other states? Have you reconsidered your position?

You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet folks...Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1974.....seems like yesterday, eh? The '70's was one of the greatest eras in the music industry IMHO.

I kid about NJ every now & then. The truth is that I have been there 4 or 5 times & never spent more than 2 hours on each visit (just flying thru) so I know very little about it. I do have a SIL that lives there. From her I know that it's expensive to live there (her house is very expensive compared to where I live), taxes are outrageous, a fair amount of crime, a lot of crime in the state government, & cold in the winter. It just doesn't sound like my idea of a great place to live.
