I made a promise to myself that I WOULD start exercising more and eating healthier this year. Weight issues run in both sides of my family, and I want to be healthy enough to keep up with my growing boy and to just have the energy to get through each day. So yesterday I started tracking my food and it actually helped me eat less. Today I ate my breakfast of oatmeal with blueberries and a glass of water at around 6:15. It's 8:30 and I'm already Jonesing for an unhealthy snack. How do you deal with food cravings?

I'd love to be able to make an egg sandwich a couple of days a week, but I don't have time. Maybe tomorrow I'll have a slice or two of toast with PB instead of oatmeal.

I'm not sure if you're back to work yet, do you have time to prep a few days' worth of stuff at once? I individually wrap little egg rounds and do up breakfast wraps at the office - takes about a minute to reheat everything and roll it up. add bacon, cheese, veggies, whatever.
I can prep a week's worth of breakfast in about half an hour, and then plastic wrap everything once's it's cooled.

Egg in the microwave with a slice of cheese and an english muffin only takes 3-5 minutes.

That's a good idea - I guess I can cook a bunch of eggs on Sunday, then have them throughout the week. Thanks.

I agree that protein for breakfast is essential for keeping hunger pangs at bay. Remember the old saw "Eat like a King at breakfast, a Prince at lunch and a Pauper at dinner"? The theory is solid. You need the most energy (calorie burning) during the day to get and keep you going. Most people (but of course not everyone) need the fewest calories at night. So unless you run marathons after dinner, make it your lightest meal of the day. Good quality protein for breakfast it is!

this morning I had two eggs with broccoli and cheese, one piece of buttered toast, and a glass of water. It's almost 10 and I'm not at all hungry.

I do a protein breakfast. Then around lunch I do another high protein meal. Dinner is soup and salad.

I've been trying to lasso my eating back under control too. Breakfast is hard for me... I get up really late so I'm always rushing in the morning, and some days I'm lucky if I shovel in some cottage cheese from the container before I leave I'm going to start hard boiling eggs on the weekends so I can have them for breakfasts along w/ the cottage cheese and toast, maybe bananas or something easy to eat on the run. I get sugar/junk cravings all the time too and it's hard for me to not give in I try to drink a lot of water & just not think about it, and it gets better eventually! Soda is really tough for me because I love it, but I've started buying flavored seltzer instead and have been able to cut the soda back!

I think I need to start getting more plain yogurt. I usually eat that on top of my oatmeal and fruit - or if I want to cut down on my carbs/bread, I'll have a banana with yogurt and a spoonful of peanut butter. But I think everyone is right - I need to get more protein in my diet in general. Lunch today is a tuna sandwich, and I have carrot sticks, a banana, and a granola bar as snacks.

DH loves the greek yogurt (being Greek and all...) but I can't stand it I do like fruit yogurt though, that is always a good snack! I prefer cottage cheese though. I've been munching carrots & celery sticks for snacks this week. Can't beat them cost-wise - I think I paid under $1 for the bag of celery and $.99 for the bag of carrots and they'll last me most of the week!

So now I'm looking at low cal/carb-high protein snacks, since that seems to be my problem. I'm coming across edamame, which looks like little green nuts. Has anyone tried them?

Edamame are delicious. Watch out, though. Pure soy can wreck havoc on some people's gastro intestinal processes.

I like pistachios for a good snack, too. if you're going to try out edamame, look for either a microwave steamer bag, or boil them on the stovetop. either way, grind some sea salt on 'em and enjoy. I'm stuck at a site other than my home office this week for training. I picked up some cottage cheese on my way home to mix with some fruit for easy breakfast the rest of the week. I can leave the container in the fridge, and bring in whatever fruit I want each morning. a little protein, a little sweet. yum!

I use www.myfitnesspal.com to track my food and stuff. If you eat healthy you can usually eat quite a bit a key I have found is to allow yourself an occasional "cheat" here and there...and also find healthy stuff you like....like I have found frozen fruit, I like to eat it when it is like half frozen / unfrozen...it is kind of like an "ice" to me, but it is fruit, and relatively good for you good luck

For about the past year, I've eaten an apple, a banana, and 1/4c walnuts for breakfast. It is so filling and easy to prepare/eat. As for cravings, I find there isn't a hard and fast rule about them. I rarely eat sugar, but find if I do it for a day or two the sugar cravings really pick up and I have to detox for a couple days before they go away. I actually use raisins for this - eating them satisfies my sugar need but doesn't cause my body to crave more sugar later on. Other times I figure cravings are nothing to worry about and I let myself indulge. In the grand scheme of things, eating a bunch of chips isn't going to derail my health goals.
