Washington increasingly needs Beijing's help in managing world troubles, from piracy off Africa to Iran's nuclear program and reinvigorating the world economy.
I find this one laughable. Instead of putting a bunch of hired guns onto the ships who would shoot the "pirates" into the sea as feed they need a big fancy warship with the full politically correct crew, women, disabled - whomever else they can think of, at a cost of untold millions. I'm guessing you could find a shooter who would take a little trip for say a few thousand bucks. Why is this not possible? Oh right, some LAW that says they can't have guns on ships. Most laws point directly to government self preservation.

I have said since the escalation in the piracy problem that the solution is in the Constitution: To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water; But see, doing it this way would be cheaper and wouldn't enrich the Military Industrial Complex, so it won't be done.

Exactly. One karma point for you.
By the way, I'm up to 70 now. Who is my secret admirer? Beers or a bed, it all depends.

Cheapest way is to keep the scan of a military satillite on the area and when the pirates get near another ship send a plane to sink the boat. Works night and day and gives quick response.

Translation: Obama, you spend like a drunken sailor with late stage syphilis, and it's time to break out the kneepads. Read more here.---------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't see a need for knee pads as you suggest. Two great powers, getting togther to shmooze a bit, toast each other , get to know each other a bit better. I like this way better then the previouse administration's handling of a similer type visit. Since I like this Administration handling of things better then the past one might has something to do with my feelings. Possible because the visitor is holding almost 3 trillion of our debt in their hands has something to do with it too and realize to get along is better then to not get along ----------------------------------------------------------- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a speech Friday that the countries needed to manage their conflicts but their shared interests were so entwined as to constitute entanglement. "History teaches us that the rise of new powers often ushers in periods of conflict and uncertainty," Clinton said. "Indeed, on both sides of the Pacific, we do see trepidation about the rise of China and the future of the U.S.-China relationship. We both have much more to gain from cooperation than from conflict." Chinese officials have emphasized what they see as common concerns while acknowledging the complexity of the relationship. "When the relationship is strained we need to bear in mind the larger picture and not allow any individual issue to disrupt our overall cooperation," Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said in a speech Friday. For the protocol-obsessed Chinese leadership, a highlight of the visit will be Wednesday's state banquet — an honor denied Hu on his last trip to the White House in 2006. President George W. Bush thought state banquets should be reserved for allies and like-minded powers and instead gave Hu a lunch.

Maybe. Not so sure though. You wouldn't want to blast a group of fishermen out of the water. Where would the planes come from? I don't know if they have bases in reasonable flying distance to all the hot spots. I still think the mercenary idea is the cheapest by far and best. If I was a ship owner I would have some guys like that on my ship and not give a god damn what any law said about not having guns on board. Hell, if I currently wasn't enjoying such prominence I would sign up in a heartbeat. A couple dozen or so tours and you'd have enough to buy a house.

Actually from a emotional standpoint I agree with you , surprised? On a non emoitional level, these folks, pirates are holding a lot of innocents as hostages till ransome is paid. While up to now, with all the brandishing of weapons, the acceptance of ships being able to use non lethal ways to stave off boardings , fire hoses, boarding nets, ship maneuvering...even force by nations naval power if they get there in time..being accepted by the Pirates as a legiimate way to stave off capture, once casualties rise against them from military specific atttacks, planes other sources..then the escalation may begin and lives may be lost. Even if the laws were changed and ships who routenly sail these waters were allowed to arm them selves with small arms, similer to merchantman in the 18th century did as protection against pirates and maurauders, then sailors would have to be paid danger pay, trained peoples hired to fight back , a armed militia , and again with the escalation. It is a big area, and not enough naval presence to be every where . Possible shipping companies would chip in for a fund to hire them, Naval, but the cost would be enormouse and what about small independent shippers and merchantmen, not all are hugh combines with big assetts.

Well, it looks like Obummer's kneepads were too worn out. I agree with Hu 100%; no one nation is responsible enough to possess the world's reserve currency. And the world (as well as some Americans) are sick and tired of having dollar depreciation affect everything they (we) do. Kill the dollar as the world's reserve currency, and finally we can kill these wars and entitlements. The entitlements will be over, Democrats. The endless wars will be over, Republicans. Count on it, it's just a matter of the only constant in this world: Time. Hu calls currency system 'product of the past'
