I think the answer to this question is going to be a 'No', but I will ask anyway.
I ended up paying a fee to a head hunter firm this year. I was unemployed for a good portion of 2011 and do not itemize. Can I take a deduction for this fee anywhere on 1040?

the fee is related to "job searching" and would be an "itemized deduction" on schedule A, subject to the 2% of AGI limit.... so, if you do not itemize you may not gain a current year extra tax benefit.
