Pilates is the greatest exercise routine invented, IMO. I bought the original machine from QVC and used it every day after work to de-stress. I see they have a lighter version out now, and would love to own that one. I was even asked to talk on the phone with Marjalene as she was would demonstrate and was in such good shape. Of course men use these, for strength and stretching.

Having heard a few here mention doing them, I bought a DVD and started doing them. OMG! They are awesome, not hard to do and take very little time! I felt muscles I didn't know I had and I thought I was is good shape. NOT! Do men do these? Really? I've been wanting to try some new form of exercise since it's too cold to bike right now. What's it consist of? I have never done yoga or Pilates. Are they close in comparison? Sorry, I have no idea.

femme: Oh, it's fabulous, most exercises are concentrated on the core muscles which is your stomach, but it's for the whole body as they send you a pamphlet. Resistance and flexability are the main exercises. Joseph Pilates that invented it had a body of steel at 77. btw: I googled him and there is a video, going to watch it now...

I love pilates, and saw results almost immediately- it was the only time in my life I had a six- pack All for only half an hour three times a week. Femme, it is a lot of stretching and focuses on your "core" (stomach).

lone: That is the version without the machine. Look on QVC, and you will find the machine that will really give you the reisiance training at optimal levels. It is fabulous. Believe me, once you try the machine you will get hooked.

I sold my orgiinal machine as I kept moving around so much, and am so sorry now as it had a lifetime warranty. The mat is ok, but couldn't get into it like the machine. It's truly a miracle machine. Every guy that saw it had to get on it and try it...

lone: Thanks, back at you!!!! ;D You can start with the bands, but definitely more exercises with the machine. My tummy, no problems, but I have lost upper body strength and love the resistance of the bottom bar on the machine for the legs. You adjust the strength you want and go for it. I think they have classes close by here, going to check into that.

How expensive of a machine are we talking here? Well, at the time, I paid $400.00, but it was the steel base and had must come out. The shipping cost a lot. Now, I see they have a lighter weight version, more affordable, maybe around $200.00. Just google QVC for specifics.

My problem in getting the machine is I don't have the room. My eliptical is setting in my dining room as it is. Couldn't you put that in the garage, or put the Pilates in your bedroom as it doesn't take up that much room. It's just long and mine could fold up and they said put under the bed...lol.

I do better in classes with a trainer usually. But when I bought mine at the time I was able to afford a personal trainer to come to the house and show me how to start out slowly. Those days are gone, as "hello" to recession.

I would probably do better with a trainer, too. It would help motivate me, something I have a problem with. Much more fun to sit here. LOL...Which I seem to do without motivation.

The thing is, when you see the Pilates sitting there, it does inspire you. I have to warn you, if anyone decides to buy one, you must start out slowly. I loved it so much, I over-did in the beginning. Boy, did I feel it the next day...

I took a Pilates class at the Y. I tried several DVDs at home before I found one I love. It has a workout circle to enhance the moves. I usually do Pilates in the morning before work. It relieves stress, stretches the muscles out from running & spin class, improves your posture, etc.
There is a Pilates studio walking distance from where we stay on vacation. I've been thinking about checking out their prices.

Peach: Could you be a bit more specific on the DVD you settled on? This tip could save us time. I did get a book of the core exercises but I know there is a lot more exercises.
Youtube has some videos on Pilates moves. I haven't checked for the full workout.
Pilates is very popular in my town and several different facilities offer classes. No one has mentioned the machine but the women I know who do this are very slim. A lot of people go the the Pilates express. I have a free facility class pass so I might give that a try.
If you want to try Yoga, I got the Richard Hittlemans 28 days to yoga. It is step-by-step then ends up with a rotation of three different yoga sequences using all the poses - one for each day for 3 days. I have been lax in using it but used to do it every morning.
I did Callenetics and still do. When it says you see results in just 10 sessions, that is true. It is dynamic isometrics. I use this on the nonweight days.
T-Tapp is along the same line. I did not have the complete workout but used this for variety.

Yoga and pilates have some similarities but they are not the same. Yoga works to increase strength, flexibility, and discipline/concentration (whole body), while pilates focuses on strengthening the core. Yoga cool downs can be relaxing, but I would never call pilates relaxing. If it's relaxing, you're doing it wrong!

Thanks for the info, Peach. Pilates seems to have a wide range of options.
I went to a 50 minute class last night to use my one day pass to that facility that was about the expire. It was very similar to the book I have but they added leaning on an exercise ball for the side leg circles and seated rotary twist to the back wall.
What I noticed is how heavy some of my parts felt. I did have deep hip soreness this morning.
I am going to start incorporating some of these exercises in with my other programs.

I did Pilates in my pre-pregnant days and one thing I learned is that you really really really know how to do the exercises otherwise it's pointless. Also, there are many Pilates DVDs out there advertising all kinds of stuff, but I would recommend to get the ones done by Romana Kryzanowska or her students bc if I remember correctly she follows Joseph Pilates's method and not many variations that have been created since.
