Our hot water heater was installed when the house was built (2001) Are there any on the market that are more energy efficient? Have there been any energy efficient improvements made for them in the last few years or is it what it is and an electric hot water heater is still going to be a major part of our electric bill.

Spend your money on a tankless. Won't take long for it to pay for itself, and you never have to wait for the water to heat up. In our family of six, we've had the washer and dishwasher running while somebody was in the shower, no problem. They're grrrrreat.

I live on the gulf after hurricane Ivan I changed over to a gas tank less hot water heater it was one of the best things I have done to this house. it I lose power again for several weeks I can start the heated with my generator as it has an electronic ignition when needed and have hot water fast. I also changed my stove and oven over for the same reasons and down here gas is cheaper than electric

We installed a solar water heater 3 years ago and our electric bill dropped 1/2. Between all the rebates the payoff was 18 months. No problems.
