anyone know a good way to find one?
I am interested in doing one, somewhere near the Kansas City area. I tried some internet searches but the results confuse me.
Ideally I would like to do it sometime between Dec and March-ish
I did one once like 6 years ago, but I stumbled onto it from a bulletin board at my old gym.
any ideas?

Not much help. I've never seen one just for bench. Most are tied to a power lifting competition. I guess you could look for someone who sanctions power lifting and see if they know of any bench comps. I would suspect they are pretty localized. Do you go by straight weight, or on a percentage basis?

the one I did was based on some kind of scale (I want to think it was called the "rensler" scale or something like that).....basically it is based on your weight, and each weight has a corresponding coefficient, so basically everyone competes against each other.... but say if a guy that weighs 150lb benches 250 lbs, it would be the same as like a 200 lb guy that benches 325 lbs.....this is obviously just made up data, but the idea is it equalizes thinsg a bit and the 150lb dude can compete against the 200 lb dude...if that makes sense
the other kind of competition I watched had weight classes, like boxing, and like weight classes competed againts each other only

That sound like something I would like to try. I fall into the "small" but deceptive category. I scale around 190 and max benched 305 (without a bench shirt) about two months ago. I think if I was going to try and complete, I could hit 350 with the right gear. I would like to do it just to see all those guys with the terrible form get disqualified on their first try. I assume in a competition they would require you to stop at the bottom, and keep your ass on the bench at all times.
I often think about pointing out their bad form at the gym, but I figure it's up to them to correct it. Most guys would rather bench 250 by lifting their butt off the bench than do it right and only get 200.

Perhaps it is because I'm a weenie (I can only press 55lbs) but how does a person's butt get off the bench? Aren't they lying down? I can't envision it.

Most guys would rather bench 250 by lifting their butt off the bench than do it right and only get 200. yep, form counts.....in fact they didn't count one of my lifts because I lifted un-even (I tend to lead with my right arm ) but I still lifted my next lift a heavier weight and it was "even", so all was good (You got to do 3 lifts too, forgot to mention that)
