San Francisco student hands out rat poison to classmates.By: Andrea Koskey 01/13/11 4:11 PM Examiner Staff Writer As many as seven middle school students were transported to the hospital after ingesting rat poison given to them by a peer, according to San Francisco Unified School District officials. All seven students – boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 12 - were transported to area hospitals and are in stable condition, according to fire officials The San Francisco Fire Department was called to Martin Luther King Junior Academic Middle School around 12:08 p.m. Thursday for reports of the students ingesting rat poison. The first fire engine was on scene three minutes later. It is unknown how long it took the students to report the poison to school officials. One student allegedly invited other students to eat the poisonous cube as candy, according to a released statement by San Francisco Unified School District officials. A teacher was alerted of the situation and contacted poison control, district officials stated. It seems only two children actually ate the poison, while other students apparently licked it, Fire Department spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said. None of the students was showing any symptoms of poisoning, but were taken to the hospital as a precaution so doctors could evaluate them, Talmadge said. “The amount (consumed) was so miniscule that we're not expecting them to have any symptoms at all,” she said. The middle school is located in the Portola neighborhood of San Francisco, with 530 students enrolled. Found in the classroom and told it was candy, according to reports.

Oh. Okay. I am glad they are all right and hope they learned a valuable lesson to not eat something because another kid told you it is "candy".

See... this is one of those times I have as much contempt for the victims as I do the perp. In my head this went down something like this.
Little psycho kid, "Here, eat this it's candy!"
Dumb kid, "It doesn't look like any candy I've ever seen."
Psycho, "It's home made candy."
Dummy, "Oh, ok, what's it taste like."
Psycho, "uh.. lemon drops I guess."
Dummy, "I don't know, why don't you eat some first?"
Psycho, "I uh.. don't like lemon drops."
Dummy, "Well I don't know, this whole things seems fishy, but what the hell." Chomp, chomp, chomp.
I mean freaking really? *head shake* I'm pretty sure Darwin would say any kid that naive deserves to be poisoned.

I was thinking the exact same thing you were Dark. I think 10-12 years old is old enough to know not to eat some strange substance someone claims is "candy".

Have you seen kids candy lately? Worms, dirt, freaky exploding things... They thought it was candy! No kid would think somebody is trying to kill them or poison them at that age. Who would do that except a sociopath? Kids don't even know what that is and if they aren't one themselves, they don't think that way.

No kid would think somebody is trying to kill them or poison them at that age. Then their parents are complete morons. What 10-12 year old hasn't had the don't ever take food from strangers thing drilled into their heads already? Stranger danger, checking Halloween candy before eating it, a decade's worth of experience with human nature... I'm sorry the kids should have known better at that age. I know you're old and stuff, but you do remember being in school as a kid right? How many kids in your class would walk around at lunch and give their candy away to total strangers? I never saw it once in the years I went to school. I don't remember any of my siblings coming home talking about all the candy the other kids at school gave them either. This wasn't like a kid sharing cupcakes with the whole class because it's their birthday or something. It was one kid walking up to other kids and giving away "candy" out of the blue. Unless the kids were special ed or something, that should set off some alarm bells.

Kids in my kids' school constantly share food and they have all types of crap that goes around. It becomes a bloody food frenzy where we have to tell our kids don't share your food with others simply because they go hungry otherwise. Nope unless the poison looked really weird I could easily seeing this happen. Only one problem kid here.

Trading your turkey sandwich for somebody else's Doritos is one thing. A kid giving away candy for no reason is another.

We weren't greedy with out stash man! <shakes head at the kids today>>

LOL! I was one of those kids selling the cinnamon tooth picks. Or candy bars. My mom didn't have enough to give us an adequate allowance, and I had to fund my habits somehow.

Unless the kids were special ed or something, that should set off some alarm bells. I see kids sharing food and candy all the time. I don't think they would be thinking about "stranger danger" when it is someone they go to school with. Heck, half of the kids I work with will pick candy up off the ground and eat it. No, they are not special ed. And Yes, they do share their candy, cookies, etc. Today I had 5th graders taking turns with a Gogurt (or however you spell those disgusting yogurt filled packets)during snack time. The one boy forgot his snack so the other boy said he would share the Gogurt with him. I told them it wasn't very sanitary, but they just told me that they were squirting it in their mouth and not touching their lips on it. I just shrugged and said..."ok then".
