I'm hoping you all can provide some insight for my DD. She is very physically fit - she works out almost every day, and she works with three different trainers at her gym. And when I say she works out, she really works hard. She runs, does weights, pulls heavy chains, spin classes, yoga, you name it. She just ran the Army 10 miler 2 weeks ago, and did a triathalon about a month ago. Her problem is she can't lose weight. She is stuck at the 160-166 pound range. With all the working out she does, she should weigh a whole lot less. She eats between 1200-1500 calories each day, and it's healthy stuff - nor burgers, fries, etc. She and I both are on a gluten free diet, but she's been like this for a couple of years now. She's in the Army reserves, and just did the fitness test where she scored 274. It would have been higher but the sgt. made her stop pushups at 33 and she still had 45 seconds to go. So as you can see, she's in great shape, just can't drop the pounds. Any thoughts?

The sgt made her stop with 45 left to go? Does she ever change her workout routine? And is it necessary for her to eat gluten free? I know that a friend of mine who is a trainer only recommends gluten free for those who need it.
It could also be that with as active as she is- her body could feel like she is being starved. Have either of her trainers looked at her caloric intake output ratio recently? When I get below so many pounds, I actually have to increase my calorie intake with my workouts to keep losing. My body thinks I'm not feeding it anymore.

I have been wondering if she might be under eating for a while now. But who am I, right?!? She typically burns 300-800 calories in a session, which doesn't take into account everything else she does during the day. She does change up her routine quite a bit. She works at the gym, and she's kind of their guinea pig - each of the 3 trainers have totally different styles, plus the other instructors have her try out their stuff - spin, yoga, ab workouts, etc. I say that in a good way - she's always game for trying something.
And yes, that sgt. got in a bit of hot water about stopping her with 45 seconds to go. Luckily she wasn't trying to max out her score. And she and I are both gluten free - we are gluten sensitive and feel so much better.

She's either not eating enough, or she's binging in private.

Sounds like she's doing some pretty extensive training, so she could be gaining anywhere from 5 to 10 lbs of Muscle. Muscle always weighs more than fat. I did the same while lifting weights and doing cardio. Eventually she will lose if she continues, but will always keep some Muscle on her because of such hard core training. I don't think it's an eating disorder. JMO~

One thing I've heard about the gluten free diet is it can be very high in fat and even more processed than most processed foods..breads, cereal, etc.. Gluten free doesn't always = a healthy diet and mean you'll lose weight. Some assume because it's a "diet" they'll lose weight..not always so. She should get tested to see if she needs to be on a gluten free diet. If not, get off it and see if it helps. I've heard of people gaining weight eating gluten free. It's a very small percentage of people, roughly 1%, if I remember right, that are truelly gluten intolerant. The rest are just doing it because it's a "fad".

My DD is a body builder & exercise addict like your DD. I will check with her, but I recall that she has a certain # of days that she is on a high protein, high cal food regimin and then there is a day or two switch to low cal (I believe reduced work out those days also). This was specifically done to keep the body from being 'dependent' on the high cal and activity level. If you give your body the same cal in/out every day it causes your weight to plateau and metabolism to slow. I might not be describing it in the correct terms as I don't follow that lifestyle, but my DD is a definite expert and working towards competition so she can become a trainer.
ETA: I probably should have added that she is a size 6 and 5"10 or so - not sure of weight, but she is very muscled
Oh my - I just realized that you said she's only eating 1200-1500 calories a day. That is probably way too low for the amount of workout you describe. She is actually starving her body if she's doing several hours of work out per day. So her metabolism is on "conserve" mode. Are the trainers giving her a nutrition plan to go with her workout schedule?

The main thing, is what was her weight at the beginning?

Thanks for all the input. I think more and more (as I've been trying to tell her ) she isn't eating enough. The other thought I did have is maybe her thyroid could be acting up. We have thyroid issues in my family. My mother just had an incident with hers about a year ago. I am trying to get in touch with her to find out a little more about the exact problem but they are away this weekend. She is 5'7", 22 and in high school she weighed around 130. She's always been extremely athletic, running cross country, playing field hockey year round and soccer year round. Many days she would do all 3 in one evening. The gluten issue doesn't come into it, because she's had this problem since before that. While she was in Basic training last year she was around 145-150. Her eating mostly consists of fruit, veggies, egg whites, greek yogurt, things like that. She isn't much of a bread eater, but sometimes she'll take a ham or turkey sandwich for lunch. She tried going to a nutritionist who didn't do much of anything but take her to the grocery store to buy food. What she really needs is someone to lay out a food plan, but I don't think any of her trainers do that. About 2 years ago she went through a really bad relationship breakup, and she went down to about 120 or so, and her system seems to be messed up ever since. That is another reason I was thinking that something like her thyroid might be acting up. She's a full time student, works, and works out most days, so she's not sitting on the couch being a couch potato.

I am no where close to being an expert on this kind of stuff, but from everything I have read, and looking at the other comments, I would suspect that she has put on quite a bit of muscle over the past two years and she may have a "soft outer shell", but underneath she is pure muscle. I wouldn't worry about her weight, unless she is. The additional calories will help her speed up her metabolism, especially if she gets her intake in even proportions throughout the day. If she were a male, I would suggest doubling or tripling her caloric intake just to keep up with the energy requirements her body needs. With that kind of exercise program, you can't starve yourself thin. I suspect she also has decent bone structure, not a petite, thin framed woman?

Tractor you are right, she doesn't have a small bone structure. Rail thin she'd never be small. Gotta love those family genes! She's worried about the weight because she's so close to the Army's height/weight guidelines, where she could fail. Go figure. Probably one of the fittest soldiers in her unit, but could be failed because of the guidelines.

Has she been in to see her doctor and gotten a medical opinion on it? I went to see my doctor a couple weeks ago for a cough and she chewed me out about my diet (1200-1500 calories) and told me to keep it at least 1600 per day. ymmv.

I agree with the advice that she needs her thyroid checked. Also the PCO thing. Also her sugar. Particularly if diabetes runs in the family. If her fasting blood sugar tests are showing insulin resistance- that could give a clue.
If she is gluten in tolerant; try to find a dietician that can point her in the right direction as far as meals that suit her needs- she may be able to get help through the nearest base or military hospital- if not try this source:
vegetariantimes.com they do gluten free articles also and have gluten free resources on their pages. HTH

I fall into the obese category at 5-8" and 198lbs. Not much fat on me either. Anyway, I would hope that they would take that into consideration. Maybe they'll promote her to Sargent so it won't matter.
