thanks everybody (except K ) congrats, MM!!! looks like I'm training for the Peachtree. Just me and 54,999 of my closet friends running a 10k in downtown Atlanta on July 4th. Doesn't that sound like a good time? I ran it in 1999. I really have no interest in running it again, but one of the ladies at church has that on her bucket list. I told her I would train and run with her. MM, I never realized this when I was running on a regular basis 10 years ago, but even if your goal is a 5k, a 4 or 5 mile run once a week (or every other week) really cuts your 5k time! I've been trying to do a 5 mile run at least twice a month. I think that's what boosted my time so much (last year at this race, my time was 33:30). Next year my goal is to break 30 minutes, and for the first time I actually feel it's a possibility I'm still buzzing from surpassing my 32 minute goal

Peach: Congrats on coming first in your age group again, and setting a new personal best I'm sure you can get your time under 30 minutes. Miss Margarita: Congratulations That's pretty good going for your first 5K, especially since you only started running 3 months ago!

MM,
Nice job. Next stop, sub 30 minute 5k!
Peach,
That sounds like a crazy race!!!! Most of the people are probably done by the time the people at the end get to the start line!

you can do it Miz B! Just keep following doc's orders.
The Peachtree is started in blocks of 5000 runners at a time, so it's really not as bad as it sounds. Serious runners are in the earlier groups. In years where the applications WAY outnumber the available spots, a qualifying race is required. Apps without a completed qualifying race do not get a number. The last 2 years, for the first time the race applications were in the paper more than once. The number of walkers has really increased. That's fine, but when it gets back to more than 55,000 runners wanting a race number, the walkers should NOT be allowed (IMO).

Peach- The thing is competitive race walkers can best average runners many times. And it's not fair to tell one group they are not allowed to participate. We had a track/ cross country coach in our region in high school who was always trying to DQ me for walking because I could best his worse runners despite my asthma as long as I started walking when I started with symptoms during a race. If I used my inhaler, I had to pull out. So I would walk a bit and then start running again. He couldn't say anything about larger runners who did that, or people recovering from injuries- so he picked with me. But there was no rule against walking. When we competed against a school outside our region, there were 3 girls who were of a religion where they were not permitted to wear the track shorts- they had taken up race walking to make themselves competitive on th distance circuit. They could beat every girl on almost every team- walking in skirts down to their ankles.
Not being as competitive time-wise as I am in spirit I guess is why qualifiers bug me. Especially if I am paying money to run in a race. Minimum cost to run here is generally $25-$30 and up.

hey, if they can make the time I don't care if they run or walk. 2 hours to complete a 10k though, clearly that's not a race walker. this race usually fills so fast that if you don't mail your app the day they come out in the paper, you won't get in. People come from all over the world to run this race. So when there are over 70,000 runners wanting a chance at one of the 55,000 spots, I don't see a problem with having a qualifier. There are many other 10k races in this area that don't require a qualifier. Saying "I completed the Peachtree" is kind of a prestige thing. the organizers do put the groups together by run time, so the walkers don't interfere with the serious runners. I'd just hate to see somebody who'd always wanted to run the Peachtree kept out by a walker, ya know?

he's wearing a long sleeved burgundy colored shirt & dark shorts; standing on the sidewalk.
I'm hoping for a great turnout. I want to do a Turkey Trot because there really isn't one on this side of town. The place that I wanted to hold it has told me no, but I don't think they realize that we will only be running on the camp property. All the registration, parking, etc can be done at our church, which is next to the camp property. The guy who I asked to help me lives in the area where I want to hold the race, and runs there all the time. He gave me a perfect alternate location if the camp organizers doesn't change his mind.
Nancy gave me a great suggestion to do a Run for the Pies. That's one she runs every year in FL, and Publix donates the pies. The ladies at our church would love to bake pies as prizes!

i kind of figured that as he is the only one, in the background, that had a number...but my eyes surely can't see it...lol
i'm sure it will all work out...is it trail running or does the camp have a track or paved surface?
btw...i hope your hubby's day surgery went/will go ok...

I agree with your point about qualifiers, but there are still not a lot of races here, and thanks to online reg, we get people who shouldn't be competing against locals. They should be in a separate competition category. We are usually just divided male and female with age separation. On the other hand, the upper level athletes tend to be much more enjoyable to be around for me. Aside from the random 2 year old who is trying to get Dad to get in the wagon so he can pull him. Uphill. ;D
