01/10/08 03:56 PM There are many financial blunders people make without even realizing it. I am here to correct those mistakes with a little advice and some general rules of thumb. The first thing every consumer needs to remember is that there is a big difference between a “want” and a “need”. “Wants” are the material goods that are not a requirement for life, but serve as ‘creature comforts’. Needs are the material goods that are required to live every day. I would highly recommend that everyone who reads this make a list of all their “wants” and a second list of all their “needs”. This will help in determining where your money should go. For those of you who are in the market for a car, I would highly recommend that you first sit down and decide if you really need a $65,000 Land Rover or whatever car you want to buy that you are going to use as an everyday driver. For most people, a cheaper car is enough for a daily driver. Buy the cheaper everyday driver car and use the extra money you save to buy better insurance (namely full coverage insurance and hail damage insurance) for the car, as well as gas for the car. Most people do not really need anything more in a car than all the safety features the car can hold, power windows and locks, power mirrors, heated exterior mirrors, an electro-chromic interior mirror, power-adjusting seats, and air conditioning. Any other feature falls under the “want” (creature comfort) category and is not a necessity to get back and forth safely to work every day. If your job or hobby requires you to buy a large, gas-guzzling vehicle, you must first decide if said vehicle will serve its desired purpose, and then only select a vehicle with the features necessary to accomplish said purpose.
For those of you in the market for a new house, I would highly recommend you “plan ahead” and choose a house that will be big enough for your current family and any additions to your family you wish to make in the future. Also, if you are going to buy a house, the most important thing to remember is that you must factor in the cost of utilities, cable or satellite TV, phone service (landline or cellular, whichever you decide to use), any insurance costs, and mortgage payments when determining the monthly payments you can afford for the house in question. Homeowners insurance is a must, and if your potential abode is in a flood plain, you also need flood damage insurance. A general rule of thumb for determining if you need flood damage insurance: If you live within a “flood plain”, and you are no more than 500 feet above the “flood stage” of the nearest body of water (river, lake, stream, or ocean), then you must buy flood damage insurance. Also, sump pumps are a must if you live in an area that gets a lot of rainfall during the year. Always, and I cannot stress this enough, ALWAYS read the fine print BEFORE you sign any mortgage papers. Fixed payment rate mortgages are a must if you intend to live at said residence long-term. I would recommend having an accountant or professional financial advisor present when you go apply for a mortgage, as they can determine what rates and terms are best for your lifestyle and purpose and keep you from unknowingly getting pulled into something you will regret later on.
One major rule of thumb: Calculate the total monthly cost of food, gas, utilities, TV and phone service, insurance, and mortgage and car payments, then subtract that number from your monthly income. Your monthly income should be no less than twice the total monthly payments you make on bills.

Maybe YOU need to re-examine the definitions of "needs" and "wants". I'm not sure how power mirrors, windows, locks and adjusting seats are needs. Same with AC. Heated exterior mirrors and electro-chromatic interior mirrors are LUXURIES.

Acutally, you just proved that this easier said than done. Otherwise it would actually be easier to do it than to simply type it and post on a message board (extremely easy). Therefore this would be easy to do and your statement that "nothing in life is easy" would be wrong.

01/10/08 04:16 PM The J, power mirrors, windows, locks, and adjusting seats are needs because they are safer to operate and can be operated without having to lean forward or across the passenger seat. If your car does not have power locks, how do you think it would be physically possible to unlock all the doors, get everyone in the car, and lock all the doors faster than a man with a gun can run up and carjack you at gunpoint? And what about cars without power windows? How is it possible to roll down all the windows on the car manually from the driver's seat? Or what would you do if you only had manual windows, all of them were down, and it suddenly started pouring down rain? You'd have one big mess inside your car. Heated exterior mirrors are needs for those who live in areas that get hit with snow and ice, or who wake up to find the car covered with mist from an early-morning fog, and electrochromic mirrors are needs for those who drive at night. Most exterior mirrors are too small for scrapers to be used on, and most people scrape so hard they can break the control arm the mirror is mounted to. A/C is a need for those who drive in hot areas so they don't die from the heat. I have seen many instances where elderly people, pets and children have died because they did not have air conditioning in their cars during the summer and they were in a parking lot waiting for a buddy or their parents to do some shopping. In that situation, even rolling down the windows will not save them.

It would be cheaper to buy a handgun and a concealed-carry permit than pay the car loan required to get all of the features you think are necessary.

01/10/08 04:23 PM (1) You should adjust your seat, mirrors, etc... before you start driving.
(2) Amazingly enough, people have driven at night without electro-chromatic mirrors for, oh, ~80 years, and some of them managed not to die.
(4) If people have AC, they don't need power windows. If people have neither, they can pull the car over and roll down the windows. Oh the horror of being inconvenienced for 45 seconds!!
(3) You're of course absolutely right about the power locks -- in fact, keyless entry is faster, so that's a need. As is bullet-proof glass, because locking a door isn't going to protect you from a .38
(4) Hate to break it you, but having A/C wouldn't have saved those people. first of all, A/C requires the car to be running, which most people don't do when they're sitting around in a parking lot. Second of all, those people have died because they didn't get out of a car.
(5) What's cheaper than heated side mirrors? A minature scraper. I got one at autozone for around $3. Perfect size to scrape my mirrors.

01/10/08 04:24 PM How anybody who is complaining that people today don't know the difference between wants and needs can turn around and say that things people lived without for many many years are necessities is beyond me. Power locks? OMG, can you imagine having to unlock doors by hand??? Um, yes... my boyfriend's and best friend's cars both do not have power locks. They survive just fine. I don't even have a car. Not a necessity at all for me.
Just because something makes your life marginally safer does NOT mean it is a need. A personal bodyguard would make me safer... still a luxury.

01/10/08 04:24 PM Unmaterial, it may be cheaper to buy a handgun, but a carjacker is not going to give you time to reach into the glovebox or wherever you keep the gun then turn and blow his brains out. Plus, a handgun is not going to save you if you are putting groceries into the car or walking to your car at night and someone comes up from behind you, sticks a gun in your back, and demands your keys and wallet. The moment you turn to attack, you're dead.

You could write a chapter on the importance of Hail Damage insurance for your car, a chapter on sump pumps, and then in the epilogue you could also mention it's important to save half of your income.
Note: most of us are old enough to remember cars before there were power anything. People managed to get by, somehow. Please don't leave your children in the car, even if you have A/C.

01/10/08 04:27 PM It's very noble of you to try to summarize some good financial ideas to keep people from making mistakes. But life isn't a textbook. Things never work out exactly the way you plan, so you have to react to things as they come along. You do need to have plans and goals, but there isn't one right plan for everyone. For instance, not everyone can afford a house "big enough for your current family and any additions to your family you wish to make in the future." Most people have to buy up a few times.

Remind me on something - how did these people get into this situation in the first place? If you're walking to your car with groceries and kids in an area when you can get robbed, why isn't a security guard with you?
And while this woman is walking to her car at night - if there is a parking lot that people get ambushed at night, WHY IS HER CAR THERE AT NIGHT?!?!?!?!?! And if she has to part there for some unknown reason, why isn't a cop there? Call your local PD! In the situation you described, the gunman had the benefit of being able to aim and shoot undisturbed. You DO NOT have that luxury when the person you are shooting at is ALSO shooting at you.
Midnight carjackings and McDonalds shootings... where do you live? If you are so good at saving money, you should have been able to afford a house in a better area.

If a guy sticks a gun in my side when I'm putting my groceries in my car, I'll make sure to stick my tongue out and say Na Na Na, you can't get me, I have power locks. Seriously. And you call it a safety issue, that IF I'm driving with ALL of my windows down and IF a downpour starts, I'm going to have a big mess! If a downpour is about to start, I'd be pretty silly to have all my windows down, whether they were power windows or not! I also somehow manage to drive at night without electro-whatever mirrors. There's a little switch at the bottom that tilts the mirror slightly. That's always been good enough for me.

And I guess a grocery service / personal assistant is a safety necessity because truthfully, the only way to avoid being held up while putting groceries in your car is not to put groceries in your car at all. 01/10/08 05:37 PM Hey, where's the mandatory seat warmer??
You have to come up with a good reason first.
Like...Seat warmers are a safety necessity because a cold *** could seriously distract from your attention to your driving, especially in cold northern climates. Not to mention, if you did offer to give a car-jacker a ride, and his *** was cold, he might be more likely to shoot you in the head. On the other hand, if his *** was nice and toasty, then he might fall asleep, at which point, you could escape, or pull your giant chrome plated hand gun out of the glove compartment and blow him away.
Not to mention, with the AC on, you'd be so cold, you might want your seat warmers to be on also. Also, turning on the seat warmers will help dry out the seats after the downpour gets in through all the open windows. That will aleviate some of the mess.

01/10/08 06:37 PM I've been converted.
MarkN is completely correct.
I was driving home from work. I realized I didn't have an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror. I was so distracted by the fact that I had lived without this essential safety device for most of my life, I got into a thirty car accident. Apparently, this accident took place directly in between a McDonalds and a grocery store, because eighteen carjackers with guns showed up. Because they had us surrounded, the paramedics couldn't show up. Thankfully, my power doors held them off, while my power windows were able to stop the dying people from bleeding into my car. Since I didn't have power seats, I was inconvenienced adjusting my seat while waiting for the accident to be cleared.
After everything was cleared, I continued on my way home. Then, because I don't have heated side mirrors, I again became distracted and totalled my car. Of course, now I'm going to invest in a new car. Specifically, I'm going to get a used HumVee with a .50 cal machine gun mounted on the roof. That should give me all the safety I need. Thank god MarkN opened my eyes!

01/10/08 06:45 PM Lots of safety advice.
When leaving a supermarket, whatever you do, don't put groceries in your car.
One must have two handguns...a chrome plated one, because everyone needs a chrome plated one...and a not-chrome-plated one, because one cannot take chrome-plated handguns into mcDonalds or people would be scared.
If you don't have mini wiper blades on your headlights, then you must carry Clorox wipes, in order to clean car-jacker's blood off your headlights after you shoot them.
And rearview mirrors that are not electro-magnetic should not be used at night.
.50 Cal Machine guns on the hoods of cars are great at foiling carjackers...but are most inconvenient to carry into the McDonalds with you.

I hate to admit it, but my Taurus has all of these. It was about $17,000 4 years ago. I never wanted the heated mirrors, electro-chromic mirror, or power adjusting seats, but they came with the engine upgrade, I think. My brother and his wife were at the casino for a few hours and he told his wife they should go because they left the kids in the car. The dealer asked how old the kids were and he said 35 and 37. I hope he had air conditioning so they didn't die.
My truck air conditioner has been broken a year so far no problem, good thing I got power windows so I can roll them up when the wind messes my hair. It would be impossible to go back 10 years to when I didn't have necessities like power windows, key less entry, mirrors that adjusted from inside the truck. So far I have been lucky with the hail damage I haven't ever known anyone to have any and didn't know you needed special insurance for it. 01/10/08 08:26 PM One major rule of thumb: Calculate the total monthly cost of food, gas, utilities, TV and phone service, insurance, and mortgage and car payments, then subtract that number from your monthly income. Your monthly income should be no less than twice the total monthly payments you make on bills.
Been playing the game for awhile, and I've never heard of this "rule of thumb" At the very least you should simplify the statement "no less than twice the total monthly payments you make on bills"? How about don't spend anymore than half your income on bills. What do you do with the other 50%? And what's included in "bills"? Again, never heard this before.
And, "all the safety features a car can hold" plus "power windows and locks, power mirrors, heated exterior mirrors, an electro-chromic interior mirror, power-adjusting seats, and air conditioning" can come to a pretty penny. Why not spring for another $2,500 bucks and get the moon roof and the navigation?

01/11/08 10:22 AM My cheap car has power locks, driver and passenger airbags, and antilock brakes. Manual seats, manual windows, manual mirrors (unheated!!), plain old rear-view mirror. Of course a compass is a safety necessity. Once you pick up the carjacker, if he were to tell you to drive south (towards Mexico) how else will you be able to tell which direction is south? You do not want to anger the carjacker by driving the wrong direction...at least not until your lovely heated seats have had a chance to lull him to sleep. Better yet, GPS is probably a definite safety necessity. Especially if one plans to frequent shady places such as grocery stores and McDonalds.

On the surface of it (no pun intended...) this may seem like a very sensible plan. However you are forgetting about the very real possibility of an armed carjacker in scuba gear lurking at the bottom of the lake or pond. Without those power windows you are really just a sitting duck! (no pun intended....)

01/11/08 01:00 PM Plus, a handgun is not going to save you if you are putting groceries into the car or walking to your car at night and someone comes up from behind you, sticks a gun in your back, and demands your keys and wallet. The moment you turn to attack, you're dead.
The thought that you may be carrying a weapon is a criminal's greatest fear. It may seem impractical in theory that you could use it effectively, but they will not take that chance. I proudly display an NRA sticker on the back driver's side window of our cars.
I always invite people who don't like guns, don't think they work, or are in favor of "gun control" laws to proudly display a "Gun Free Zone" sticker.

01/11/08 01:41 PM MarkN, I understand that in addition to the neighborhood McDonalds being overrun with carjackers lurking in the bushes, my local Walmart has recently become similarly infested with ruthless (if better-looking) criminals, who will also attempt to rob me as I am loading my car. Since I haven't yet had a chance to run out and purchase my chrome-plated handgun, what automotive safety features do you suggest?
ReplyReport AbuseEditDeleteHide Options
momOnARollMessage #98
01/11/08 02:10 PM Probably the best critical safety feature to have in the Walmart situation, is child safety locks on the doors...the ones where once they close, you can't open them from the inside. Better put them on the front doors too, just to be safe. That way, once the good-looking criminals realize you only have monopoly money in your wallet, they won't be able to get out of the car and end the fun.
The power windows would also help on such a car, because with the child safety locks on the front doors, one would need to roll down the window to open the door from the outside. Having to crank a knob when doing this, could cause severe shoulder injuries, and should be avoided at all costs.

02/17/08 05:52 PM Remind me on something - how did these people get into this situation in the first place? If you're walking to your car with groceries and kids in an area when you can get robbed, why isn't a security guard with you?
And while this woman is walking to her car at night - if there is a parking lot that people get ambushed at night, WHY IS HER CAR THERE AT NIGHT?!?!?!?!?! And if she has to part there for some unknown reason, why isn't a cop there? Call your local PD! How stupid can someone be to say to themselves "I'll probably get attacked, but I'm not going to call the Police to escort me." Come on! This is what they are here for! Protect and Serve!
At the risk of being roasted, I have to say that there are plenty of places where you can get robbed even if you think you are safe. That is why you have to be aware of your surroundings.
My mother once was robbed while she was in a busy crowded shopping center. They had security guards on patrol too. The guard got a description of the robber, the accomplish (waiting in the getaway car), the license plate number, car description. They were never arrested. Cops paid a visit to their home and that was it. In fact, later the police asked her to sign a form saying that she wouldn't press charges.
And I've heard of robberies occurring in broad daylight, so sometimes you may think you're safe, but you never know.

Dude...I live in the snowiest city in North America (well, maybe not this year if the snow gods are in our favor) and seriously...heated mirrors are a WANT. I don't have heated mirrors...and I can't say I've ever lamented the fact that I do not. It's called a mini-ice scraper.
OK. Power locks...I kinda see your point, but you are missing the fact that the window can be broken by A. the butt of the gun and B. a bullet going through glass. So....kinda cancels your whole "get the people in the car fast" thing out. You are much better off taking the keys, throwing them across the parking lot, and booking it in the other direction of your car jacker.
How will a handgun and a concealed carry permit protect you in a situation like that,
Uh...you are being shot at, you pull your gun and shoot back, well.......might dissuade the guy a little as opposed to innocent person with no defense mechanism. Most criminals are wimps. They prey on the helpless.
I didn't know handguns came in chrome too!
Yes! And even gold plated with engraving! AND you can get pink grips...or if you prefer the Glock variety, purple polymer frames!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have the money, you would be AMAZED at the options out there. Hmm...now do you think engraving on your gun is a "need" or a "want?" I say a need because if you loose it in a gun battle there will be no question as to what is yours when you scramble to get it back...
