A perfect opportunity for me to let you trigger hap... er... "pacifism-challenged" US folks on the opportunity of a lifetime. You've been out hunting all kinds of big game: deer, elk, even a moose or two. You've brought down a mountain lion at two hundred yards with a handgun. You own one of those guns that fires tiny saw blades to decapitate wild turkeys. You think you've enjoyed the best that hunting has to offer. But you haven't. Not until you've hunted for snow leopard. Now I can hear you all groaning, "But they're way over in Afghanistan and Nepal and India." My friends, the trip may be long, but it's worth it. I guarantee you: the game you've bagged thus far will seem like road kill after your first uncia hunt. The thrill of an uncia hunt is unmistakable. The prey is psychopathic, vicious and bloodthirsty. Best of all, you'll be performing an invaluable service for Afghan and Nepalese farmers, and even saving lives in the process. So step up to the big leagues and make your next hunt an uncia hunt. There may be just a few... small... issues with legality. Don't let that stop you.Be the first person on your block... or in your state... to have a snow leopard head mounted on your wall. It's glory. It's thrill. And it's guilt-free hunting. Think about it.

If it was to bring down a snow leopard cub, then I thank you with tears of joy in my eyes. If not, you're a cruel, despicable monster and may you be trampled by wild moose.

If this snow leopard can fetch me a bottle, I'd keep it as a pet! Ya know we need a fishing thread! Nothing better than a boat in the middle of a lake, calm water & it's sooooo relaxing!

And, it cracks me up to hear hunters talk of how much "money they saved" by getting 1 deer for that year. Of course, the cost of guns, tree stand, license, pickup truck and all the pimped out hunting accesories doens't get factored in. lol, most of them would drive pick ups anyway and already had the guns. i personally hate tree stand hunting, but a lot of these things are one time costs that average out over the lifetime of hunting. now you do have to pay for the license each year, but in our case we can get 3 deer on just B's permits. we would have enough we could give a whole one to his sister and her husband to help with their red meat bill. we also process it ourselves. i know what i used to spend on beef, and never having to buy it again is great, especiallywhen i prefer the taste of venison. if we have time we will get out pheasant hunting and i can use that inplace of chicken at the moment we are just too busy so i'm wondering if we will find time for that. we also don't have to buy fish as we stock up regularly in the spring and summer catching trout. we will have the initial cost of getting me my own bow (since i can't use his old one) but that is a choice since i'd like to bow hunt rather than just go for rifle season. It will also last me a very long time as well. i hope to get a lot of deer with it.

My husband's friend posted this on facebook the other day: That said, both my husband and I hunt. It does save grocery money, though it costs hobby money. But it's his hobby and he is going to do it anyway, so at least it saves me money. We shot 3 deer last year. I couldn't begin to count the pounds of hamburger and number of steaks and roasts we did not have to buy because of it. My husband's truck would be his vehicle whether he hunted or not, so that isn't a hunting expense. We used the compound bows we have had for several years, so if they total cost $1000 and are three years old, it was $333 for the use of them. Then the arrows, which we already had. New broadheads, maybe $100. Treestands we had already, many years old. Probably $25/year. Licenses are about $100/year for the two of us. Add in $40 for the foodsaver bags because we process our own, and say $10 for the pork to mix in with the venison burger. So we probably spent $608 last year to hunt, though that number keeps going down the older our equipment gets. I use my bow or a gun that DH already has, so I am not planning on upgrading. He gets a new bow every few years, but he sells the old one and only spends about $100 for a new bow. Equipment cost after the initial set-up (which for us, well DH, was really 15 years ago) is fairly low. If you assume $3/pound for ground beef; we probably got 25 pounds per deer, so 75 pounds total. $225 saved. Steaks, oh I don't know. Probably at least 10 packages per deer (anywhere from 2 steaks - 4 tenderloins/backstraps). 30 packages of steak for dinner for two plus leftovers. So an average of $10/package? I don't know because I never buy steak and don't know the price. $300. Probably closer to $400 because I don't count how many steaks we actually get out of the deer. We get 2-3 roasts per deer. 9 roasts total - $8/roast at the store - $72. So there we have $597 in meat already. That doesn't count the meat that we make into deer sticks or jerky, which sells for more per pound at the store, etc. $11-total cost of hunting if steak/hamburger count is right. So we pretty much break even. But we are going to spend the money on hunting anyway, so saving grocery money is a bonus. We can shoot up to 6 deer (buck/doe for me in PA, buck/doe for him in PA, buck/doe for him in OH) so if we shoot more deer, we will actually make money on the deal. This year I might actually count how many pounds we get. We are still in archery. I think muzzle loader is in for a little bit too. Rifle isn't until after Thanksgiving (local schools give the day off). But, I digress. Go back to hunting snow leopards.

We are in bow season right now. Firearms season starts the 1st weekend in November, Muzzle loading goes through December.
Our shop is crazy busy right now, people buyin guns, scopes, having them mounted, bore sighted, as well as having their guns fixed and cleaned, etc.
Needless to say since we opened our shop we haven't had time to hunt for our own.

By your analysis, you'd be looking at 150 pounds of ground beef, 60 steaks, 120 tenderloins/backstraps, and 18 roasts. How on Earth do you keep all of that refrigerated?

A friend just bought a .45 called the Governor (a mountain lion "visited" his deck over the weekend with paws 4+ inches across). Have you heard about this hand gun? Yep, it is Smith and Wesson's answer to the Taurus Judge

Iggy, the judge isn't too bad for recoil. But they are loud, especially if you shoot a .410 slug through it.

Yes I have. I am used to shotguns, but DH works swing shifts so he insists that I shoot EVERYTHING every so often to stay in the groove.
The recoil is not bad, but it was a big jump for me from the 9MM that I am used to. But I do notice a change with different types of ammo. DH says I am crazy, which I may be, because he does not agree. I like it with buckshot the best.

I said we "can" shoot up to that money, not that we do or would! We have a chest freezer downstairs that can hold everything from about 2 deer. After that, we head over to my parents who have a big upright freezer that holds the rest! I would bring it to my house, but it wouldn't fit into our basement. We usually make jerky or deer sticks and give them to friends/family in order to get it out of the house. DH just informed me that you can't have venison left over from the previous season once the new hunting season starts. Something about how people could say you were poaching, etc. I don't know if that is true though. haha

I have an awesome back strap recipe if anyone is interested. I get a lot of the meat that isn't prime cuts made into ground meat (mixed with a bit of pork fat). My kids have never had beef, we make moose burgers, moose meatoaf, moose chili, moose taco's and moose meatballs...the kids call them moose balls. I'd LOVE your backstrap recipe!
