I have been doing cardio everyday but I wanted to start doing some light weights. I don't feel comfortable lifting weights at the fitness club so I got a kettlebell with a dvd. I tried it tonight and man it wore me out. My stomach muscles are already feeling it.
Any tips that I need to know? How long of a workout would you recommend?

I really like Kettlebells I went to a class at a gym while out of town about 6 months ago, and was introduced to them there. I got 3 kettlebell workouts (each to be done once a week) of about 20 minutes duration drawn up by a Fitness Advisor at my gym. She also checked my technique. We get a free appointment every 6 weeks, but I would recommend paying for at least one session with a PT if you don't have that option, because you can do yourself serious injury with poor technique. I'd recommend focusing on just 2 or 3 basic moves using your Kettlebell, and concentrate on the compound moves like the swing that will use multiple muscle groups and also raise your heart rate and get you a cardio workout too. There are lots of kettlebell moves, but the only ones I do every workout are the swing and the clean and press. Concentrate on getting a few moves right rather than trying to learn a dozen or more exercises. My main complaint is that there is only one set of kettlebells at my gym and they are really popular so I often can't get them when I need them

I like kettlebells and use them for variety. I found a new quick workout with them.
Quick warm up.
Halo - put the k.b. over your head and circle it around one way then the next.
Waist - same thing.
Legs - do a wide squat and thread the kb in a figure eight between your legs in each direction. There will be a little bit of movement side to side.
Repeat. Do as many reps as you are comfortable with.
Stretch and done. ----------- Quick warm up.
Two exercise count down. Kettle bell swing and squat thrusts.
Do 15 reps kb. then 15 reps s.thrusts (burpees) Do 14 reps kb then 15 reps s.t. Do 13 Continue the count down to one.
Stretch and done.

my mom tore her rotator cuff while using them. FWIW she's almost 60 and doesn't exercise regularly. Remember, burn is good - pain is bad!

As people age, it's extremely important to continue an exercise program and not over do. I'm over 60 and keep on a program because I play tennis and golf. The exercise base nearly eliminates sports induced injuries. And can rehabilitate little dings.
