Quoting from my local paper this morning, from an AP article:
President Barack Obama said Friday he has dispatched 100 U.S. troops to central Africa to support a years-long fight against the guerrilla group accused of horrific atrocities. "They were sent to advise, not engage in combat, unless forced to defend themselves." In a letter to Congress Obama said the troops will act as advisors in a long running battle against the Lord's Resistance Army, considered one of Africa's most ruthless rebel groups, and help hunt down it's notorious leader, Joseph Kony. The first of the troops arrived on Wednesday, the White House said, and others will be sent to South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The article continues onward......hopefully someone here will find it and quote the source for me.
My opinion? The President is out of control. One hundred troops for three nations and a fight to squelch rebellion. The number is not even a scratch on the cheek, on what would be needed. I do not want one American to die fighting something in Central Africa where we will not be able to win the war. He should worry about things here at home right now.
I think the protestors on Wall Street can find their "anchor argument" at 1600 Pennsylvania and not on Wall Street.

Announced on a Friday, buried on page 19 of my local paper, on a Saturday. The announcement was once again made on a day where it gets little attention and ignored by major media for the week. Monday morning will still be about Wall Street protestors tilting at windmills, when we should be focused on the President and his adventures with troops around the world. And everyone here (on the liberal side) claimed Bush was out of control.

Can you say "quagmire" Mr. President?
Time to focus on the home front. Keep the troops home, and focus on the economy.
This President is grasping at straws, ignoring the homefront. He is not going to be re-elected.

we have used our military in over 150 conflicts since WW2. that is an average of over two per year. and yet you take Obama to task for combatting the LRA, a terrorist organization?
amazing.
note to the board: i am not defending this or any of the other 150+ actions. i just don't see it as "out of control", at all. it is, in fact "the norm".

dj, even you have to admit, we are no longer the military super power we were thirty years ago, fighting Communism. Let's fix our problems at home.

I don't think we should get involved at this time, but I sure would hate to see defending the LRA become a political rallying cry.

Let's fix our problems at home. i already explicitly stated that i oppose us being "global cop". Obama does NOT have my support for this, or any other military enterprise in which we are currently engaged. i just find it amazing that THIS ONE would break the camel's back.

I am really getting worried that the President realizes he has lost control at home, and has decided to wage conflicts overseas, trying to regain the vote from Middle America. Hopefully he is going to lose all his far left backing from this fiasco.

I worked days yesterday, and unlike most here, we do not play on the internet while at work, other than e-mails, etc.... I believe it was announced in the early afternoon, avoiding evening news casts, as their nightly agenda had already been set. Please note, the troops started going on Wednesday, but not announced until Friday. Small detail, but still a detail, and very telling. The President was supposed to be all about open and honesty, but seems to have a little problem announcing details when they actually happen.

Now, answer my proposition. Could this grow into another Vietnam? Remember, Vietnam started out with a few "advisors".

... Please note, the troops started going on Wednesday, but not announced until Friday. ... You mean they didn't announce weeks ahead of time flight information, details about each individual and their families who was going to fly in, details about the equipment they were taking with them, etc, etc, etc?

Bills, please........... We know military flights are not publicly disclosed, so that is not an issue. We do fly commercial flights with our military troops, into countries all over the world into hell holes we have troops stationed at right now, so this is not the issue, and you know it. This is a case of the President announced something he wanted to make sure was not the Sunday topic of discussion, and it will not be. It will all be about OWS. IT ALL STARTS WITH ONE HUNDRED ADVISORS, AND GROW FROM THERE. WE ALL KNOW IT. Let's try to stop this now, before we regret it.

Can we impeach Obama yet? He is as dumb as Bush. AH in Chief if you haven't noticed, we are in the midst of a recession, and cannot afford another war. Don't you worry about the Occupy Wall Street crowd. Worry about the Gray Army - we will be marching on Washington, with wheel chairs and walkers, demand peace and real change.

... My opinion? The President is out of control. ... My opinion is that the presidency is out of control. "The founding fathers expected an executive who tried to overreach and expected the executive would be hampered and curtailed by the legislative branch... They [Congress] have basically renounced — walked away from their responsibility to oversee and check." — Bruce Fein www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/07132007/profile.html

I am astounded at this anti war sentiment coming out of the right. Where the heck was it when Bush was war mongering on a giant scale? It is so profoundly obvious that this is simply an anti Obama reaction.
By the way, I was against the war in Iraq, I am against our involvement in Libya and I am against any involvement in Africa as long as we have so many troops currently deployed in other wars and have so many people unemployed.

Comparing Bush to Obama, I think at least Bush had Congressional approval for all of his war mongering.

Obama is sending 100 troops, there is a bit of a difference there wouldn't you agree? For the record, I do not support even one single troop being sent anywhere, for any foreign conflict.

I'm torn. I don't like us getting involved in more slippery slope conflicts but at the same time there is a lot of suffering in the world. These are people who are being murdered, raped and harmed. I believe the world has a moral obligation to stop it.

Some of us on the right have had the anti war sentiment all along. Many on the right were not thrilled with many of the actions taken by the Bush administration. Others on the right think that if there is indeed a time to get involved with wars in other countries this is certainly not that time. We have no money. Many have no jobs. America first.

Personally, I think that we should invade Tahiti. Those people have got it coming. They have a near monopoly on fruit flavored drinks with tiny umbrellas, and they refuse to engage in fair trade. Have you ever seen a Tahitian wearing a suit tailored in New York City? They kidnapped Marlon Brando decades ago, and force fed him until he was 400 pounds, before he died. Enough of this tropical terrorism!
