I am seriously considering taking up guitar. Any good suggestions for a beginner. I wanted to take up drums and replace Lars of Metallica but he wouldn't give up the job. So now it is guitar here I come.

I would start off with an acoustic. The strings are heavier than an electric, but it is a good way to build strength in your fingers. A Takamine is a good brand for a beginner, in my opinion. Ovation also makes some fairly inexpensive models, as well. But if you do want an electric, I would recommend a Squier. They are owned by Fender and make very nice guitars for the price.

Thanks. Haven't decided on acoustic or electric so that gives me a starting place. Any suggestions on where to purchase. We have a couple of guitar stores and music stores that sell stuff. Guess I could start there.
One of the colleges here offers guitar lessons as well as a community activities at the high schools. Would lessons be a good start of just jump off and try to teach myself?

Defiantly go to a guitar store. Even if you don't know how to play, you can at least get a feel for the neck and the balance. After that, you can go price shopping. I buy a lot of things online from Musician's Friend. They have very good prices. Lessons can't hurt. When I got my first guitar, I didn't take lessons. I bought a book showing me where all the notes are and how to make different chords. I learned to play songs by ear. After a few years, I did take some music theory classes at the community college. No matter what you do, remember this: have fun playing. if you don't have fun with it, why bother.

Jebus! Do you own a studio or something? I know some people like to have lots of guitars, but that many amps? Most I've ever had was five guitars and two amps. Now I'm down to two guitars and one amp. Well, two amps, but one's an old POS that I never use since I got the new one. I buy a lot of things online from Musician's Friend. They have very good prices. Meh. Even though one can't really go wrong with Musician's Friend, you can usually find the same gear for a lower price elsewhere. Plus I just happen to live in one of three (I think) states where MF has a warehouse, so I end up having to pay sales tax if I order from them.

I've been playing for 20 years or so. Many of those years were with a band so I've collected a few guitars and amps for different sounds. The band I played with has since dismantled but I still do guitar work for various local bands/concerts. For me, MF usually has the best prices when I factor in free shipping and no sales tax. Although I have found one store that sometimes has better prices.
