i dont goto santa maria to shop cuz its too far...although i am tempted to get a costco membership but i just dont like driving 20miles to get stuff. i shop in lompoc...the other thing is, and this is probably a terrible excuse lol but i work 9 hrs a day, 5 days a week, sometimes on call (especially during exercises), DH works a lot too and we have 3 year old twins. i am just flat out tired at the end of the day and weekend to research and i guess if i dont change that, im gonna be stuck with my high grocery budget. my personal goal would be to keep everything at $325/month because that is what my BAS (basic allowance for substance, im military) is. then i wouldnt be using ANY extra cash from my pay check twinmama: Whatever time you invest in making a price book, WILL pay off. And it is not an ongoing exercise. Once you know the rock bottom prices for the majority of items you purchase, you'll have them in your head - you won't need to continue tracking them. Then you can simply scan the Foods Co. and Albertsons ads every week (can be done while you're watching TV) and look for anything that you use regularly that is a killer deal. Also find something on-line for Safeway (they might even post their ad on line) that you can check out quickly cuz if you're going to Albertsons, Vons is right across the street - not like you have to go out of your way to get there. And CVS is right next to Safeway, right? You can see what is going to be on sale at CVS by going to iheartcvs. You could keep it really simple at first and just do Albertsons and Food Co. like you are now and gradually add Vons and maybe CVS to the ads to check out each week. About Costco: Do you know anyone who is already a member who you could tag along with and do some price comparisons? With the cost of the membership and the cost in gas (there and back), I don't think that you're going to find it THAT beneficial especially if time is a constraint for you. Chances are even if you found a few items that you'd save money on, you wouldn't get over there often enough to make it all pay off; but I could be wrong. I'd shoot for getting your groceries down to what the military gives you in allowance. Once you've done that, maybe you will have honed your skills such that you can do even better. I used to be able to get great deals on things at both Foods Co. and Albertsons, but I also shopped at Vons and what was Longs. Also don't forget to check out Ross for clothes for the kids. What did they put into the space that Mervyns used to occupy?

we dont have safeway, just vons, albertsons, and foods co in lompoc
as far as kids clothes go, i dont get their stuff retail, i actually get them in lots off ebay. i got a 40 piece clothing lot for $60 off ebay and everything was in great condition. shoes i buy at ross since id prefer new.
i was thinking the same thing about costco, i hate going to santa maria and so i dont think i will get a membership but have been tempted.
i kinda do that already with the pricebook. like i wont buy chicken unless its under $2/lb. im not sure how you guys get stuff for free at walgreens or cvs and i cant print coupons bcuz i dont have a printer and military computers you cant install programs on them if they arent govt approved so no printing.

This has been the biggest money-saver for me, by far. A year ago, DH and I were both working full-time and were saving a fair amount, so I didn't really pay attention to what we were spending. I started using Mint in September 2010 and was SHOCKED to see that our monthly food spending was in the $700-$900 range for just 2 people and a cat I was spending $125/week at the grocery and then another $50+ on eating out. DH started back to school in January and we bought a house (and doubled our housing payment) in February, so I've really been trying to get my bill down since then. This is what I've done, and the results: 1) Took advantage of my store's loyalty program - I do most of my shopping at Kroger, their online site has a ton of digital coupons you can load onto your Kroger card. They also send personalized coupons on a quarterly basis. By using the Kroger coupons, I went from spending $125/week to around $100/week. 2) Started menu planning around sales - at this point, I don't buy something if I can't get it on sale or use a coupon (preferably both). This took me from $100/week to $75/week (and I'm getting more groceries for the $75 - not really a stockpiler, but now have a 6 month supply of TP, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, canned beans, deodorant, body wash, etc. When I was spending $125/week, it was almost all on food that was consumed within the week! ) 3) Clipped paper coupons - I've just started doing this within the last month or two. It has knocked my bill down to $60/week, which - unless we start cooking entirely from scratch or stop drinking beer - may be about as low as we go for a while. But it's a heck of a lot better than what we were spending! Anyway, that's the path I've taken... I think combining a few different approaches might help you figure out what works with your schedule, available stores, and grocery needs. Like Dancin says, there is somewhat of a learning curve and it's taken me a good 6-8 months to reduce our bill consistently, but the results are worth it.

Just as an example, I was able to get whole chickens at Safeway (Vons) recently for $.50/lb. on clearance. They have them regularly for $.79 or $.89 per pound. I rarely buy boneless, skinless chicken breast because it is usually more expensive; maybe that's what you're getting for $2/lb. Switching to whole chickens may or may not be an option for you. You could have price points on other items that are higher than they should be if you're not following prices very closely. At Walgreens and CVS, we use sales, coupons (a lot of them from the Sunday paper) and in-store promotions (Register Rewards at Walgreens and Extra Bucks at CVS) to get items for free. CVS would be the best bet for you because their Extra Bucks (EBs) don't expire for 30 days. They used to have several freebies every week, but they have been pulling way back lately and even though we thought it might pick up again by now, it really hasn't. If you check in with our own frugalsuz at frugalsuz.blogspot.com every Wednesday afternoon, she lists all the upcoming deals that will start the following Sunday at all three of the major drug chains. Hey, do you go to the big church on base? DH was the high school youth minister for three years out there on base for the military kids even though we weren't military ourselves. We sure do miss having regular contact with the military community.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret: If you have a six month supply of a few items............you're a stockpiler. ;D Some stockpiles are larger than others, but any time you are buying in advance of need, you're stockpiling. That's what it's all about!! Now we know that you've REALLY gone to the dark side. The next thing ya know, you'll be singing the praises of couponing on those "other" threads.

LOL! I guess when I hear "stockpiler" i think of those people on Extreme Couponing whose basements look like Wal-Mart exploded It was a little frustrating at first... when I started meal planning around sales, I felt as though I was being more mindful of my spending, but the actual $ amount didn't decrease by much. It wasn't until fairly recently that I realized how much I'd been able to stockpile while gradually spending slightly less than I was last year. Now I'm one of those people who wanders through the aisles saying "OMG, people actually pay $9 for a 12-pack of toilet paper?!? " So I guess I have gone to the dark side!

Adding coupon savings on top of that is like icing on the cake. I hope it works out for you.

All that means is that the process has made you a lot more price/cost conscience - and that's a very good thing. A lot of people will say that they know their prices or are cost conscience, but if they are not REALLY paying attention, they are probably less aware than they think they are. As many of us have said many times on many other threads, Extreme Couponing is far from a reality show. I've been doing this for over 20 years and my stockpiles look absolutely nothing like what you see on TV. Isn't it absolutely ridiculous how expensive toilet paper is?

twinmama- One thing you may find is that you can save money on your HBA items with coupons even if you can't find coupons for your food. A lot of the girls here do that.

Geez, is there some hidden gem of a coupon in the CA inserts today? I went to my first liquor store tonight (the one where I usually get the most inserts) and the owner told me that they only had one paper left because people were coming in gaga over getting the paper for the coupons. Luckily, my second liquor store, which usually sells out of the paper, had about 1/2 dozen unsold papers so I still got (7) sets. The thing that floors me is that I looked through them and I don't see anything that exciting.

we have both stores, but i dont get walgreens or CVS ads. umm, pricebook....dont know what that is. commissary does have surcharge on food but there is no tax on food outside the base however some things are still flat our cheaper at the commissary (EG, i buy Orowheat bread, $1.72/loaf at commissary, over $4 at albertsons o.O) i usually goto all 3 stores to buy stuff...i have heard that the commissary has this nasty habit of raising prices on pay days....hmm, wonder if thats true Here is a "how to" on putting together a Price Book that I wrote.

HOUND ALERT!!!LIBBY FRUIT PRODUCTS $1/2 (RP 8-28) BAR s $0.75/2 BAR S FRANKS OR BLOLGNA (RP 10-23) BIRDS EYE STEAMFRESH CHEFS FAVORITES $0.50/1 (SS 9-25) The deals are all at Shoprite. The libby sale is 0.66 cents a can on fruit. The Bar S is on sale for 0.99 cents and the Birds Eye Steamfresh is on sale for 0.99 cents. So for me that means the Birds eye would doulbe making them FREE and the others would be really CHEAP! I know I cleaned most people out with the Birds Eye already but I figured maybe someone here hadn't seen my Hound Alert the last time. Thanks all! This is a repost incase anyone missed it on the bottom of the last page. Thanks for looking Ohiosittter! Beachbum: I have three of the Steamfresh coupons and two of the Bar S. Unusual, since I usually only get one paper. I didn't get the Libby's one. I'd be happy to send them off tomorrow if you pm me your address.

Hello Ladies, Slow week which I am enjoying to be honest. I did do the Wisk deal last Sunday(10/16) to use up ~$28.78 ECBs by 10/25. I got 6 Wisks detergent(4.99 each)+ $1 candy = 30.99 gas card met 2 Revlon Eyeshadows 9.98 - 1 $5/2 Revlon Eye or Lip CVS CRT Q - 2 $1/1 Revlon MFR Q from Walmart Beauty 10/9 - 6 $2/1 Q 10/16 SS -------------- Paid 21.79 in ECBs, $3.XX in taxes and Got back $10 CVS GC, $5 ECB Revlon. Technically the Revlon was a MM.....thanks CVS I had a $3 off any Thearflu from a couple of weeks ago that was expiring on Sat, so I went to use it to get two $1 Theraflu (2@$11 - $3/2 Q - $3/1 CVS Q - $3 ECB)....but then out popped a BIGI Theraflu from CVS CRT machine, so instead I got a $3.50 MM Theraflu...CVS likes me, I think . I added the Almay icolor to absorb the overage and roll that last $5 ECBs that were expiring. quick? : How long can we eat yogurt past the date on it? Can I freeze it? Clearly stockpiled more than I could eat....but the sale was too good to pass up. Thanks.

Hmmmm....not sure exactly how long past the date you can eat it. You need to try it to see. With certain yogurts (the kinds I buy) they go bad fairly quickly. Others last quite long. Yes, you can freeze it, HOWEVER, the good bacteria (the cultures) may not survive freezing. So, if you eat yogurt to get the cultures, I would not recommend freezing it. But if it's just a protein/dairy then no problem. It will probably be similar to other liquid dairy products - may need mixing after being frozen. HTH

I make my own yogurt and had enough for a week plus but then Meijer had the Activa sale that same week where with Meijer Mealbox Qs + $1/1 Mfr Q = 38 cents...so I just had to buy them. I have 2 4-packs left. Worse case ...what would happen? I get a rumbling stomach? ;D Hmmm...I wonder if I can use them to make another patch(I normally use plain yogurt as my starter) Thanks twinmama16 .

CVS: I bought 3 Scott TP and 1 Paper towels 6 pk. for $30.00. I used 4 $1.00 Q's, $2.00 ECB and my $25.00 giftcard I won. I earned a $10.00 giftcard and I chose the CVS one to put back for Black Friday. I also got 1 candy corn, 8 Starbursts and 3 Glade Lasting Impressions. Total OOP was $1.86. I normally wouldn't pay such high prices for the TP but I don't see it going down in price in the future, so I stocked up and paid little.
Rite Aid: I got the Zicam, 1 Scott TP 12 pk, 1 Scott 8 pk. paper towels, 2 dozen eggs and a Porcelana. I used up some UPs, $2.00 Zicam IPQ, $2.00 Zicam flu Q. $.55/2 eggs and 2 $1.00 Scott Q's. I still have $33.00 in UPs. The paper towels were donated to our women's shelter.
Meijer: I got 10 packs of John Morrell bacon @ $2.00 for 12 oz. each. I paid $.49 for Cool Whip after using Meijer mealbucks Q. I picked up 2 boxes of Domino brown sugar for $.19 each after doubling $.50 MQ's and 1 5lb. sugar for $2.00 after doubling $.50 MQ. My OOP was only $.27 after using up a giftcard. This week I'm trying to keep my OOP as low as possible.

beachbum: I almost forgot; I didn't get any Bar-S at all. Sorry. Thanks for checking! I knew I had cleaned everyone out for the Birds eye but figured it can't hurt to ask and see if someone didn't see it that week. I must have missed all the good coupon too. My inserts seemed like a waste of good paper. I actually don't feel like shopping at all this week. My problem is I have $40 in kraft cats, have to be used for kraft items, and nothing is on sale I want. They have nabisco cookies on sale but since I got the cats from buying those same nabisco cookies we need more like we need a hole in our heads.

picghaw,
I have eaten the Activia a week past the expiration date, if it passes the smell test. I don't think it will get bad right away. The plain yogurts don't keep well too long, but the fruit ones can be eaten at least a week later.

picghaw: Re your yogurt question. I used to eat it no later than one week after the expiration date. Then, one day, I'm in the store looking at the yogurt and just mumbled to myself: gosh, these expiration dates aren't far enough away. A guy next to me said, "I don't pay any attention to the date. Yogurt is one of those things that you can eat way past the date. Think about it--it's got live cultures/bacteria that's good for you. I've eaten them months after the date with no problem." Now, I don't know if I would go that far from the expiration date, but I have eaten them 2-3 weeks past and have had no problem--even with the plain kind. That's my fave since I like "tart" flavors. If you have a sensitive stomach, however, you might want to stick to the date. Guess mine is cast iron!

I may try DG one more time but the other location. OOTY, if you put together a scenario for the next $5/25 please let me know. I saw what you did after the fact and it was really good.
I ventured into Walmart last night bc I needed a baby gate and they had some for $10. So I checked a few of the close to free deals. I got 8 Aquafresh trial sizes 3¢ overrage, 4 Scopes for 99¢ each, and then some groceries I needed. I always avoid that store but the coupons worked really well so maybe I'll give it a shot. May even try to price match. They were very coupon friendly.
A college kid in line in front of me had a case of ramen. I gave him a Q and he was thrilled! Then his debit card wouldn't work. He said he checked his balance online and had enough. He checked his phone again while standing there and I could see his balance was $10. Poor thing. But the debit was declined for some reason. So he apologized and started to walk off and I told the cashier just put it on my order and let him take it. The kid was soooo appreciative. poor thing.

I'd be happy to send them off tomorrow if you pm me your address. beach, I have 4 of the Bar-S Frank Qs, Let me know if you need the Bar-S smoked sausage Q also. PM me your address and I can send them out tomorrow. I will also check on the Libby tonight and send them if I have them. I have already used the Steamfresh Qs.
