Hello tax experts,
Are the returns due Oct 15 or 17?
Just did 1040 tax return; shows paid more with form 4868 than actually owed, and should get a refund. How/where to indicate on 1040 the payment made? Need to attach canceled check?
Also paid NY tax with the extension form - turns out low income not taxable at all. Again, how to get money back? Even if no taxable income, is it still ok to claim NYS household credit and EIC?
Thank you.

"Are the returns due Oct 15 or 17" this year is confusing, I see you note you are in NY. Where you in a disaster area as a result of Irene? If so, the due date may be October 31. When on file a proper extension, generally, the actual federal individual income tax filings are due October 15, unless the 15th is on a legal holiday, Saturday or Sunday, then the due date is the next business day. This year October 15 is a Saturday, so the due date is Monday, October 17. If you snail mail it, send it certified mail with a return receipt requested. "How/where to indicate on 1040 the payment made" Enter the payment made on line 68 (amount paid with request for extension to file) of form 1040 (toward the bottom of page 2) Attach a copy of the extension form, form 4868 "Need to attach canceled check" No "Again, how to get money back" Prepare and file an IT-201 (link www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/2010/fillin/inc/it201_2010_fill_in.pdf and instruction www.tax.ny.gov/pdf/2010/inc/it150_201i_2010.pdf)"is it still ok to claim NYS household credit and EIC" if you qualify, why not?

Good morning mwcpa,
Thank you so much! Very kind of you to always be there to help everyone with their queries.
Cannot find a copy of the extension form 4868 - spells trouble? You think a note with a copy of the canceled check would be ok?
No - not in a disaster area during Irene, so it is October 17.
Thanks again ... and have a good day!

"spells trouble?"
no.... just note the payment you made on the line I noted.... if IRS accepted the check they know you filed an extension....
Any and all federal and state income tax correspondence that is in writing should be sent by certified mail, requesting a return receipt..... and keep a copy of everything you send.....

mwcpa - you are the best! Copies were made, probably not filed away properly; will have to do a better job at filing. Tax return address is a PO Box - return receipt may not work? Thanks again!

"return receipt may not work?"
it should.... most mailing addresses are PO boxes for IRS.... I often get back the receipt when I file/write things to IRS and states....
