2011 has started off with a bang with lots of job opportunities coming my way which barely happened at all in 2010. The issue has been that the salaries still remained depressed, we're talking 20-25% differences between what employers want to pay and current salary. It looks like another year will need to elapse to deal with the wage gap that I'm seeing, employment increases is not enough.
What are you seeing in your area?

In Germany the average wage from 1873 to 1890 for industrial workers dropped 25% and did not recover until after the 1890 or some 23 years. But German industrial production increased 100%. The other problem with the recovery in the USA has been productivity is growing faster then GDP.. 6% vs 2.3%..But we will be completive world wide with great American Products.
If history repeats , we should see wages correction to $35,000 a year or about the same as Germany , Japan and Finland with out the huge government safety net and health care cost.
Sorry, Bi Metal Au Pt

We started seeing movement the last quarter of 2010 and it seems that the salaries are still good as people are moving on. Talking about IT here.

Why not wring the best possible salary that you can and negotiate for perks to complement it? Like working from home x days a week, more vacation/personal time, tuition reimbursement if you're inclined to go back to school for another degree, maybe a fitness club membership...

Well, it does seem job opportunities are starting to pick up, but not at a fast pace. Salaries are lower than before, that's for sure.

Our group of 20 is adding 6 more people between now and June. But this is a large corporation and while some departments are adding people, others are cutting. It's like musical chairs in the cube farm. One minute you're in and the next minute you're out.

My company (a well known insurance company) is cutting everybody in my departments salary by $10k beginning in July. There's over 300 of us in this department too.

WOW! $10k across the board - holy cow that's extreme. Is anyone quitting because of it? I'm just amazed at that.

OMG! I can only imagine the morale in that place, doing the same work, only for 10K less...

I took a $225/month paycut. It doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would, I've cut back on eating out mostly to make up for it. I am eager for the economic recovery!

Back in 2001, I took a 10% paycut at the company I was working at. I thought that was unheard of.
But yes, I've seen the same thing in new jobs (both at my current company and elsewhere). I don't blame the companies. They can bring in high quality workers for probably 20% less than they could a few years ago. Just the way it is.
