7 miles each way, it takes 40 min using public transportation and about 20 min using a car. The public trans costs about $90/month, a car would cost $250/month just for the parking place not including insurance, gas, etc.
I choose money over time, but I also have a smart phone so not all the time is wasted.

I drive 22 miles one way to work. If I took mass transit, it would be probably 2 trains, a bus, and still a good walk. There's no toll roads on my route, so that's no worry. To me, money is not the issue; it's freedom. With mass transit, you're locked in the train for the most part. Driving, I can do whatever I like after work, stopping at any places I wish along the way.

My commute is somewhat long, around 37 miles one way, but I guess I still pick time. I take the fastest route, speed a little, and know several different routes so that I can avoid the worst of the traffic, when there is any. Right now I work slightly off hours and have a reverse commute so I don't usually have to worry that much about traffic. Sunday drivers going ten under in the left lane are another story, but I figure after I pass them on the right while holding down my horn and flipping them off enough times they'll eventually learn to drive in the right lane when they're poking along.

I drive 80 miles round trip a day in all kinds of weather...snow, rain, hail, sunshine, wind. I live in a rural area, and there is no public transportation whatever. On a good weather day, my commute takes about 50 minutes from my front door to my cubicle door. On a good weather day, I don't mind the "alone" time. I have a very good job that's well worth the commute. That said, for the right job, I'd be open to taking a pay cut if I lived 5-10 minutes from work.

When I started my job I lived with my brother. 40 miles each way taking about an hour door to door. Little longer at night if traffic was bad. Moved within 10 miles of work. Beltway traffic was horrific the first couple days. I honestly think it was a freak thing and maybe me leaving too late. My boss hates the beltway with a passion and gave me directions through town. When weather got bad I started going the beltway. Its faster except for those freak times and so far it hasn't gotten me there any later than the normal city commute. I just looked up public transit options. An hour to get there and I can't even figure out all the connections. And if that one 3 minute hike is where I think it is, no thank you my life is worth more than saving a few bucks commuting. When I go down to headquarters I gladly drive to the train station but DC's train system is much more widespread than ours. I have free parking which helps. I can turn out of apt complex at 7:05 and be in the building, make oatmeal, put lunch in fridge, and be at my desk by 7:30.

Just checked the return trip. Its even worse! I get off work at 5pm. The bus that would bring me here doesn't even arrive at the stop near my work place until 5:39pm. I can drive home before then. I was already changed out of my work clothes by 5:39 today. Oh and the slightly odd thing is, there are less idiotic drivers on the beltway than in the city. No one is the 4th car running the red light, going straight from a turn only lane, completely stopping at a green light, etc.
