...which is more important to you, time or money?

I do not live in an area that has public transportation to my work which is about 25 miles from home, so I have to drive. I could take back roads to work, like DH does, but that is a 45-50 minute drive. Those routes, you have no opportunity to get past a slow driver if you are stuck behind one, because of heavy traffic from the opposite direction, and/or the road is too winding for safe passing zones. This is DH's preferred way to get to work.

My preference is to pay to use the toll road, and my trip is reduced to 35 minutes, I don't have to stress about slow traffic, and I can pass anyone moving slower than the speed limit. My toll fee is 2.00 each way. Especially right now, time is more important than 4.00 a day.

I have the option of staying on the regular road or taking the toll road also. It saves me about 7-10 minutes but it also saves my sanity. Spend the money and save the time if it makes you happy, I do.

time is more important to me...i have a 75-80 mile one way commute so i have a lot of windshield time...my commute can be a little over an hour to more than three hours depending traffic conditions...

on the up side, i don't have set work hours that i have to commute at ...and like today, i can work from home on occation...

if i had to commute 9 to 5 hours with that distance in this type of traffic, i'd have gone postal years ago...lol

Right now, I guess it's money. If I drive to work, it takes me ~45 minutes door-to-door. Commuting by train takes me ~75 minutes door-to-door. It's cheaper (probably $100+/month, not counting the wear and tear on my car) to take the train, so I sacrifice the extra hour each day. At least I get to read on the train, which makes up for it a little bit.

I live 30 miles from work, and there's no public transportation, and even though it's "State Highways" it's still winding 2 lane roads. I got stuck behind a snowplow today and had to go 10 miles at 30 mph. Grrrrr............

I guess I pick money. I live 12 miles from work. If I drove it would take me 30 minutes in the morning, but 45 minutes to an hour to get home. I switched to public transit after one month of driving to work as it was driving me insane. My work does have a private garage, so that saves on having to spend the typical $150-$200 for a spot in a garage elsewhere.
My company gives transit checks to those who take transit and it is a huge benefit! My monthly pass would cost $155, but I only pay $35 a month. I take a high speed line and then transfer to the El, then walk two blocks to the office.
I leav work at 4 and walk into my apartment at 4:55. That includes the walk to the El, the wait for arriving trains, then the six minute drive home. Sanity and car saver.

I work only about 3 miles from work. It's not so much the commute but the idea that if something goes down, I do not want to have to drive a long time to get into work at 10 pm on a Sunday night to take care of a piece of equipment that the alarm's going off on.

It actually takes me longer to find a parking space and walk in from the parking lot than it does for me to get to work!

I pay $31 for the privilege of a parking space hunting tag. The university sells about 3 tags for every parking space, so the later you get in, the less likely you are to get a parking space.

Now I've got a h/c placard and unless I'm in at work at 7 am, I can forget about getting a parking space. I had a doctor appointment at 11 and I tried to come back to work.....no parking so I went home.

I guess money must be more important to me since I drive 75 miles one way to work each day. After eight years of doing this I'm really starting to hate it. I would easily take a $15,000 pay cut if I could find work within 10 minutes of my house (I would save that in gas and lost family time). But for now, I spend several hours a week just to make a few extra bucks.

Old job for 15 years commuted 47 miles each way, had free parking at work. It took a minimum of 1 hr each way depending on traffic, weather, most weeks worked 6 days a week to get OT, was making 80k. 10 yrs ago, took a job in town, 7 mile commute each way, 40k pay cut. My sanity was more important. Was always careful w/ money(wish I found YM earlier though) so the impact was not that bad with planning

...when I once had to decide between the tollroad and the longer route, I cross-checked my MPG and idle time, and found that the toll was cheaper in the end...

DH takes public transport to work and it probably adds and hour each way, BUT his company pays for the passes and he works while he commuting on his blackberry.

Until recently, he never had to commute in his life cuz his work was 7 miles away from home with no traffic. We relocated for his work 5 years ago and since he is so close to retirement, we opted to live in a more rural town and deal with the commute for the 6 or 7 years until he retired.

I have to walk to work! There is no public transportation from the bedroom to the den, where my computer. Sometimes it is a struggle to get there by 8, when the premarket opens. I hate commuting. I need a laptop for the bedroom!

Do you realize how much you could reduce you commute time by taking the shower first, then going downstairs! Or skipping the shower and getting dressed......lol

I love my commute. 5 miles and 5 minutes. May be longer during planting/harvesting season if there is a tractor on the road, maybe 6 minutes. Time from parked car to office adds another 15 seconds.

I take public transit to work, and it saves me both time and money, and stress too. I don't have to pay for gas/wear/tear on my car (I walk to the bus even), and don't have to pay for parking downtown. The bus pass is about half the cost of a parking ramp. I don't have to fight rush hour traffic, which really stresses me out, and would ultimately take me longer too, since the bus can use the HOV lane and sometimes shoulders. ;D

I have approximately 9 miles, 6 rural and 3 through town. If I don't get behind any SMV's I can make it in about 15 minutes. But if you count the time I go out and start my truck to let it warm up, that add another 15 minutes. She just don't like to shift when it's 0 or below
